even the asian games have characters that look white...blonde hair, blue eyes etc. the same for Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia (the latest one)....their accents, their looks....nothing tribal or regional about them. They look like tourists in another land. So true. A lot of Japanese games and anime have Caucasian looking protagonists/characters. Even the prince in the latest Prince of Persia has a white male Hollywood actor (same guy who voiced Nathan Drake in Uncharted).if the devs are white then they most likely want to make there characters like them. games from japan have main characters who are Japanese however (this includes anime too) because they eyes are usually large they look like there white

People, a heads up about my article. It was for Black History Month so it is appropriate. It's NOT Black vs White thing. I acknowledge that this issue spreads out to all minorities and not just blacks.[QUOTE="TREAL_Since"]
This is a serious discussion. My brother Episode_Eve wrote and article on our blog regarding this topic.

Black Protagonists in Gaming: A Black History Month Special

It's a good read, sadly it will go unnoticed within this thread. Like it says, CJ (GTA:SA)is a good character but probably not the best first step into making diverse main characters popular.
More characters like Alyx (Half Life 2), would be needed because it doesn't really matter what her heritage is because it doesn't define her as a character like Cole Train(Gears), or Barret (ff7)
unless developers focus on making the eyes smaller (but there always large) there is now way to distinguish a Japanese from a white if both races are present in a title. Well the white guy might be blonde more square and possibly evil.
I don't think it should matter, nor do I think many people would've noticed if you had not brought it up, nor did I even take heed to the fact I played a black protagonist in GTA: SA, or Crackdown, I didn't notice Altair from Assassins Creed was Arabic, just like I didn't really take notice to the fact that Marcus Fenix in GEOW is white. It just doesn't matter really what color the skin of the main protagonist in the game is, just as long as there is no racism in my games.Im_singleI can respect that outlook. But it just doesn't simply work that way :P.

I respect yours too, and I would agree that black people in general have some nasty stereotypes and are typically pigeontoed into being 1 of 3 different personalities, not to mention rarely is there a black person as the main protagonist. All of which is not right in any manner of regard, and I would like to see this change. My view on it though is I really don't care what race my character is, nor do I really notice, that's all.
You can distinguish Asian and Caucasian characters easily. By the physical attributes to the character's known backstory/origin. It's very prevalent and interesting at the same time...I wonder why...unless developers focus on making the eyes smaller (but there always large) there is now way to distinguish a Japanese from a white if both races are present in a title. Well the white guy might be blonde more square and possibly evil.

What about GTA SA? Also, most of the people I see in the extra content DVD's that come with limited editions are white. How come nobody gets on a great artist like Spike Lee because he makes movies mostly concerning black characters? I don't see many black game creators. Maybe an industry to look into.I really don't think i've seen a non white main/playable character. Most of the main/playable characters are white people, like gears 1&2, killzone2, uncharted 1&2, dark sector, assassins creed, etc. Even with comic book super hero's they are all white too, whats the deal?

This is such a touchy issue especially for a white american, like myself. If you look at history, almost every race has been enslaved at one time or another. What's wrong with black artists making their chosen art with black people in mind? NOTHING! But if equality is what we strive for, then that has to go for all other artists and there respective races. I don't say there are no black people in game production, but I do watch the extras in the DVD's when provided, and I haven't seen many. So why if these designers are white or asian should they have to make more black protaganists? cainetao11No one should be obligated to design a certain way. Characters and narratives are primitive in games to begin with lol. I think we should expect more from characters/narrative diversity and creativity. There are numerous factors in the design process. The designers themselves (their image) and marketing being the most prevalent.
There are definitely many black developers out there, but we don't know how many exactly. In the western world of development white males run the show pretty much. In the Japanese sector designers more than not create Caucasian characters for their games. They seem very comfortable doing so. Even going as far as depicting their own race with Caucasian characteristics. That's a motive I'm eager to understand.

That's cool, hope you find the answer your looking for on that motive. It may bebecause there would becomplaints about stereotyping black people if they werethe main character inviolent video games, but I think I have to agree with the possibility that maybe more white people play video games - therefore to give immersion, you play with a character you can believe is you.
Devs should take note though and make all games with the option to choose the main characters race. Most main characters don't talk, like Gordon Freeman, so if they never depicted what he or she looks like on the cover etc, then the character could be any race and to the player, he or she would look like you.
Looking at the big picture population-wise. Power and influence are different than sheer numbers though.Whites are a minority. That's why. ....
LOXO7
Every little step counts I suppose. Sure he has a big afro but at least he's not a complete caricature like Barret. I agree with you through TC. Outside of games like Jak and Ratchet (which use cartoon/fantasy characters) all the protagonist in my games except for San Andreas are white. :P

Looking at the big picture population-wise. Power and influence are different than sheer numbers though.Totally agree with you, Episode. But like Will Smith said after Pres. Obama was elected on Oprah; there is power to succeed given to us. there are more a lot of grants and aid for further education that whites or asians can't apply for. Use them like our President did. No excuses.[QUOTE="redskins2156"]What about GTA SA? Also, most of the people I see in the extra content DVD's that come with limited editions are white. I don't see any. I was looking at IGN's top 100 game creators and it was like a straight up 55/45 Caucasion/Asian split. :P
I've made up my mind, I am going to become the Barack Obama of Video Games.
Cole train, the one dude in left 4 dead *forgot his name* and srgt johnson ring a bell all are main charecters in there respective game. though i agree with you that black charecters are few and far betweendarkspineslayer
Not just black, non-asian minorities in general.
I dont think a skin color makes someone "relatable" to me. I dont relate to Marcus Fenix more than I do Carl Johnson because he's white. I dont feel that because Nathan Hale is white that I can somehow relate to him more than I could relate to Niko Bellic. I honestly cant think of an honest answer to the TC's question. I dont think devs are maliciously racist by any means, but it is weird that there arent more games with black protagonists. I know you meant nothing by that what so ever, and this subject is so touchy it's almost as any comment can be misconstrued, so dont feel like I'm calling you out or anything. It may bebecause there would becomplaints about stereotyping black people if they werethe main character inviolent video games, but I think I have to agree with the possibility that maybe more white people play video games - therefore to give immersion, you play with a character you can believe is you.

i see. then i suppose we could add seong Mina, Ming young kim and Talim to the list, although the first two still look whiteBecause if white people make it and white people are going to be the majority of buyers than it only makes sense.Zero5000XYou'd be surprised at the gaming demographic. It's MUCH more diverse than you think. Look at me for example.
A diversely growing and maturing audience deserves mature/creative content.

I always wanted to make a game like Matt Hazard...only with actual good gameplay.

im not saying only white people buy video games. im just saying its a safe bet that white people are the majority of buyers. the two biggest regions for video games are NA and Europe. both have majorities which are white.[QUOTE="Episode_Eve"]You'd be surprised at the gaming demographic. I know. And we could fairly assume that. The first issue is addressing creative characters and narratives in general. Then expanding to exploring these aspects with diversity. As in race, ethnicity, gender, age, and orientations (sexual/beliefs). Now that's something even farther away and seemingly neglected for various reasons.Lol, I wouldn't say racism. It's really down to unfamiliarity, interest/inspiration, and marketing.Well, you know, the reason is obvious ...: RACISM.
