Sure you gotta lay down a staple price (like 800$ but 400$ if you just build one)

AND you gotta upgrade (what 60$ every 1-2 years??)

But when it comes down to it. Games on the pc are very cheap. Pc has steam which is dead cheap.

And pc is a multi tasking system which means it does more than just play games

But most games i see on pc are a lot cheaper than a console game.

EDIT

While on a console you got your 300$ and your 50$ for accessories. And your 60$ a year (depends on console you choose but ps3 is getting premium also) for gaming online. And each new game is almost 70$ now. (Takes forever for them to drop in price you just slap those 70 big ones) Also you got your extra controllers (Extra 50$ or used which is like 20$)

Also your playing on a console thats not even graphically on par with pc.

In the long run, it's cheaper. But a lot of us prefer the fast, at the moment cheaper route.

You're presuming that these two things really bother us. They don't. If I'm sitting down to play a game, I really don't need to multitask. If I'm not gaming, I have a laptop that does "more than just play games" already. And the graphics, while not at the same resolution or level of AA/AF, aren't at all unplayable. To answer your main question though, it's because the initial outlay is higher. Even if it costs more down the road, the lower initial cost of a console makes it an instant-gratification purchase (even more so when you just walk out of the store with a console and a game, go home and plug it in, hit the power button, put in the game, and you're off and running a couple minutes later).

PC has it's advantages and disadvantages. Yes, games are cheaper on PC, but that might be coming to an end if Assassins Creed 2 is anything to go by. Also, very few games cost $70. I'm not sure how long it takes prices for console games to drop in America, but in the UK they drop quite fast.

PC also gets some new releases quite late. Publishers probably do this to try to minimise the impact PC piracy has on total sales. You can't trade in your PC games either. Once you buy it, you're stuck with it.

Also, PC doesn't play every game. You can't get God of War 3, MGS4, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, Gears of War 2, Halo 3, Motorstorm, Bayonetta, Okami, No More Heroes, Valkyria Chronicles etc etc, on your PC, no matter how powerful it might be. If any of these games interest you, you need the console they're exclusive to. That's why I bought all of them, and a gaming PC. My gaming PC cost the same as six PS3's. Id say PC gaming is expensive. Lol.

When the PS3 was $400, or even now, when it's $300, cows say it's cheaper than the $200 Xbox 360 arcade because it has so many more features. But when it's consoles VS PC, people suddenly stop giving a **** about value and look at the numbers only. I'm not accusing you, but the double standards is blatant here.

Because to get the best, you have to pay for more and better parts. But I love how I only built a PC last year for around $600 and is able to play most games on high settings at 60 fps or even higher at times.

if you know how or can be bothered to buikd your own pc then it would probably work out cheaper. but most gamers, myself included, don't know the first thing about building computers so have to rely on manufactured pcs and laptops from big electrical stores that cost a lot of money.

when people invest in a console they can be confident that any game they buy for the platform will run on their console.

of course there's the common misconception that pc's need upgrading every couple of years and i'm sure that in the long run they work out cheaper financially than consoles. but they're very much more expensive in terms of hassle and stress if you don't know how to build, work and fix them

It takes 5 minutes to learn how to build a computer... You don't need special tools (only your hands), you don't need a bachelor's degree in computer science, you don't even need to know how computers work.

For many people it is about price, and they think PC gaming is more expensive by a lot. And your reasoning that there are more good games on PC is, IMO, PC gameing has a much wider and better selection.

give me a computer and a bunch of components and tell me to build it after reading your 5 minute learning guide and i guarantee i won't be able to. example - this afternoon i tried installing a game on my new laptop. it installed correctly but when i click on the icon to play it comes up with an error message. i don't know what the contents of this message means and i don't know where to look or what to do to fix it. i'm sure it is fixable but from experience of searching the web for game error messages and solutions just brings up an even more baffling list of instructions to fix it. atleast with consoles if you get an error message switching it on and off normally sorts it out. consoles have their exceptions of course - rrod on xbox for example. but i'm still miles more comfortable gaming on a console than i am on a pc. and it's not because i see console gaming as better or cheaper but i see it as easier and more user friendly and would rather go to my local store to pick up a console that i can just plug straight in than learn how to build a computer because last time i tried to install a cd writer it made my computer smoke...

Well the PC itself is more expensive however the game are considerably cheaper.

