personally, MGS has one of the best stories ever in in vidoegames, I said one of! I did not say the absulote all time best so please no trolling.

I think people hate stories is because people are just to lazy to pay any attintion to good stories anymore. Hell I have ADD and pay attintion to good stories better then 90% of gamers anymore! it seems as better stories come out, the more trolls come and say, "Storey two confuziling! horribllely storiy! TROLL TROLL, Let'z Mak it'z sem baad to Eveeryon soo Noes oone WiLl likie StoRIE's any'smore's!"

honestly, why do people hate good storylines anymore?

To me, there's a difference between a easy to understand good story and a hard to understand good story. I'm one of the people who love the MGS story, but at the same time, I remember it didn't make a lick of sense when I started. MGS is one of those games that you really need to pay attention to in order to understand it.

It's not that we hate the story, it would make a great movie, but it takes too much out of the actual game. If bad games start getting hailed because of their stories or graphics, then game quality will go down.

It makes no sense whatsoever. Like so many indie films in an attempt to look and sound deep and involving, it ends up being a frustratingly incomprehensible plot. The action, CG, and charcter developement is good, however the story just comes off as muddled. It really seems like they werent planning on a sequal after the first MGS, so thus they resulted in a horribly confusing backstory, and lame Deux Ex Machina moments. That is only if you take the MGS story as face value and only play the games for the gameplay. I'm sure there is something intelligable behind all the muddled story lines, but for me i just like the game not the story. Now for a good story how about some bishock?

Because it's patently ridiculous. MGS 1 was okay, but it's all downhill from there. MGS4 was at least internally consistent, even if it was one massive retcon job over the previous 2. However, anything resembling a love subplot should be excised. Kojima simply can't write good romantic dialogue, period. The biggest problem is that, like George Lucas, Kojima is surrounded by too many people who aren't willing to tell him when an idea sucks. An alternate personality taking someone over via a grafted arm? Fourth-wall tricks involving controller ports or fake game over screens? The man seriously needs an editor.

I just think they don't like stories. Games nowadays such as CoD have a paper thin story, and just throw explosions and guns at you to get your attention. I love Metal Gear so I can tolerate it's crazy storyline, but people also hated Bioshock's and some other games. I just hate how games are gearing towards less story and more blood and violence.

Edit: Why did that guy a few posts above me say "MGS sucks" when his name Kojima_Hideo?

Lol i must be really smart, my first game was MGS2 and by MGS3 i got pretty mutch the whole idea figured out

people just love to bash what they cant undersantd MGS is one of the best, and people get blind they let bad aspects get in the way of the game as whole, kojima's games dont excel only by story, the music is amazing really, the graphics always good, the voice acting one of the best, the originality fan service, and badass bosses, nostalgia factor, everything is in there

people hate great cinematic experiences, yet they love inconditionaly super generic shooters

depending on the game, for me, the story is even more important than the gameplay.

so, yes, there can be, imo, great games with bad gameplay but awesome history.

its deep, its long, as many things involved, its far from generic, it dares to use real time dates/events with sci-fy, it has a lot conspiracy, and its not forgettable and simploric as pretty mutch 99% of games

either way kojima has a life achivement award for it. i would love see him in a new franchise with a story as deep as this one

Metal Gear Solid's story isn't anything spectacular, rather the way it's executed is unprecedented when it comes to this medium of storytelling (video games). Story's about super soldier clones, privatized military, end of the world 'liberation' and what have you have been done countless times over, just go to your local bookstore and look under Fiction. Now, Bioshock's narrative is something that is more rare to find, and is a lot deeper in concept than MGS's. It deals with human kind's struggle with free will and the inevitable human flaw. It borrows a lot from Ayn Rand.

Deep????????

Im sorry a mess of convoluted plot lines does not equal depth of story telling. At times, its really is difficult to shake the feeling that Kojima just makes it up as he goes along, extracating himself from plot holes and contradictions by shoving more and more twists at us.

