PS3 has so many HD remakes it got its own Wikipedia article

Why don't more people despise this? I'm not just talking about Sony of course, there's plenty of companies doing it and lots of the collections are on the 360, there's plenty of suckage to go around. We were given consoles with limited to no backwards compatibility and ended up with this instead, what a shitty situation. I understand that people didn't play some of the games and it's convinient to have them all in one place but in my eyes this is definitely one pretty big drawback to a lack of backwards compatibility.

Do you hate this? If not, why not? Will this continue next gen? Thoughts...

Because this practice actually started last gen:

48194.jpgmgs_se_slipcase_fob.jpg

It's the end of the gen. Sony actually continues to market their past consoles to new buyers going into the next gen, so "compilation packs" get released to entice them. If you already own the games, no one is forcing you to go out and get them again.

And that is why Sony knows they do not need to include backwards compatibility because the diehards of the fanbase will keep buying the same game over and over again. No BC for the PS4 or PS3 ( besides the launch models) but they will resell the games digitally and all these HD collections.

Sony has so many games, the barn is bursting brah. People want to play those older, world class games. It's a nice problem to have instead of only having 2-3 games to choose from. So in conclusion we should thank Sony for the games. thank you Sony.

[QUOTE="I_can_haz"][QUOTE="charizard1605"]What can we say, Sony likes to rehash.charizard1605
Pretty ironic coming from a sheep.

Nintendo only makes new games.

And that's the reason why they put out a Star Fox 64 Remake instead of a new Star Fox?  Or are doing a Wind Waker remake instead of a new Wii U Zelda?

I understand those games have a bit more effort put into them than Sony's HD ports, but the same basic principle applies.  Nintendo is taking older games and releasing them again with a new coat of paint and some new features.

Yes, Nintendo does the same thing Sony does.  They do offer a bit more, but it's the same thing.   And that's not even counting the fact that some of their recent remakes such as Star Fox 64 have been pretty barebones in terms of offering new content.

A remake of an older game is not a new game.  It is taking an older game and updating it in some fashion.   If Nintendo only makes new games, there would have been a new Star Fox on the 3DS, and the Wii U would be getting a new Zelda this year.

Nintendo is just like Sony in one major regard.  They see money in taking their older games and redoing them on newer hardware.  There is nothing wrong with this, but its the same principle that is at work.  Nintendo may do a full-fledged remake, but its still an older game that is forming the core.   OOT 3D was a great remake, but it was still an N64 game at its core.   Was it updated and changed made?  Yes, but its hardly a "new" game.  It's an enchanced version of a game that is over 10 years old.

And one other thing I want to note, before you get on a soap box and claim that "Nintendo does only new games" I might wany to remind you that they did the Mario Advance series on the GBA which were ports of SNES games with some new features.

What's the problem?

No one forces you to buy them... but plenty of people want them, and Sony provides the option. Supply and demand...

Rocker6

You could use the no one forces you to buy it in literally ever single thread that has ever been made in system wars. There are certain things that people like or do not like and wish to discuss, it is the nature of forums.

Because it's not a terrible thing?

I would love more games to be HD remade because playing PS2/Xbox games on a HDTV is really bad. You also can get collections of games, instead of just one or two random ones and missing out on a game in the series. Try finding some of the more rare titles out there is difficult. It's best when they just get re-released.

Now I don't know why Sony hasn't let PS2 games be bought on PSN and played on the PS3 yet. There are a lot of games that won't get remade but would be nice to play again.

It's interesting though that this argument can be used to excuse Sony, but that cows will not accept it for Nintendo or Microsoft. Not calling you a cow, of course, just using your post to demonstrate a point.

I'm more for HD Collections then making crappy spin-offs or sequels. Nintendo would probably be better off doing more Zelda 3DS enhanced ports like OOT and Wind Waker HD for WiiU then crappy New Super Mario Bros. games IMO. At least you know you're getting quality games and for alot of people they'll be new.

Sony has only released 2 GOW Collections, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper & Team Ico. The other are done by 3rd Parties and most of those are on 360 as well. If people didn't play them on PS2 / Xbox and want to play them now let them.FlamesOfGrey

No they've released 3 God of War collections.

Edit: In the space of 3 years. Wonder when the next collection that includes acsension will come along LOL

No they've released 3 God of War collections.

The first two had completely different games, and no smart consumer bought the Saga if they already owned the collections. It's like saying Halo CE has been released 6 times because of Halo 1,2,3,Anniversery, PC and Reach.