For example Mass Effect 2 cost me $53 Canadian through steam. No taxes on digital downloads where I live. If I had bought the Xbox360 version it would of cost me ~$70 Canadian.

Why the hell is it that I've seen maybe one or two error messages in my entire PC gaming life (which I've played quite a few games) but people who like to bash the PC seem to see them a million times?

For those who think that custom built PCs are too much of a hassle to build, I got mine assembled together at the same place where I got my parts, and it only costed me 50 bucks to get it assembled together, far cheaper compared to getting it from Alienware.

1. Fixing a software error is a much tricker task than building a computer

2. I did it when I was 10, so I STRONGLY doubt you wouldn't be able to.

exactly. and error messages aren't nearly as frequent on consoles. which is why i prefer them

Why the hell is it that I've seen maybe one or two error messages in my entire PC gaming life (which I've played quite a few games) but people who like to bash the PC seem to see them a million times?

because you probably know how to fix them and how to work your computer so that you don't get them. i'll list my the errors i can remember: 1. today, installed locomotion on new laptop. when i try to play it comes up with an error message and terminates 2. installed counterstrike and half life but need to be a member of steam to play. when i enter my details i use my correct username but says my password's wrong. i then request my password to be sent to my email address. it never arrives. more a problem with stea, than my laptop but a problem with pc gaming nonetheless. 3. can't run star wars kotor as my graphics card apparently doesnt support it despite following the solutions the game offers and downloading various drivers. 4. sometimes the sound doesnt work when i play wow. this involves logging out and starting the game again. no error message appears 5. can't get transport tycoon to work on my laptop despite following to the letter the instructions on how to get it to work on vista. those are all i can think of right now

That's because it is, but not by much when you build your own. What you get out of a gaming rig is so worth the price of admission.

Proper PC gaming is more expensive, you surely aren't getting the gaming experience that PC gamers like to brag about for *chuckles* "$60 every 1-2yrs". You do get higher fidelity so as they say you get what you pay for...

pc is more expensive but it is a diffrent thing that does more. Also people say that you only need to upgrade every few years, but just go on the pc hardware forums they say completely different. People are always talking about upgrading from a card from a one they got a few months ago. Then they talk about cards only a few years old that can still play games pretty good as outdated.

I personally haven't upgraded in OVER a year (pc built in sept 2008) except for cooling, in order to overclock, and i still run everything at max (DiRT 2 goes at about 40-60 FPS maxed out @ 1680x1050 w/4XAA)

a pc gaming system is more expensive than a console. but its weird. spending $300 on a pc will get you something just slightly weaker than a console but $400 gets a you a system that kills the consoles. $450 even more. $500 destroys.

but in the end the least youll spend for a new system is around $400

however that pc will end up lasting you as long as the consoles. youll make up the extra amount in savings for the games. and the next gen when all the console gamers ae plopping down $400-500 to buy new systems you can just spend $100-200 and upgrade.

People dont understand how easy it is to upgradetheir home computer to become gaming capable. Most families spend $400-$700 on a decsent computers to begin with why not add a $60 videocard and be able to game on it. The funny thing is that those $60 video cards run circles around what the 360 or PS3 can do. If you or your family have bought a Pc in the last 4 years chances are that you only need a $60-$100 purchasethat will last as long as the current consoles stay on the market.

Console players are used to low quality multiplayer, poor resolution and it misses out on all office stuff, editing, modding, ect ect.

They get what they pay for.

You can build a pc for 300euro that will totally pown any console.

Or you can do as me and build something insane and forgot how much you spent

The single biggest reason that PC gaming is cheaper than console gaming (for the vast majority of people) is because those who buy consoles are also forced to buy a PC.

Console are so limited in what they can do that people have to go buy a PC to do what their console can't.

Anybody who takes a step back and realizes this will see that when it comes to cost, it's not even close, PC gaming is cheaper.

Now, PC gaming CAN be more expensive if you want to constantly have the best hardware available, but that is a choice and not necessary to be a PC gamer.

LOL no its not pc gaming is far more expensive for the hardware alone. PS3 was about 500$ my rig is about $1500. Most people who game hardcore on consoles dont game on pc's so they cost have nothing to do with each other .

TheSterls

and youre ignorant.

an hd4670 is priced at $60-75 depending on the memory.

yet it will out perform a console easily.
