I just got one question for Game13a13y.

HOME, if it's moderately successful, is gonna cost a crap load of money to operate and maintain.

Sony's game division as of right now is losing $500 billion every quarter.

How is Sony gonna pay for all of this?

tempest91

i dunno, perhaps advertisements and endorsement deals?

Ā

Before they can get advertising, Sony will have to prove it will have a viable userbase, which they have yet to prove.

What if Sony does decide to charge for using home?Ā  What will you think then?

then i think it depends on how much and what kinds of service is being charged.

if its simply charging you to go online to play, then i'll call it a rip-off.

but if they charge you stuffs like better furniture, better clothes, or bigger apartment, then many people can live by that.

Ā

Yeah because i really want to decorate a poorly animated 3D world that has no use.

but at least PS 3 owners have a choice.

a choice of whether they want to pay forĀ blu-ray drive, or use a lame, rip-off xbox live service.

ok, let me make it clear again like in my previous post.

i don't hate Xbox 360, in fact, i do really want to play games like Lost Planet, Too Human, Mass Effect, and among several others. the only thing holding me back is the hardware problem and XBL fees.

i'll happily get one if they fix some of those problems, Wi-Fi, 65 nm chip, quieter fan and DVD drive, and make the XBL more approachable, (at least make the online match making part free).

i'm not "bashing" (as some of you thought so) just because.

Sad thing is...the TC shoots himself in the foot.

Since PC online > XBL...PC is then >>>>>>> PSN.

Ironically enough, the PC has and will always have the console fanboys topped, and that's what the TC forgets. He's got PS3 games in his sig and he's using the PC to down the 360...yet the PC destroys the PS3 even quicker at this point.

and i don't need to state the obvious reasons rite? and sooner or later, Home will come out to match with XBL.

Game13a13y

Thank you! Wow, all i got in home was a virtual instant messenger that will take me away from my games. Nah, i rather go play the sims.

And exactly how will HOME improve the online gaming experience?

for one, you can make an avatar of yourself and no, its not as cute as Mii, but it looks way cooler.

second, Home gives you a virtual apartment thingy that lets you customize your furnitures, decorations and stuffs. it also let you watch movies like you're in a real house.

last but not least, you can walk outside of your house to meet different people around the world and play games with each other, go to a movie theater to see movie previews, or watch a actual movie (but you have to pay of course), and go inside a trophy room thingy that lets you show off your achievements.

sounds quite interesting to me

Ā

just because something is in 3d does not make it a great gaming experience.... You have yet to mention ONE THING on how it will imprive online gaming? Why are devs making so many great xbox live games and there are hardly any psn games that are worth playing online?

Face it kid... without the community and games, it doesn't matter how flashy home is.
There is a worlds of difference between playing a game on the psn and playing a game on live. Playing a game on psn is a DEAD expereince. Few people use headsets... No one uses teamwork. There arnt many other users to play with....
Live is different however. Most players actually use their headsets. They actually use teamwork....

live is better because of the community, dev support and the games....thats the gist of why Live is better... Do you see now?

In that case, PSN and XBL are useless, as i've always basically stated. PC has always been the way to go IMO. More variety, better controls, more quality games...you try so hard to bash XBL though it implies a different perception of your thoughts. PCĀ  > Both, that's really all that matters.

sigh... like i said, i don't want to get it now until they fix the hardware issues. and i know, i've played 360 numerous times, and its really not the live feature that got me want to buy one. as it's $50 a year whereas its free on PC and PS 3. so as a owner of those 2 systems. the live just seems so obsolete to me. what i'm interested in are the games. but heck, the hardware problem didn't get solved with the Elite.

well, ya.. so there goes my "fanboy" point of view if you'd like to call it.

you dont understand.... How many great PSN games are there?

Now how many great live games are there? How large is the psn community? How large is the live community? To me if you can answer those questions honestly.... you will finally realize why live is worth the 50 a year

farhan007

how about you answer this?

free PC online and PS 3 online vs $50 XBL (which can be set for free too if M$ wished to do so)

ok and to directly answer you questions: Motorstorm and Resistance are some good online PS 3 games right now. PSN community is 1.5 million users now out of 3 million units sold, thats 50%. roughly the same rate as XBL adoption rate.

and XBL has been out for 4 years, its all there to it and so basically you won't see a drastic increase on XBL sooner or later. whereas Home is not even out yet and PS 3 is only on the market for half a year, there's chance we'll see increase coming this fall.