Having said that, the setting and style is certainly cool, but hardly original and I while do like Snake, its only because hes such a great rip-off of Snake Plisken.

I don't mean any offense - I was just responding to your post... I'm simply saying that the MGS games are rated 15+ (CERO) and 16+ (PEGI) and M 17+ (ESRB) for good reasons... Kojima intended the games to be enjoyed by mature audiences, so naturally if younger people play them, there is a good chance that they won't 'get' the story/imagery/plot-devices/innuendos and will dismiss it off-hand as being rubbish because they don't understand.

You dont have to be older to understand a story like MGS, it up to the storyteller to lay out the story coherently so that everyone can understand it instead of convoluting it and making it so that only "older" people and fans understand. Thats how you create a good story.

mgs 1 story was good, but not amazing. it was amazing for an action adventure game tho. mgs 2 story, they gave out too many stuff and therefore the ending was unsatisfactory mgs 3 story was amazing mgs 4 story, well, it did pretty good job of cleaning the mess mgs 2 laid out, but it was nothing more than that. however, the presentation is where it is best at.

Depends on which MGS. MGS 1 and 3 have good stories from start to finish in spite of the excessive cutscenes and bad writing. MSG 2 and 4 well one pretty much turned the franchise narrative into a train wreck(2), and the other pretty much decided to do all it could to blow up the train wreck...and it did.

The story is pure comic book espionage. I like the series though and I thought MGS4 was one of the top 3 games this gen so far, but please spare me on the quality of the story. You can tell they are making it up as they go along. This isn't a terrible thing mind you, but it's pretty obvious.

The first narrative was far more focused and focused on themes about War, Legacy, Genetics, Soldiers, etc.

The overall story if anything became a cluster fudge and starting contradicting some aspects because of becoming a 20 year long conspiracy. And blaming so much of it on Nano-Machines was so god damn unnecessary.

MGS 3 and MGS 1 worked best for the narrative because while they were heavy, they were focused. They tried to tell one specific story from start to finish, but had many other small subtle stories going on. MGS 2 and MGS 4 while great games, and definantly imaginative enough to like, just fail to deliver the same quality as the other 2 if anything.

You say that and have a Lost sig which is hilarious because they suffer from the same problems. Ultra convoluted story lines.

Listen people, convoluted stories aren't good storys, they are just stories told badly. They can still be enjoyable as Lost and the MGS series show, but in the hands of better storytellers they would be less confusing.

Actually MGS probably has the least anime/manga influence despite its made-in-Japan status.

But yeah, being a long-time MGS fan myself, I have to say that as good as it is in terms of being a game, story-wise a lot of books out there are still better.

But if one decides to stay enclosed in the video game bubble for the rest of his life, yeah MGS has one of the best stories you'll ever see. So yeah, you guys need to go to a library and read actual books, not just graphic novels, but real books.

The Japanese just cant tell a coherent story, they just dont have the talent. There is always too much back story that breaks up the narrative. They cant write a coherent story that starts from the beginning and flows to a strong ending.

yes i do know lost has a very convoluted story. its the reason i like it. and prolly a VERY GOOD reason why i think metal gear has a good story also. just b/c you dont like convoluted stories , doesnt mean its a bad story..

[QUOTE="ultraking"]

metal gear's story is great. let the haters hate

heretrix

You say that and have a Lost sig which is hilarious because they suffer from the same problems. Ultra convoluted story lines.

Listen people, convoluted stories aren't good storys, they are just stories told badly. They can still be enjoyable as Lost and the MGS series show, but in the hands of better storytellers they would be less confusing.

I just think the story was "good" , not great, not amazing, just "good".

The problem is, that most people who rave about the MGS storylines just haven't played other games with good stories to compare them to.

For example, if someone who though the MGS story was amazing played Deus Ex for the first time, at the end of the game, he/she would realize that the MGS story is not quite as amazing as he/she once thought.

But I will say that the MGS stories are some of the best found in mainstream games.
