@Sweetbackhair: I think Iorveth died during the establishment of a independent state in the North that established equal laws for all races.

Because it is in RPGs you get to really explore the setting with hours required to finish the game. You can't do that with action games or stealth games which are usually shorter than RPGs and don't emphasize storytelling. Lol codename STEAM. Just found out about it. Kinda funny it got a 4 from GS.

I'd say Dishonored lets you explore its setting pretty well.

Would Bioshock Infinite count as steampunk?

Haven't played Dishonored yet (I want to play it though to prepare myself for 2) but it's in my backlog along with Borderlands 2 and many other games. lol Just finished Doom 2016 and am too busy with Total War Warhammer. Yeah Bioshock Infinite is definitely steampunk and so is Dishonored. I would still love an RPG from a dev known for making RPGs like BioWare, CD Projekt Red, etc. Would be interesting on what their take on the setting would be. It's been either fantasy, futuristic sci-fi, or cyberpunk for RPGs lately.

I always found Dishonored disappointing. Like, something about it just doesn't click for me lol. But don't let me color your outlook on the game before you even try it.

How is DOOM? That's one game I want to try, and I really want to try Warhammer as well (although I'd say it will be beaten for strategy game of the year by Civ 6 when it launches later this year).

And I feel you- it's been a while since we've had good steampunk RPGs, so it'd be nice to see one of the developers try something with it. I guess Bloodborne (lol) is the closest we've had to a steampunk RPG in a good long while.

@FireEmblem_Man: I know this might sound so crazy in SW but just maybe people have different taste than u, there are who prefer JRPG to WRPG or vise versa. But I'm guessing your entire point u made this thread is to troll so talking to u like proper person is pointless.

Also, why did you even bother replying to me like a proper person if you think it's pointless? The jokes on you!

DOOM somehow made me feel like a kid again because I grew up with PC gaming playing old school FPS like Doom, CS 1.3, Quake 3, etc. Truly fast speed with tremendous mayhem is lacking with modern FPS games. If you want to play an old school style with a modern paint, get DOOM right now. It's nothing ground breaking but it makes you remember how fun it was to just wreak havoc without pretentious storytelling, health hand holding, and cut scenes brought about by COD. We'll see with Civ 6. Beyond Earth wasn't well received I believe.

Do you know a DS game called Nostalgia? It was back in 2009 or 2008 I think. I seriously looked forward to it because it was a steampunk RPG but it turned out to be mediocre and ended up not buying it.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to get DOOM. I used to play DOOM and Wolfenstein a whole lot when I was a kid, so I'm so happy to see that Bethesda are bringing all these franchises back.

Civ 6 will be fine, BE was made by the 'B' team so to speak (and I liked it anyway xD)

I did not know of it, no. That's a shame, though- seems like a lot of games, RPG or otherwise, can't do justice to the setting. There was Codename STEAM, which I brought up earlier, and there was also The Order last year.

Hm- no, I'd still say Persona 4 is a far better RPG than any modern WRPG. That's my take on it though.

Machinarium looked very interesting for a steampunk setting even though I haven't played it. I hope CDProjektRed will do a steampunk RPG after Cyberpunk 2077. It's truly sad this DLC will be the last for Geralt but it looks like this will be a great end.

Of course, by then it'll probably be 2050, at the rate that CDPR do things lol

I'm very curious about the Persona series. Too bad it isn't available on PC and it seems Atlus doesn't plan to release the new Persona on Steam.

I would definitely recommend Persona- it is one of the most unique and progressive series to have come from Japan in years. Yes, sadly it is not on PC- do you have no access to a PlayStation? Any PlayStation?

The way I see it, Japanese tend to focus more on the battle system and the gameplay whereas the West focuses on the graphics, atmosphere, and realism. As great as their battle systems are, their NPCs in RPGs still pale in comparison to what the West has made and their RPG game worlds don't have as much beauty and scope as the worlds of The Witcher, Mass Effect, etc.

Just bought a gaming laptop so I don't have funds at the moment. No TV either. I live here in Tokyo in a very cramped room full of books and clothes. lol But I'll definitely try Persona if I can get my hands on a TV and then a Playstation. My Japanese friends also told me how great it is. I honestly haven't touched a PS2, PS3, and a PS4. It shocked my Japanese teacher and friends. PC as a gaming platform is still incomprehensible to most Japanese. They still love their Playstation and Nintendo and the things they spout on why they prefer consoles is kind of similar to the PC vs consoles debate here at SW like plug and play and couch.

If only ATLUS releases it on Steam too. Japanese games have been sprouting up on Steam. Still can't see a reason why they would miss this chance to introduce the series to PC gamers. I wonder if Sony has something to do with it for exclusivity.

@lordlors: I personally prefer stylize artstyle over realism, not only they age much better but it also make game much exciting to play. I mean I have u seen the new Persona 5 trailer!!? That game just sooo damn stylish, makes more excited to play it.

A bout the NPC. U should definetly give Persona a try, I know some people have u believe social link is all about wifu BS but in reality it's great system not only get to know your party member but also People out side of party. Like the old couple in Persona 3 or the stepmother in Persona 4 .

@FireEmblem_Man: I meant thematically speaking. Too many middle earth type rpg's to count. But as for Persona, I can only vouche for Persona 4 Golden's awesomeness. Don't know about the others. I did play part 3 but that bored me to tears.

Middle Earth type RPG's? What planet do you live in? RPG's origins have always stemmed in Dungeons and Dragons. Also, I crave for Final Fantasy to return back to their classic settings from 1-5 and 9 TBQH.

Then again, CD Projekt RED is working on Cyber Punk 2077, and I hope it will blow away all Sci-Fi RPG's

The inspiration for D&D's setting was Middle Earth to begin with. Also, the best FF games had non-classic settings, i.e. the steampunk setting of FF6 and the cyberpunk setting of FF7.

Cyberpunk 2077 should hopefully bring back some interest to cyberpunk, which has been an almost dead setting for years now.

Cyberpunk as a setting in games is quite popular in recent years like Deus Ex: HR, Transistor, etc. Steampunk is the one that's being ignored. When was the last steampunk RPG?

Deus Ex HR came out 5 years ago. And Transistor is a niche game, like Bastion. But with the new Deus Ex, maybe that might generate more interest in cyberpunk.

Like char said, there's been a few non-RPG video games with steampunk settings lately, but I can't think of any recent RPGs with steampunk settings either.

I'll definitely give Persona a try if I could. When I said NPC, I should have been more specific. I was talking about the NPCs who really have nothing to do with your adventure/story and have no names. You know, like that farmer in TW3 just doing his thing. Same goes for the NPCs that inhabit GTA or Assassin's Creed's cities with their walking patterns and scheds. All just to make you believe you inhabit a world that is full of life. Before I played FFXIII, I played The Last Story, and its NPCs was good but not up to par with WRPGs.

Yeah, Japan is very brand loyal, that's for sure. It's very clear, although at least Japanese game makers have started to embrace Steam as a platform lately for their games.

I don't think Sony has an explicit exclusivity agreement for their games with Sony or Nintendo, I think it comes down more to Atlus designing each game they make for one specific system only (usually).

Was expecting a bit higher, but ok, this still seems like a great adventure.

I haven't played TW3 in the longest while though. I can't even remember if my character was level 35 or not xD

Gah, I still need to play Heart of Stone (which is installed and ready to go). I haven't played Witcher 3 since finishing it last year though so maybe now would be a good time to do NG+ on Death March.

My only concern is how much of a timesink it will inevitably end up being =P
