Why do people hate good stories like Metal Gear Solid? Can someone tell me why?

yes i do know lost has a very convoluted story. its the reason i like it. and prolly a VERY GOOD reason why i think metal gear has a good story also. just b/c you dont like convoluted stories , doesnt mean its a bad story.. [QUOTE="heretrix"]

[QUOTE="ultraking"]

metal gear's story is great. let the haters hate

ultraking

You say that and have a Lost sig which is hilarious because they suffer from the same problems. Ultra convoluted story lines.

Listen people, convoluted stories aren't good storys, they are just stories told badly. They can still be enjoyable as Lost and the MGS series show, but in the hands of better storytellers they would be less confusing.

LOL. then i guess it pretty mutch resumes to people who like and dislike convulted storys.

cause if the LOST youre talking is the tv show, its my favorite one(and i see a lot of them), i dont see it as convulted(even tough its definitly confusing) i see it as very very "in-dept" it a lot of twist and twists, its a story, an invention.

the thing i dont like with the one you say its not convulted, its because writtes dont even try to dive in to it, even if they mess up, they are just blank, good but not deep, and dont last. (i like stuff that lets me think and rethink)

personally, MGS has one of the best stories ever in in vidoegames, I said one of! I did not say the absulote all time best so please no trolling.

I think people hate stories is because people are just to lazy to pay any attintion to good stories anymore. Hell I have ADD and pay attintion to good stories better then 90% of gamers anymore! it seems as better stories come out, the more trolls come and say, "Storey two confuziling! horribllely storiy! TROLL TROLL, Let'z Mak it'z sem baad to Eveeryon soo Noes oone WiLl likie StoRIE's any'smore's!"

honestly, why do people hate good storylines anymore?

Kojima_Hideo

yes yes mgs4 really brought the level of poop jokes and bald smoking monkeys into the realm of great literature.....

[QUOTE="Willy105"]It's not that we hate the story, it would make a great movie, but it takes too much out of the actual game. If bad games start getting hailed because of their stories or graphics, then game quality will go down.

Have you actually played all the way through MGS4?

Because it's not a good story. It's just not.pyromaniac223
Not that I'm particularly impressed with the writing level in most "cinematic" games ... but since when is "it's just not" acceptable justification for saying a game's story is bad? "It's just not" doesn't hold up - let's have some reasoning a little beyond unjustified mass-hate.

I don't know, but MGS sounds really good. Any game that can seamlessly blend CGI storytelling worthy of a blockbuster motion picture (not the crappy kind like Transformers, I mean stuff like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars), as well as excellent gameplay can't be bad. I certainly don't hate on it, and I look forward to playing MGS4 when I pick up a PS3.

Well,I guess its a taste thing. I'm not really going to get into an argument of the writing of a series I'm not interested in. I wonder though, why is it that MGS MUST have a good story or you have poor taste?

I never said I didn't like convoluted stories :| I said both MGS and Lost are enjoyable.

Convoluted stories are usually that way because they aren't editied all that well. That doesn't mean the content is bad, it just means there is more of it than it has to be.

Tell him to download the MGS database. I actually enjoyed reading that. It might help him understand it a little better.

[QUOTE="tagyhag"] Aw leave him alone you bully. :P Heh, but seriously, what did you think about the MGS stories?

Kojima is a man in love with his world - to the point where his stories and characters require a fanatical involvement to really completely "get around". However, people keep attacking his games essentially for not being Grand Theft Auto, which I don't understand. Metal Gear Solid is clearly a stealth / RPG game - as in, you will be watching cutscenes, playing through a story, and avoiding combat - it's not an FPS or a "free roamer" - and once you put it in the right genre, they're actually amazingly well done games. - The gaming world is filled with games with barely acceptable stories, bland characters, poorly executed cinematics - and people eat it up. They cheer for more linear gun-****s and praise downright stupid single-player experiences (here's looking at you Modern Warfare, World at War, Gears of War, etc...). So MGS? Frankly I'll take it's side - yes, it's a game that comes with its own encyclopedia (literally - on the PS3 ) - but it warrants it simply for being a different sort of game. - And as for MGS4 - I like it - I mean sure Otacon and Snake spend half the game exchanging tender glances over a robotic computer monitor - but it's touching in its own way. Maybe that's why it pissed some people off - the thought of a game requiring more thought than "Oohhg want smash with gun!" or where friendship means more than "Oohhhg not shoot you ... much" is dangerous to their world view. MGS requires too much sobriety and patience to survive in the prepubescent gaming world.

