Retailers including EB Games Australia, Zavvi.com and, reportedly, French retailer Carrefour are pricing it at the equivalent of $600 USD.

I remember people said that the 3DS would be priced $350 based on straight conversion before it came out, but it was released cheaper than that. No console manufacturer [now] is going to release a console at that price.
At the end of the day, its all about the MONEY they make off of it. Im pretty sure Nintendo hasnt taken a loss on a console since the SNES (the 3DS being the first console since then), and the Wii U is going to be a giant Catch 22 situation for reasons I outlined in this thread: http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/28958103/the-wii-u-is-going-to-bite-nintendo-in-the-ass-very-hard-for-this-one-reason..?page=0 Iwata already said the console is going to be expensive. Either Nintendo is going to eat the cost of that console to stay competitive, (thus taking MAJOR hits financially that they cannot afford right now. They are in worse position right now than Sony was BEFORE all of the drama that was the PS3 started) or it is going to be expensive as hell, and get ran over by PS4/720. I dont particularly care, and I will still buy the console if they are still relevant, but they are STILL going to reclaim their rightful place BEHIND Sony in the console war . They also cant hide behind the Soccer moms anymore because they are all on Kinect now, and the next Xbox is supposed to increase the penetration of Kinect. Theres also rumors of MS licencing it to Sony.No1 will buy it for that price, look what happened with Ps3

Nintendo is smarter than that.bobcheeseball
But System Wars isn't. And that's why being here is so much fun!
Good. The sooner Nintendo kills itself the better.

Why would you want them to go bankrupt?
Australia... curent generation consoles are still priced at 400+Stevo_the_gamer
I am not austriallian and I can not even spell it right... But isn't Austraillian money worth more than other currencies? I never understood why the stuff is so overpriced. I hear stories about them importing consoles for cheaper prices.
So in reallity would the Wii U be about $400?
Wait for it to come out the mouth of Nintendo, I am sure it won't be $600, not even close.SaltyMeatballsyeah I agree. So they made bank by being more affordable to a new market so they could follow a failed pricing structure of a competitor? No. They won't break the $300 mark, imo.

HD Mario for 360/Ps3!
J/k it is probably because he does not like the dirrection Nintendo goes with hardware... Motion and tablet controllers. (He might fear that MS and Sony will follow).

Im pretty sure their dollar is worth the same as the US dollar, but it just costs a hellovalot to ship stuff out there. I remember the PS3 launched @ like $1000 out there, and people were on the forums arguing about how it cost as much as a car, etc...[QUOTE="WarTornRuston"]

Thats not what Abraham Lincoln once said according to the net.
Hot dang that would be a rip if true, the hardware is barely a step up from the current gen.
Beastly power confirmed. DX11 baby. Samaritian. healsealIt's not a MS system, hence no DX. If it's even going to have any kind of graphics API supplied from Nintendo, it's likely to be based in OpenGL. Given the rumors that the GPU will be based on the R700 family, that means minimal it would support OpenGL 3.3 and perhaps 4.1 if Nintendo is using Evergreen or Southern Island derived graphics tech. As for that price, that is not US, so it doesn't mean anything really in overall larger context, especially if it's not confirmed by Nintendo. And yes, Australian prices are always pretty atrocious, but hey, it costs money to import and transport stuff especially to such a larger country with such a low relative population and population density. More people live in the US state of Texas than the whole of Australia which is not that much smaller than the continental United States.

I here they have harsh censorship on the games as well.
I do doubt Nintendo would pull $600, as out of touch the 3DS's $250 price was they would not go that far. Sony was trying to replicate the success of the Ps2 imo with the Ps3 being an affordable blue ray player but Blue ray was not as in demand.
I do not see this console being bellow $300 especially because the controller.
I don't know about the other places, but Australian prices alway suck for everything. Can't say this means much to me now.
Slashkice
Australian prices in games tend to be horrendously overinflated. When I visited some cousins, I probably would have been game starved if they weren't damn rich and could afford $120 games and $600 systems that were only $300 back in the states.
So if anything I'd probably drop the price like 40% and say that's it for the US.