While I like what the service gives you, I feel strongly that MS will put an end to Gold Memberships, and offer it for free, only if Sony starts to get competitive that is, andĀ  if MS wants a very strong selling point, which it would be. I think MS will offer Gold in another way to current XBL subs, but with different features, while the existing Gold will become Silver. I think MS will charge for crossplatform play, if it takes off, and a few other perks I'm sure they will throw in to make it entisive. Otherwise, my only compaint is paying for P2P online play. This feature should be included in Silver. No questions asked, very similar to what MS is offering to PC Gamers for Windows Live(They have competition with Xfire/Comrade/In Game Services etc., so they have to offer that). Overall though, MS built a good system for the 360. I think it's going to evolve though over the next few years.

well, do you guys know that you can also get a laptop for $20 a month too? so lets do the math, after 4,5 years, you'll get a laptop had you paid $20 a month to a cowmputer company, while you got uh...uh... nothing from XBL except some enjoyment which is offered free elsewhere (PC, Wii, and PS3).

Ā

WHAT?

Game13a13y

ok, here's some math for you in case you failed in your highschool education.

$20 a month * 12 month a year * 5 years = $1200, there you'll get a laptop

$4.17 a moth * 12 month a year * 5 years = $250, and well, you know what you get.

Ā

I can tell you first of that Ā£50 a year is nothing to me and i bet a lot ppl will say the same

Ā XBLĀ has to beĀ the single biggest rip-off in gaming history. Gotta love how you have to pay a subscription fee to get into a world of microtransactions (horse armor anyone?) and P2P gameplay.

Ā PC gaming doesn't require fees of you,Ā there areĀ actual *dedicated servers* to play on, and having to pay for an update of any kind is almost unheard of. At least PSN tries a little to follow this example.

Paying for updates is unheard of. Since when did you have to pay for updates on Xbox live. Add-on packs are a different story but updatesĀ were still free the last time I checkedĀ and you don't need a gold acount to update your games. It would be nice if Live was free but it isn't, I quite gladly pay for it because of the enjoyment I get out of it. You get a lot of entertainment for a relatively low price.

It is absolutely pathetic to see fanboys squabble over a $4/month gaming service. ZOMG! you have to pay $4/month! ZOMG! Sirius and XM Satellite radio subscribers are getting ROBBED! AM and FM are teh FREE!

if people want to pay for a great service that continues to be a step ahead of the competition and it's costing them pocket change, why are you haters so upset? How about you worry about what PSN still has yet to get right and what Nintendo has yet to even really start trying to do in the console space? And PC, you're not exempt: PC lacks, among other things the homogeniety, uniformity and social community that Live has. All of them have pros and cons.

stop the crying.

This is the most frustrating part of System Wars.

An idiotic thread such as this one wouldn't get a SECOND LOOK on any other forum, yet is up to 14 pages here.

Ā

And no...I'm not a hypocrite for posting in the thread. It was already at 14 pages before I even looked at it.

edward2332

Agreed 100%.Ā  On a more self-respecting forum, this thread would have been locked on principle.Ā  But here, it's not...and the kid that made the thread will just bump it evey time he logs in with some ridiculous comment that fanboys just can't help but take a big bite out of.Ā  and it never ends.

the saddest part is that you see the same people making the same points in here over and over again.Ā  It's bizzare, really.Ā

Obviously live is a great service however it is not $50 better than psn and pc has the same plus more features for free in xfire. Both of these platforms also have servers while live is p2p, so it's not that live is not good it's the price that is bad imo. If silver let you game online how many people would still pay for gold ??

XBL should be free. It is no better than any other online service besides that you get trivial and frivolous "achievements". They shouldn't charge you to be able to play with your friends. Especially when they're not even giving you dedicated servers to play on in return for the money you pay. In fact if they're investing the money back into XBL at all, I'm not noticing it. I know it's a small amount of money, but even so, they're still taking advantage of the situation.

ok, back to the arguement, so why don't you face to the other people who supported my idea of XBL = rip-off and address everyone of them?

ya.. so much for your logic.

you have yet to post anything constructive in this entire thread, so you should report yourself.Ā  Your analogies are terrible, you don't know the difference between fact and evaluation, and you've neglected many, many posts that are not fanboy material, but actually are successful in refuting what you say.Ā  You just brush it off and call everyone of these posters a fanboy, and stoop to the level ofĀ a handful of people in here that have accused you of being one.Ā  This isĀ because ofĀ your crying about how 14 centsĀ  a day is too much to ask when you supposedly haveĀ 2 cars, a house, andĀ blah blah blah.Ā  We get theĀ other 3 gaming platforms are free, we get it. Live is a rip but if all you have is a 360 then you have to pay if you want to play online.

many lemmings claimed XBL is a wonderful service and it is the best online experience like there's nothing before it.

well, hello?! XBL costs you $50Ā CORRECTIONĀ ITĀ COSTSĀ 70euros/yearĀ overĀ here* a year, so itĀ SUPPOSED to be better than PC, Wii, and PS 3 online. its a automatic given. something that costs you should be better than something you got for free.

but guess what? PC online >>>>>> XBL

and i don't need to state the obvious reasons rite? and sooner or later, Home will come out to match with XBL.

this video should speak for itself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgVndZg7-aM

and if you still don't think XBL is a rip-off, i offer you another reason.

some of you lemmings claimed, "bu.. bu... $50 a year just means $4.17 a month, its cheap!!11!"

well, do you guys know that you can also get a laptop for $20 a month too? so lets do the math, after 4,5 years, you'll get a laptop had you paid $20 a month to a computer company, while you got uh...uh... nothing from XBL except some enjoyment which is offered free elsewhere (PC, Wii, and PS3).