I've given plenty of hopefully justified reasons in the past that I should think would excuse one lapse. I'm tired of writing out the same reasons time and again, only to have them utterly ignored by legions of fanboys spewing forth such oratorical gems as "lol u just didnt understand it guess it was too complicatd for u", or asserting that I never finished the game, as if that last cutscene magically fixed the piss poor writing and gaping plot holes through the entire game.

Cool. :) I'll probably play MGS1, 2, and 3 first though, so I can really connect with the characters. I hear the ending for MGS4 is very emotional if you have played all the games through.

I've become pretty tired of the storyline now that I played MGS4. The huge amount of retcons and authentic "complxity-for-the-sake-of-complexity" really kept the beginning and middle parts of the story from being satisfying. I didn't imagine a year ago that I might not be excited for a canon MGS title, but here I am right now, asking myself whether or not Peace Walker's story is worth it.

Before 4 however, it was good. It did pretty well on delivering it's story with the meme-gene-scene themes and offering something different when many games just didn't care about filling in the holes of basic cause and effect.

Not having the benefit of knowing the back-story could certainly make MGS4 seem unduly perplexing... has your friend DL'd the free Metal Gear Solid Database from the Playstation Store? It has a timeline that might help, among many other things MGS-related...

MGS 1's story was fine. But after that it started to delve way too much into the weird and confusing. (I had through the first 3. Can't talk about 4)

From a MSG fan:

MGS1 story is really great, and that's not debatable, its chesse but in a good way, action hero movie very much, full of epic moments everywhere

MGS2 story is bloody awfull, its really a mess, bland characters, poor dialogue, horrible pacing; and i can go on like forever

MGS3 story is the best of the series IMO, its has all the good aspects of 1 but amplified; interesting characters, passable dialogue, good twist, EPICness, good pacing and the 007esque its really well delivered, its more cheese thought.

MGS4 story suffers from the mess that MGS2 started, and in the end its pretty average, has good moments thougt, but not that well paced, random moments that feels ankward, and i don't like the feel of the characters, they don't act like they suppose to, i don't know, feels weird overall.

Yes, this is a snippet of endless melodramic, cliche, garbage dia(mono)logues you get stuffed with. People blame Halo for having a mediocre story but atleast it makes sense. Why didn't the Master Chief suddenly start talking about this camp he had to go thro when he was young? Because it makes no sense, that's why. Why wouldhe suddenly bring that subject up in the mids of battle? Well the MGS series thinks overwise, EVERYONE tells you EVERYTHING about what happened in their live, what size their whienersnitzel is and why they can't cook an egg. Everything.

There are alot of games out there with a bad story but atleast it doesn't stand in your way. You're not CONSTANTLY interrupted by a codec call, you're not CONSTANTLY interrupted by a cutscene, you're not CONSTANTLY wondering where to go because you skipped the cutscene. What makes it all worse is how everyone seems to praise it.

Here's a message I'd like to cast to you: Even Micheal Mann can come up with a better script. Explosions > MGS.

I disagree. If you never played an MGS game before then you WILL have a VERY hard time understanding what is going on and who the characters are and what the referances mean. The game is made for fans only it has no place for newcomers for story.

If anything MGS has a really cheesy story that makes no sence but it makes it seem good because of the awesome production values in the game:).

Get off the hate bandwagon please, you're just exaggerating the melodrama that people complain about...whenever anyone sees it in any story.

And for the last sentence...I think you're talking about Michael Bay, Michael Mann is the guy that makes boring action movies(yes, action movies that are BORING) and melodramas, the stuff you were bashing in your post.

