We all know that as games get more sequels, or appear on improved more powerful hardware, characters might get re-designed in order to make them more presentable. However that's not always for the best. Here are two of the worst character re-designs

to:

Poor Simon, what have they done to you!

Honestly, what the **** was IGA thinking??? he looks like a 15th century flamant transexual.

This other is just plain obvious and it's just beyond forgiveness.

Post what you think are some of the worst/best character re-designs.

/\ Snake is simply older.

Still looks badass, and bears a killer mo.

As for MC - looks o.k. but honestly pretty generic.

Ive gotta think of some bad re-designs, when devs have decided to make characters look more 'badass'.

Totally. Ralph (I go by the original Japanese names) really looked (and played) great. It was the best thing in the whole game IMHO. Kinda wished they had built the game around him, instead of Hector.

This doesn't really apply, but look at this boxart for the original megaman

wow megaman got better, although there's not much accounting for boxart in those days. So, BEST character redesign ever?

How to make a once fantastic tactical shooter generic as hell?

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00006L4I5.08.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Re-do it for consoles.

http://www.sofacinema.co.uk/guardian/images/products/0/60730-large.jpg

-

Does anyone Remember when Tom Clancy used to actually have lots of input into the game design, and the games themselves were realistic and authentic?

Well great way to turn all of that into a simpleton Brand Name.

Way to go Ubisoft.

This was the original cover though:

The thing, is that in those days, they had an arrangement that said you couldn't use the Japanese artwork, because they saw it as a threat to the western one or something. That's why all the covers from that time were awful.

I'd say the kingdom hearts revamp of all the FF characters. i wouldn't say 'worst', but i was kinda irked a bit. also this new Advent children cloud is almost unrecognizable compared to the old FF:VII cloud if not for the sword imo.

the reason why halo owns, is because it is simple and its just pure ownage, i used to think "oh yeah halo wow whats so special bout that" then i played it at school on a LAN game and i was like, "Now i can see why this game is so popular its simply easy to play and very fun to play and some of the funnest straightforward multiplayer with no hassles"

and back to what i was orinally going to say, can we get a comparison of the older designed master chief and the newer master chief?

The only major games that have used "power armor" are metriod, megaman, and halo.

If three games do the same thing over a span of countless years, that does not mean they are generic

In fact it means the opposite.

Well I was hyped for Halo back when it was a PC and mac title, and looked asthough it was going to meet what it actually promised.

I played throught it at launch on a friends Xbox, and we both acknowleged it was a decent FPS, but it simply didnt offer what it had been hyped before hand.

Hell I even flick through my huge collection of PC gaming magazines that covered Halo, all the way up until its Xbox release, and the result is astounding.

The final bi-product, on PC would have been somthing much more like Planetside, minus the MMO part. Then again that is a bit of an assumption.

l'll see if I can find some original pics, or i'll go to the lengths of scanning magazines. He looked rather similar, though his armour was much darker, and shaped a bit more differently.

Lucky u found some:

Flim, comics, and games have had freaking power armour for decades. Post WW2, comics were full of them - most about tales of Nazi Storm Troopers.

Even Wolfienstien 3D had Nazis in power armour.... Even Hitler in giant power armour.

Power armour is a frequent re-occurance in FPS games. At least with Metroid the power armour has a very unique and distinctive look.

Sigh

Your doing alot for yourself arent you.

MCs armour was pretty generic to begin with. I never denied that.

I do think the game changed a bit for the worse though, as the original concept of the game - huge open battelfield across the ring planet, sounded extremelly promising.

HERE IS AN ORIGINAL PREVIEW OF HALO!

Halo distinguishes itself on all fronts. First, the game is not mission based. The player is free to wage guerilla war on their own initiative and according to information and events generated on the fly. The attempt is to situate the player inside a larger conflict and give him or her, based on individual initiative and preference, the opportunity to make a difference in the conflagration. The game should flow differently for each gamer, each time through with nary a break throughout the experience (unless you pause to eat, drink or pee).

Bungie is also working on a universal physics model, which allows each item in the game world, be it human, jeep, aircraft or projectile to follow accurate physics and respond realistically. The E3 movie shows space marines bucking with the recoil of their rifles, swaying even with their own breathing. It shows a fallen marine slide realistically over a cliff and vehicles move with amazing realism, jeeps demonstrating solid and responsive suspension. Those demonstrating the game engine emphasized that moving a marine, driving a jeep or flying an aircraft (the player can hop into any in-game vehicle and take it for a spin) is all accomplished with the same controls, yet also demonstrated some advanced maneuvers with the vehicles that someone specializing in their use might master.

Halo is being designed to support online cooperative multiplay, where gamers are encouraged to specialize. A skillful driver partnered with a good machine gunner and a quick marine riding shotgun will be a formidable force in online play and all specialists will garner points for skillfully executing their chosen tasks. Multiplay will also support more antagonistic play where some will play Covenant soldiers and some Human marines.

Geez can you even comprehend the facts in my words?

Are we talking about films or comics? No

We are talking about games and I have never seen anything even closely resembling master chief's armour except that obscure pic you posted before. And also EVERYTHING remotely good gets an inpiration from previous creations. There are few things that are truly original. Also I fail to see how you can say Samus' suit is not generic and the one in Halo is.

