[QUOTE="jun_aka_pekto"]

$700 would be the minimum for a PS4-comparable gaming PC, assuming I stick to 1080p for the next few years.

That said, I can't stick with a PS4 alone. I still need a non-gaming PC to do the additional functions a gaming PC have such as posting here at GS. None of those here at GS probably care to factor in the cost of a non-gaming PC or laptop which I bet most here in SW have. They should factor it in if they're the ones paying the bills.

jun_aka_pekto

I proved that it can be done for under $600, OS included.

Yeah. But, you bought a Diablotek PSU. I bought one too before and got laughed at in the PC hardware subforum.

I thought this was a comparison to consoles, not an attempt to build a PC with the highest-quality components.  It's a 600 watt PSU with 40 amps on the 12-volt rail.  It has a warranty.  Would I put it in my gaming PC?  Probably not.  Is it sure to die before components packed inside a console?  Hell no.

I'm disappointed in you Wasdie.  You attacked my post for no good reason.

Didn't mean to be so hostile. I didn't catch the whole thing.

I do stand by what I say though. If you're going to do a PC you should do it right. The only person who is going to miss out is yourself so you might as well invest in something nice.

[QUOTE="hartsickdiscipl"]

[QUOTE="DrTrafalgarLaw"] Build me one chump, it has to include the things I posted above, and be less than $400.

DrTrafalgarLaw

Here you go, chump-

GIGABYTE GZ-F3HEB Black SECC Steel / ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

WD WD Blue WDBAAX5000ENC-NRSN 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

BIOSTAR A55ML2 FM2 AMD Motherboard

Diablotek DA Series PSDA600 600W ATX12V v2.2 Power Supply

Team Vulcan 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

AMD Athlon X4 740 Trinity 3.2GHz Socket FM2 65W Quad-Core Desktop Processor

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

LG Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Drive Model UH12NS30

SAPPHIRE 100311-3L Radeon HD 6970 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card

$587 for that.

Don't whine about the CPU being a quad-core.  It's a 3.2ghz quad-core of similar design to the 1.6ghz 8-core in the PS4.  Don't moan about the GPU being a 6970 and not a 7000 series either.  The 6970 is a full-featured DX11 GPU and has 2.7 Tflops of compute power, which is far more than the 7000 series custom GPU in the PS4.  If we're talking performance in PC games, it's right there in between the 7850 and 7870, which is where the PS4 GPU ranks from what we can tell.  This PC also includes a 12x BD-ROM drive, versus the 6x in the PS4.

Your build does not include: -any warranty -gddr5 system memory -a mouse and keyboard -a cpu that remotely matches ps4 CPU -case fans to prevent a fire Nice try. Don't think I didn't notice how you cheaped out on the motherboard.

GDDR5 system memory... oh boy..  Yeah, let's take a 7850/7870ish AMD GPU and a severely underclocked/underpowered (sub-2ghz) 8-core mobile CPU and hook it up to 8GB of GDDR5.  The performance gains will be epic.    If you think the PS4 CPU is more powerful than the one in my build, I've got a bridge to sell you.  This just shows how little you understand what you're trying to talk about.  A Mouse and keyboard can be had for $10-15.  You don't need case fans to "prevent a fire."  What hole did you crawl out of?

BTW, all of the parts come with warranties.  I didn't find this stuff on craigslist.  You're really going to try to complain about me "cheaping out" on the motherboard, when you're planning on buying a console that sources parts from the lowest bidder?  What a joke.

Can you see my sig?  I chose to build my PC a certain way, with the parts that I wanted.  That doesn't mean that I couldn't have cheaped out on some things and still been better off than what's put into those consoles.

The initiate cost might a bit more expensive than say a console, but in the long run, they are infinately cheaper and better value.

That's why I would recommend somebody get a console over a cheap PC. If you're going to do a PC, do it right. Don't do it JUST to say you have something a bit more powerful than a console. BTW, the vast majority of gamers don't give one flying crap about how many theoretical flops a machine can do. I know I don't give a crap even with my PC.

Wasdie

What is doing it right?

You say most people don't care about the power of the machine(which is nonsense), but then go on to say "drop at least this amount" on hardware. Contradiction with layers of conjecture. How many more machines do I need to play Netflix?

I don't have much time to discuss this atm, but I guess I'll say you'll get plenty of value out of a $500-600 PC if you build it right. Was the build above done right. Not in my opinion. Is the console release window even a good time to build a rig, or splurge on a GPU. Not really.

---

Frankly, consoles are fine and offer plenty of games for the money. Let's not act like they're the superior value, though. You pay more for less on console.

PlayStation is atleast.

Sure we pay for PlayStation Plus, but it gives you loads of content. In 2012 alone we got over $1500 worth of content. And that's only one year. I don't know about 2013 but I assume it's about the same or even more. PlayStation Plus just pays for itself really.

For someone who supports developers and buys all the games they want and have no interest in the ones they don't, what does PS+ offer when compared to PC gaming?

For having such a high-tech superior gaming rig, PC gamers sure do spend a lot of time using that PC to argue with console users about how awesome PC gaming is, lol.

I reacted when I saw the Diablotek and then the video card. I suppose it'll do in a pinch. He He.

See.

PC gaming is more expensive. Period. But I'm glad it is because it offers much more value than a console and it keeps the console peasants out.anshul89
That is a bad attitude to have toward console gamers thinking about making the jump to pc gaming. I started gaming on pc around 2008 on my old laptop. Bought Spore Galactic Edition for my machine. All I could say about it is how incredible it was to have such pin point precise control over what's going on on screen vs. inacurate analog controls and the game is a total blast to play. I also bought Unreal Tournament 2004, and the mouse controls in that game blew me away because of how much more natural and accurate it felt to aim with the mouse vs. an analog stick. I gotta admit that strategy games and mmos aren't my thing, but I totally dig the precision of a mouse vs. the analog stick of a controller. I feel like it's a good time to try and draw more console gamers into pc gaming because of both companies charging for online play, and Microsoft requiring Kinect to play. I also believe Sony is trying to get gamers to go out and buy the ps4 camera because of the built in software as well as the inability to turn the controller light off. It's a great time to try and introduce gamers to Steam and how easy it is to buy and download games from the site. We shouldn't try to keep console gamers out by pointing out how great the latest turn based strategy game is as that may turn them off. They will begin to find games on their own that they enjoy playing on the pc. I should know. I'm one of those people that was converted by another pc gamer.

Hmm...for me personally, in the long run, pc might be cheaper. I just upgraded my Acer Aspire M3910 with a Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7750 card for $130 that is supposedly overclocked to 880mhz. Whatever that means lol (Not too much of a computer techy guy) My pc cost me about $500 I think when I got it a couple years ago.  I just needed a decent card to play Guild Wars 2.  I have a feeling I may need to upgrade again soon though :(