[QUOTE="dantesergei"]North americans are known for their bad taste in stories that includes the stories of some games, halo is a good example. the only place that halo sells is in USA because they are the only ones that like the game, unlike MGS that their sales are split worldwide. What im trying to say is that they are the only ones that understands themselfs.

If MGS is considered "good taste" in terms of stories, I'm fine with having bad taste.

JangoWuzHere

Basically this. From one perspective the story is complex with mature themes. From other it has some cheesy, cliche, nonsensical situations and twists here and there, make it convoluted and totally contrast with the first perspective.

But because the game isn't your typical Action Adventure (it mixes the typical elements with some stealth sub-genre segments, and is strong in storytelling as typical Adventure games), it makes an enjoyable, almost unique experience.

Anyway, i really enjoy every single story in MGS, and also the entire plot, but there are some really cheesy moments that sometimes just doesn't fit, besides some forced twist are not really good, still is a great story with some really memorable moments, to bad some people don't like it, but you can't please everyone.

If anything MGS has a really cheesy story that makes no sence but it makes it seem good because of the awesome production values in the game:).

glez13

Basically this. From one perspective the story is complex with mature themes. From other it has some cheesy, cliche, nonsensical situations and twists here and there, make it convoluted and totally contrast with the first perspective.

But because the game isn't your typical Action Adventure (it mixes the typical elements with some stealth sub-genre segments, and is strong in storytelling as typical Adventure games), it makes an enjoyable, almost unique experience.

What themes? Nukes=bad? Edgy stance there.

If MGS is considered "good taste" in terms of stories, I'm fine with having bad taste.

you simply calling garbage to what you dont like.

if only more dev tried to experiment as deep with story(without sacrificing gameplay) as kojima did im sure there would be out there a epic tale for every ear.. xD

but no.. every year just plain blind shooters, cliche rpg, and very good hits(but too short)

if we had more storys and less blind generic shooting, meybe games would raise bar in entertainment or.. art :o

sorry...i LOVE MGS games to death and the stories are so freakin amazing...but the way they are told, it's just horrible and hard to understand

a first time player is just like...WTF (at least i was) but after a few playthroughs it got through to me

people don't hate the story...it's just hard for some to understand

[QUOTE="dantesergei"]North americans are known for their bad taste in stories that includes the stories of some games, halo is a good example. the only place that halo sells is in USA because they are the only ones that like the game, unlike MGS that their sales are split worldwide. What im trying to say is that they are the only ones that understands themselfs.

Planescape:Torment has a bad story? Grim Fandango has a bad story? Kotor has a bad story? Half Life 2 had a bad story but at least it had better story telling the MGS. Honestly it makes me sick when people judge NA calling us fat and stupid.

You're mistaking depth with complexity, and quality with enjoyability. Lots of people are obsessed with those pulp fiction softcore pr0n novels that flood the bookstore shelves, but they're hardly good literature. Just enjoyable. Depth would entail a good exploration of pertinent themes with commentary and interesting insights, well-rounded characters, a consistent plot, and realistic dialogue. Kojima basically said "**** that" and created some bloated abortion of a fanfic, with horrible, unrealistic characters, crappy, pretentious and contradictory dialogue, and no relevant themes whatsoever. If that is considered art, then humanity has indeed sunk to a new low.

[QUOTE="JangoWuzHere"][QUOTE="tagyhag"][QUOTE="67gt500"] MGS4 is one certainly of the best reasons to own a PS3...

Agreed, even if you haven't played the last games.

I disagree. If you never played an MGS game before then you WILL have a VERY hard time understanding what is going on and who the characters are and what the referances mean. The game is made for fans only it has no place for newcomers for story.

I don't know, this is just personal taste, but I don't play Metal Gear games for the story.

Wow. Jesus Christ, must we even blame America for people's opinions that don't match yours? Its like "Hey, that cow over there doesn't like Halo! Goddamn you America, its all your fault!". Pisses me the hell off.

Mature, yet the only character that seems mature in MGS4 is snake coughing and the little MG robot. Remember that strange and ankward, mega forced romance between otacon and naomi?, yeah ultra mature, brrrrr kill it with fire
