If they continue to add Advertisements to their system I see no reason for me pay for it. I don't plan on getting a console next gen, a PC yes, maybe a PS4 for their exclusives.

Exactly. And i did had Halo Reach as well before i sold it to a friend, and there is nothing worst that playing alone, because that is how you feel when few people are talking you try to communicate and only 1 respond to you the rest silent.tormentosWhy are you using your isolated experience with the game (which I highly doubt you've even played) as a representation of party chat?

What's based on what? My back of the envelope Gold revenue figure is just a simple multiplication of the Gold subscribers (15 million) by the current MSRP of Gold ($60). For the basis of the 65% gross margin figure you'll need to contact Sarah Friar, former managing director and business unit leader for technology at Goldman Sachs.
For referential comparison, the total operating cost of World of Warcraft for Blizzard, staff, servers, etc. from launch until the end of 2008 was $200 million.
RR360DD
Still a dodgy figure, when you consider the amount of retailers that sell Gold for a lot less than the MSRP. Do you know if Microsoft sell Gold cards to retailers for a lower cost or not?
And that comparison isn't very good. Running and maintaining servers is only one of many factors you have to consider.
I'm aware that there are deals. The MSRP is still the figure to use, as it is the standard. Even accounting for a 33% discount on every single subscriber, that would still put revenues at $600 million.Elaborate. The figure mentioned is for total operating costs, not just server maintenance, to provide a persistent world for a growing userbase (culminating in ~10+ million users circa 2008) over the course of 4.5 years.
Are you assuming Live Gold costs considerably more to run annually than an MMO like WoW? A persistent world vs matchmaking for P2P gaming?

If you are going to disagree, at least give a reason, because this is actually a major hit to xbox live for me. Halo is still my go to game, but the lack of communication actually made me go out and buy MAG. What you are preferring is that people don't communicate in-game.
65% = 300+% profit? I'm not anti business... I just dont think companies should make too much money. That's all. They should give it back to the consumer. Do it for... AHHHHHthe motherland! :]Live Gold is, imo, essentially the gaming equivalent of bottled water..shinrabanshou
Educated speculation. Rough estimate puts Live Gold subscription revenues alone at ~$900 million per annum. One would need be rather credulous to think the service requires anywhere near that to operate. The analyst estimate sounds entirely reasonable.Speculation. Rough.Interesting. :]shinrabanshou

Maybe i know this cause all players on my friend lists (about 400) did not have any problems. Plus, i can read on the forums in my country and nobody on those had any problems either. Not only that the question he is asking is answer by it self, many 360 fans claim that party chat is the greatest thing, and many claim to use it,if so many people use it how can they be talking to people inside the game they are playing.? Im saying theres a lot more to it than that. That WoW number is for one game. Yes its huge, but there are hundreds on online games on the 360, some huge as well. Contrary to popular belief, client-hosted online multiplayer still requires servers.
And you're forgetting about everything else XBL does. Party Chat. Huge library of trailers, demos, games etc. Community videos, interviews. I bet the majority of the expenses are from promoting XBL rather than running it,in fact didn't MS drop like half a billion just to promote Kinect.? Who ever thinks that MS spend tons of cash running live,is actually ignoring that PSN also cost a ton of money to run,it probably cost more to sony to run Home than what MS actually spend to run live. More games on PSN support servers than on live and PSN also have centralize servers for friend list and many other things, sony also has those expenses and PSN is free,i don't see a reason why MS can't do it,more when they are the richest by far of the 3.I want nothing to do with what you two are doing but...[QUOTE="SecretPolice"]

I imagine the various parties, Netflix, Youtube, etc. are quite eager to get their services on multiple platforms, although exclusivity would probably require some sort of payment.
Bandwidth for games, I imagine would be factored into the price of the digital download. Demos and trailers are a grey area, I'm unaware of whether publishers are charged for those.
Even assuming licensing for those features (a lot of which are available elsewhere for free) I'd be hard pressed to believe the service costs upwards of $200 million per annum, ergo, imo, the analyst's figure still seems perfectly reasonable, even under a relatively conservative estimate of Gold revenues.
N.B. This is not meant to be an indictment of those who use the service - if you find value in it and consequently purchase it, that's your prerogative as a consumer.

My 2 cents if you don't mind....
I think this is a valid complaint. However, I don't think there's an easy solution. I like how MW2(I think) handled it where it did not allow party chat in the team based game types.
Is it a valid tick mark on the side of XBL. I think so. The feature is obviously popular and useful, but there some added social engineering that needs to be programmed into it for it to be better.
In my eyes, if I was playing with randoms, it would be an issue. But I tend to stick with people on my friends list most of the time, so it still has alot of value. Not just chat, but the whole party system which includes the invite system.
But, as we've already said, it's down to preference.
[QUOTE="garland51"][QUOTE="tormentos"]http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/31/unhappy-xbox-live-users-demand-compensation/
Live was down for 2 weeks people could basically not sign in, or were sign out rapidly after sing the network was mess, and this happen on the holiday season 2007 when Halo 3 and COD 4 MW1 were out allot of angry live users demanded compensation on the xbox forums, but mod would just close threads any thread that talked about it.
So basically not only MS also screwed up a pay service, but also silence those who complain about it. tormentos
Dude, this is just...LOL. Live was never down for two weeks. It only had minor problems that Microsoft needs fixing & it only happened during that christmas weekend.
Xbox Live wasn't down for everyone. Servers were overloaded which caused various errors for many people, but the service itself wasn't completely shut down. That's why some were affected more and even longer than others. The big difference between the two is Live needed upgraded due to increased usage while PSN allegedly has a security hole that needs fixed.
Minor what did you even read the dam link i posted here let me post it again.http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/xbox-live-outage-day-13-still-up-and-down-still-preventing-fu/
No it wasn't minor it affected millions of people and it lasted some 2 weeks were many user could not sign in period were sign out once they sign in,could not play or do anything online, now XBL is a paying service unlike PSN.
Is funny that you defend MS so fiercely this same company lie about RROD and deny high fail rates, this company is not a stranger to lies, keep drinking that cool aid live was down for 2 weeks, period in which few people unlike what you claim could play on a pay service, and every one who complained on the xbox forum was silence.
Once again, you don't know what you're talking about. Xbox Live was never down for two weeks & it never affected everyone. Plus Sony has had problems with the hardware in both PS1 & PS2 with DRE's, & overheating. Plus what about YLOD's & bricking PS3's? You want to go there?