Ok find a character that Samus resembles. Samus's power armour is very unique - evem moreso when the morph ball is included.

And the same power armour look was used through the 90s - very big, well after its use in films.

Here is concept art from Bungies sucessor to Halo, Marathon. They were following the trends as other developers were.

The image

Sheeesh, im not making up any of this.

Even I admitted Snake looks generic, and there is no denying MC doesent look generic as as hell. Sure he can look cool to you, but that doesent stop him from being genric.

edit*

And video games got insparation from film, comics, wargames ect.

I dont see why they shouldent be listsed.

Here is a early Warhammer 40k Space Marine....

Well by that logic

MGS4 is generic (military tough guy)

all the final fantasies are generic(metrosexual male lead characters)

Zelda series is generic(sword wielding adventurer saving the princess)

The only major games that have used "power armor" are metriod, megaman, and halo.

Planeforger

And Fallout, of course. ;)

Brotherhood of Steel FTW!

Power Armour - making a re-surgance in every Fallout:

So they were influeced by a game that THEY made. So?

The Armor of master chief is unique, maybe not to the caliber of samus' but it is nontheless

NO OTHER GAME HAS ANYTHING CLOSE TO THE HALO UNIVERSE

You see those elites in my sig? That is original

IMO the halo series' art style is like nothing I have ever seen before

Yes they were influnced by their last game, which was heavily influenced by films, and other games.

Look familiar to the marathon guy?

MCs armour is generic as hell, get over it already fanboy.

As for the Elites, im not going into that area, but I can say they are quite an original design.

And There are loads of other games with much more than the PUNY Halo universe. You are simply to short sighted and wound up in the world of Halo.

And Halos art s.tyle is simply flamboyant and colourful. Sure you can love it, but in comparison to other FPS out there - let alone stacks of other games, its totally buried.

/ And since when was those two comments even part of the topic :| ?

*one thing this thread has confirmed is how short sighted Halo fanboys can become. At least chaps like Spartan70 stand above the rest.

How to make a once fantastic tactical shooter generic as hell?

Re-do it for consoles.

-

Does anyone Remember when Tom Clancy used to actually have lots of input into the game design, and the games themselves were realistic and authentic?

Well great way to turn all of that into a simpleton Brand Name.

Way to go Ubisoft.

skrat_01

the rainbow six games changed a lot over the years. i remember the rs game on pc from 98. totally different to compare to how vegas is. imo i think they did a nice job reinventing themselves to the franchise that hasnt been as good over the years.

The franchise was fantastic up until AFTER Raven Shield.

I didnt mind the console offshoots, simply because they suited the patforms. Then Ubi decided to have Red Storm, turn the series upsidown and turn it into a arcade shooter, for ALL platforms - that was Lockdown and Vegas.

Sure Vegas isnt a bad game, its simply the barstard child bi-product of a great series, that has been dumbed down and strangled of what made it unique and individual in the first place. Now its an arcade present day shooter.

Quite frankly it would have been better to keep the titles sperete, like the GRAW games.

GRAW on 360 suits the 360, GRAW on PC is completely different to GRAW on 360 - and suits the platform, and feels like a sucessor to the original Ghost Recon games.

And they are both great in their own rights - I have GRAW 1 + 2 (and original Ghost Recon) on PC and 360.

Rainbow 6 Vegas though. I HATE it - as you have probably assumed. :P

(ive played through the demo multiple times though - on 360 - out of curiosity. Its knowhere as good as Raven Shield, but suits console gameplay)

YES! And they did the same crap to Ghost Recon.

GR 2 was passable as a member of the serise but GRAWs are just to far gone. They should be their own franchise just like VEGAS should but they just leech off the Rainbow and Ghost Recon francises.

Indeed.

GR2 was ok. It SUITEd the Xbox - much more than the GR PC port.

GRAW on 360 really is a linear barstard child - but it suits the platform.

GRAW on PC, really is different to the original GR, but thankfully it has the same on the fly tactical planning, soldier equiping, and is much more tactical - and offers more freedom than the console versions - by a longshot.

GRAW on PC is different to the original, but a worthy effort, into getting the title to suit the PC platform, and feel like an evolution in the series.

I still miss the stealthyness, and VERY wide open areas of the first though.

mp demo of vegas did no justice. doesnt look like that on the full game. i played the demo and i didnt care for it. luckily my friend bought the game and i ended up playing it at his house. i really enjoyed the game and i like how there are all these different game modes you can play so you dont get bored.

Nah its the SP demo I downloaded. Ive played MP on my cousins PC, and I thought noting of it.

Yea its not a bad game, but it should stay this way for CONSOLES. It suits consoles much, much more - like GRAW 360.

In the PC realm it simply sucks, and there should be a sequal to Raven Shield for PC.

Its no wonder Vegas and Lockdown wernt well recieved my loads / many of PC gamers.

Master Chiefs armor doesnt look like that at all, only thing from the Halo universe that you can compare the marines from Aliens is the Marines from the Halo universe which I dont mind since well,Aliens is one of my favorite movies and I grew up on the graphic novels/comics and just be glad that they at least took something thats great and not crappy.