Side topic, is Ascension really that bad? Assuming it sticks to the formula and then iteratively improves it, it should actually be a fairly good game, shouldn't it?charizard1605
Ascension doesn't stick to the formula however. it sticks in broken mechanics that destroy what was good about previous entries.

Well, to be fair I have seen people be serious about things like that, so I kinda fell for it.\

But yeah, I've seen some people on here make statements like that and they weren't trolling

They are 100% serious

caryslan2

I know, but a) it's me, and b) I was going out of my way to make it clear that I was trolling by ending each post with stuff like Thank You Nintendo. The fact that I ignored your long post and replied with a sentence should have been a final tip off ;)

[QUOTE="FlamesOfGrey"][QUOTE="charizard1605"] If we are using the demand and supply argument, then the continued sales of the NSMB games (including, yes, the 3DS game too) demonstrates that people do in fact want more NSMB. Of course if you don't want it, you can always ignore it. There are a lot of other games you could instead buy.charizard1605
Well of course, anyone can ignore anything they don't like. If we're talking about quality though a remake of a great game should always overtake a lazy sequel. I would recommend someone buy GOW HD over GOW Ascension for example just like NSMB2 that game shouldn't have been made.

Side topic, is Ascension really that bad? Assuming it sticks to the formula and then iteratively improves it, it should actually be a fairly good game, shouldn't it?

I think Ascension is a pretty good game.  I love the multiplayer, and the single player is pretty solid.  I loved the changes and refinements that were brought to the combat system, and I honestly think the combat engine is the best one in the series.   The story line is decent, although it lacks the epic feel that GOW III had.  Although, its pretty hard to top GOW III considering what happened in that game.   Overall, the story line is a bit closer to the ones in the PSP games.  Its a nice little story, but it feels like filler.  It's pretty much there to help explain why Kratos is busy killing everything in sight.  In general, I would say the storyline is better than Chains of Olympus and a little below Ghost of Sparta's story.

Overall, I think Ascension is worth the money.   The single player is still solid, and the multiplayer is a nifty little addition.  If you're expecting an epic storyline that beats out GOW III, than this may not be the game for you.   If you're looking for a solid single player game that has a decent story and some fun multiplayer, then I would highly recommend this game.

At the very least, I think its better than the two PSP games.   And those were great games in their own right.

I dont mind them but I do feel screwed that they took BC out so they can make these things. Also, if you are going to release a collection do it right. Dont release a collection with half of the content and then release another collection later with all of it.

It's been happening for gens though. Rereleases, ports, remasters... consoles thrived off of less than stellar arcade ports way back in the day.

It's a staple of the industry at this point.

I would want HD collections even if there was full BC. To me it's just like buying blu-ray versions of old movies I like, and in some cases, ones I haven't seen yet.

Slashkice
Pretty much this. It's a good opportunity to replay older games in a higher resolution and such...or to maybe experience a series that you didn't have time for when it first came out. The point is, HD remakes have more positives then negatives.

Whats the problem exactly?

I did'nt own a PS2 and have been able to enjoy God of War,Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank collections in HD and all were great.I will also be getting the Ico/Shadow collection.

Nobody is forced to but these, are they?

Do Sony put these collections out because they can't be bothered to make new games....no,they have the best first party in console gaming....so I'll ask again, what is the problem?

I've no problem with so long as it's for a good game (see: Shadow of the Colossus/ICO collection).  They've done it for a lot of franchises, but if they're making money off of it, good for them?  It's not as though this is heavily taking away from the primary development teams.

Link to the Past was ported to everything? It had a GBA remake. Ocarina of Time I agree with. Twilight Princess was a multiplat. Wind Waker is a remake. Now look at Sony. How many times has each God of War game been re-released? Actually, considering each God of War game is the exact same, they've not only re-released it six times as six different games, but then proceeded to re-release each re-release like a hundred times. Nintendo never does that. Nintendo gives me new games. Thank you Nintendo.

Actually, considering each God of War game is the exact same, they've not only re-released it six times as six different games, but then proceeded to re-release each re-release like a hundred times. Nintendo never does that. Nintendo gives me new games. Thank you Nintendo.

[QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="I_can_haz"]Pretty ironic coming from a sheep.caryslan2

Nintendo is taking older games and releasing them in the future with a new coat of paint and new features.

None of this changes the fact that Nintendo has, after all, been around longer than Sony; the Nintendo rehash to been around ratio is substantially lower than Sony's rehash to been around ratio. Thank you Nintendo.