Thompsonwhore
So tlel me, where's Sony getting the money to run, maintain, and moderate its servers? Not the gaming division, that's for sure. It's in the red. And how long do you think they'll keep running. And if they get taken down (like what happened with MGS3:S), what then? What about third parties, especially EA, who seem to have a bad rep when it comes to running their own servers? Where's a good PS3 online third-party game?

Ā XBLĀ has to beĀ the single biggest rip-off in gaming history. Gotta love how you have to pay a subscription fee to get into a world of microtransactions (horse armor anyone?) and P2P gameplay.

Ā PC gaming doesn't require fees of you,Ā there areĀ actual *dedicated servers* to play on, and having to pay for an update of any kind is almost unheard of. At least PSN tries a little to follow this example.

TNT_Slug

The PC users had to pay for Horse Armor too, and if it comes to the PS3, the PS3 users will probably have to pay too. Also with Silver you can get on the Marketplace, so you don't have to pay get the microtransactions. Don't worry Home would probably be full of them.

Also PC gaming doesn't require fees, I thoght WOW needed a monthy payment.

Did you even read my post where I bullet-point the features that PSN doesn't? I can repeat it here if you want.

Did you even read my reply which I highlighted for you above? Does PSN have any of those items?

You want to call someone a blind fanboy? Take a look in the mirror.

VoodooHak

ok.. ok.. chill, i'm not here to offset your believes or what not.

i see your points. but those features (except downloadable TV shows) are also available to PSN in something similar. i've used XBL, so you think i don't know? (with my cousin's 360)

it has friend list, voice chat, match making, achievements and such. but to say its better than Home is quite overdone. XBL charges you money! and Home is free!

and can XBL do as good job as Home is like in the video? i doubt it.

Ā

Similar? Enlighten me. Explain to me what features there are that compare to the features I listed:

  • The multi-tiered system that allows the XBL community to regulate itself
  • Account management through the web, including messaging.
  • Achievements and other game data available through the web
  • MS programs directly related to the community
  • MS staff dedicated to communicating with the XBL community

Let's start with those

You may have used your cousin's XBL, but you clearly... very obviously.... don't know what features XBL has.

obviously you are the one who has no idea what Home has to offer.

1) XBL community modding each other, then why there are still many brats on Halo 2 multiplayer? Are you new to the internet? Jerks are a reality of being online. every platform has them. But with XBL, if you set your gamerzone and set players to avoid or prefer status, you're less likely to be paired with them. Submitting feedback with help this even further. I've been doing this since day one and haven't had any problems. How is PSN Home addressing this? You said PSN had something similar. What is it?

2) IT CAN BE DONE with HOME! Nintendo can do this to. But is it? NO. Is it being done with Home? Based on the video you provided, the answer: NO

3) IT CAN BE DONE with HOME with the trophy room and such, did you even watch the video? The actual trophy room is a good 2 seconds in that video. Can the trophies be viewed outside of Home? What happens if you switch your alias or account, do they follow you?

4)This has nothing to do with your respone to item one. See my sig? That was created by a fan site. MS helped the developer do that. There are other sites being helped by MS that do other cool things with gamercard info. What's PSN Home doing that's similar?

5) are just the same thing basically as point 1. See my reply to point 1

Still waitin' on a replyĀ

Dreams-Visions

Wrong. Xfire is a great community, no need to make up garbage like that. Not to mention, Xfire is pushing over 7 million users, while XBL has 6 million, but that's counting Silver and Gold, MS refuses to release official numbers. It's a valid complaint to expect multiplayer to be free, especially P2P, which we pay for as consumers through our own Broadband connection. It's not the money, it's the principal. Satellite Radio has actual costs, like putting Sats in space. P2P mulitplayer doesn't cost MS a penny. If MS offered dedicated servers to play on, like PC online has, they would have a better excuse to charge people. Even still, people should expect a great online service to come with their $60 games and the purchase of the console and periphials alone!!

No, people made all kinds of addons that we could download for free. MMO's are a different story. P2P multiplayer should be free, no questions asked.Ā

I do not think that MS could package all the features that they do if the service was free. That is why everyone is happy to pay the fee. The only people who complain about the price of XBl are typically the ones who dont have the service.

I find it hard to call something that cost around 14cents a day a "rip-off". So far I haven't had any issues with the service for what it costs.-RPGamer-

the problem with that is you cant pay DAILY when u feel like using it...you have to buy months and years worth...not days or weeks. You're also paying for days you DONT use it....
