Anyone who answers the question with: they are lazy, they arent good enough, theyre fanboys shows themselves as either crazy or 12...Its a buisness decision. They do not need PS3 to make a large profit on their games. Also for the most part multiplatform games tend to sell better on the 360. And finally becouse PS3 development is considered alot different than on PC/360 they would need to spend more time than theyd like to port the game over. People forget that Valve is a mid size dev studio and the number of games they are working on is probobly already stretching their workforce.

rzepak

How could you know that their games won't sell well on the PS3 if they were ported over? Lots of multiplats on the PS3 have already started to catch up to or sometimes even surpass 360's sales.

How could you know that the sales would cover the porting costs? Everyone in this thread is only assuming different things, some less and some more logical.

Well if PS3 games sales don't cover porting costs then why do you think that most big devs go through the hassle of porting their games over to the PS3?

lemming or not, that Gabe Newell deserves respect.

Yeah, totally. I once saw him eat 90 cheeseburgers, all deep fried in oily grease, and he didn't so much as loosen his belt buckle. Now that's a feat worthy of my respect.... ......Oh, and he's a talented dev too I guess. :P

[QUOTE="normal_gamer"][QUOTE="93soccer"]Looky here, all the Valve hate threads started again. Seriously, do you cows have nothing better to do?

I'm not even a fanboy or favor any system over another, heck I was happy when FF XIII got ported to the Xbox 360 because more gamers get to play it,but I just don't see why Valve are still ignoring PS3 ports of their games even though they promised that "They will get better on the system".

I don't think they promised anything, more like a conditional statement, "they will get better on the system"... if they release another game. Then you got i think gabe saying the ps3 isn't worth the investment to get better, and there goes that if... But if a company is better off not bothering with the ps3, thats Sony's fault for the over ambitious hardware that isn't optimized for gaming.

Valve is either Lazy or the realistic approach would be that coding for the PS3 is harder than you think.

i have a simple Q that may be impossible to be answered

when Platinuem games made Bayonetta, they failed so hard on the PS3 that they left Sega the job of porting the game, and after that they decided to choose th PS3 as their main platform to develope their next game,Vanqish. it was as simple as that. What is Valve excuse ?????

2mrw

The excuse is that they don't need to. Platinum games is primarily a console developer, so having their game on both platforms benefits them. Valve on the other hand, probably does not see the added cost of developing a PS3 game to be worth it because the returns maybe smaller than the cost to make a game.

Their tools are centered around the PC. Tools that they work really well with. Why should they put more time and effort into tools they do not need for the job they are already doing?

Well it will eventually pay off, once you have the engines made , you just plop game assets ontop of it, so when you make your second game your not really doing a whole lot on the hardware side of things, just making sure both can handle those assets, but i think in valve's case being a smaller dev, they can just toss out ps3 development because by the time they really make a game engine on ps3, ps4 will be out and none of that will have paid off.

Lots? I'd say it is a very rare thing. We are talking single digits during the PS3's entire lifespan to date.

I'm not saying that they are "obligated" to do so,but since they said that they'll "Get better on the system",shouldn't that mean that they'll at least port their next game over to the PS3?

At this time on the console cycle they are doing the right thing, sales for the ps3 version of the game wouldn't be enough to warrant the port, hiring ps3 capable developers etc.

Most Ps3 owners would most likely just buy the game for PC either way.

The cost most likely. R&D is money spent with no return, so whatever you are researching to create should at least be a profitable venture.I have no doubt that Valve is going to start releasing games on the PS3, but they are going to do it when it suits them. They are a very shrewd business, they know where their bread and butter is.

The possibility of making money doesn't always turn out to be the reality of making money.

I agree 100 percent but people do it all the time. Even in this very thread. If Valve ONLY created Steam they'd be awesome, but their games are tight as hell on top of that. But haters will hate. Sorry for the misunderstanding, but that's exactly where I'm coming from fat slob or not the dude's company puts the hammer down when it comes to games..

I think it's because Valve games runs best on PC(Linux, Mac or Windows doesn't really matter it's just slightly better on Windows). The games aremade for amoding community but then console games are a large market. They're more used to the PC and Xbox is closer than PS3. Gabe used to work for Microsoft and Chet Faliszek is a xbox fanboy. That's the answers I can think of

Seriously, that makes zero sense to me. First they admit that they "Messed up on PS3" and then they announce that there's "No Portal 2 for PS3".

As I see it they are still treating the PS3 like trash by not porting any of their games to it and thinking of PS3 ports as an afterthought, why is that?

Thanks.

Get over it. Its a shame that GOTY 2010 wont be on PS3, but don't Cows all have MEGA GAMING PC's that they use to play Mass "we don't think its good but we've never played it" Effect 2? lol.

Going by that logic, then all devs should just focus on developing games for their primary platform instead of looking to broad their games' audience, because their games would run best on that platform. However,I think that consoles not having mods might be one of the main reasons behind their lack of enough console support.

.......................................................................... Wait so how does there not being any portal 2 for PS3 treat it like trash? Chances are they have had it in development for years now, and they do not want to open up a new project to port over from the 360/PC version.. Logic fails yet again within SW.

.. Not to mention why are these people taking it so personally .. the Playstation 3 like the 360, and every other platform.. IS A PRODUCT base.. Not some kind of people they are trying to put down.. This is a business.. They look out for their shareholders and what not, deal with it.

They are not treating the ps3 like trash. It's just Sony has a different policy than Microsoft. M$ usually pays for their exclusives, while Sony tries to 'earns' them. This is a bad move from Sony, it's so ancient. I guess they are not the best anymore.

I'm not making anything up

This is common sense and knowledge. ~_~

And let me point out that, I support Microsoft's business strategy.

Not only that, but Sony also bought most of the developers that make up their first party development collective. Hell, they just bought Media Molecule (LBP). I guess "earning" means "buy them outright". It's incredible that people believe that crap.

Heavy Rain, by the way, pretty damn good game.

That's the answers I can think of

normal_gamer

Going by that logic, then all devs should just focus on developing games for their primary platform instead of looking to broad their games' audience, because their games would run best on that platform. However,I think that consoles not having mods might be one of the main reasons behind their lack of enough console support.

That would have been correctif Valve gamesweren't like Wii exclusives. Yes Wii Sports could have been done on Xbox but it's biggest selling point is the motion controller. The same thing goes for TF2 and PC

What? Microsoft is one of the most evil companies on the planet now that IG Farben(Zyklon B)is out of buissiness but Sony is also a company. It buys it's exclusivies as well(first google result : http://www.destructoid.com/sony-buys-up-media-molecule-165576.phtml)