- People think they are paying for "service." XBL is peer to peer. There is no service.
- When you pay for XBL, what you are paying for is development of the console Operating System, which on 360 is so much nicer and smoother

Dude, did you not hear me say that Live was never down for two weeks? Did I not say that it was down for a day or two during that Christmas weekend because of updates or whatever? My word.garland51It's been ten days since we started tracking The Great Xbox Live Outage of Late 2007 -- ten days that the team at Microsoft has spent working 24/7, apparently unable to quash the issues affecting untold thousands (or millions) of users. Things were supposedly looking better until earlier today when they apparently got worse again, resulting in Xbox Live's service status box making a decisive turn towards the apology side of the spectrum. Granted, the whole thing may seem a little gratuitous at this point, especially considering that the issues are still tagged as intermittent -- but at least our informal polling at Engadget HQ has improved, with some of us even able to get on and play a game (slow and sticky though it may be). http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/31/xbox-live-still-up-and-down-ten-days-later/ Major Nelson posted a little update confirming that Xbox Live has been having issues this past week, that their engineers have been working on a fix and says that "problems like this are not acceptable". We're nearly certain that an influx of new gamers going online post holiday put a lot of strain on Xbox Live, but one would think that Microsoft would have been ready. Though, it's good to hear that they're owning up to their mishap and were quick to get their tech team working on the problem. And you'll be happy to hear that, as of this posting, Xbox Live is up and running like normal. So, happy online gaming everybody. http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/30/xbox-live-has-had-a-rough-holiday/ To all those who've been tipping us like crazy about Xbox Live going back down again: yeah, we heard, and we know you're not happy. If you're having problems (or even if you're not), feel free to let us know in comments. Almost two weeks of outages, yeesh. To all those sick of hearing about Xbox Live being up and down: feel free to stop reading here, there will be another news story along in a few minutes. But do remember that Xbox Live is possibly the most widely used paid gaming service in the world, so forgive us for keeping close tabs on this story. Mwah! http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/xbox-live-outage-day-13-still-up-and-down-still-preventing-fu/ This is how you win arguments live was down end of story ping it on anything you like it was down.

Yes I will and when Sony charges for online next gen, I'm gonna laugh so friggin hard. It's be complete ownage here and its gonna be great.
Sony is losing money on PSN everyday. I can pretty much read their minds. They wanna charge for PSN so badly but they know they can't do it because they shot themselves in the foot when they said online gaming will be free for ps3. If they ever go back on their word for the PS3, they know its game over for them, but Sony is chomping at the bit next gen to charge for PSN and its gonna happen. I pretty much guarantee it.
[QUOTE="garland51"]Once again, you don't know what you're talking about. Xbox Live was never down for two weeks & it never affected everyone. Plus Sony has had problems with the hardware in both PS1 & PS2 with DRE's, & overheating. Plus what about YLOD's & bricking PS3's? You want to go there? You need to just shut up & just stop. Just...stop.Most of the time, he does. He's clearly a Sony fanboy who's never owned a 360 before & always likes to bash it every chance that he gets.tormentosWow so much denial on this post is sad. I posted several links already confirming that live was in deed down, but you refuse to admit it,even MS admitted to have problems and you will not. Also DRE happen to all consoles that have a drive, this include the original xbox which suffer from DRE and the xbox 360 which also suffer from DRE,the PS one over heating problem caused the PS to skip FMV nothing that prevent you from playing that game, and YLOD is not even close to be as wide spread as the 50% fail rate of the xbox 360. I own and xbox 360 and have been and owner since 2006,and have pass by several units by the way.
XBL was never down for 2 weeks :|
yes people had issues getting online and it was indeed slow for during that time, but microsoft never shut down the service. So far the only people that are clamining it was shut down are hardcore ps3 fanboys that are still upset over the PSN crysis
[QUOTE="garland51"]Dude, did you not hear me say that Live was never down for two weeks? Did I not say that it was down for a day or two during that Christmas weekend because of updates or whatever? My word.tormentosIt's been ten days since we started tracking The Great Xbox Live Outage of Late 2007 -- ten days that the team at Microsoft has spent working 24/7, apparently unable to quash the issues affecting untold thousands (or millions) of users.
Live was never down for 2 weeks. And didn't you believe ps2 online was superior to xbox last gen. Your credibility is shot man.
