I don't get it.. Sure they are making great money of steam, but seriously, HL3 would generate so much profit...KloneyBut imagine the pressure. It would be hyped as the third coming, 12/10 game...

What does it have anything to do with the fact that Valve develop those games themselves? The gameplay were perfect. So no, even if they develop Half Life 3 now, I don't think there will be any problem in term of gameplay.

people would still buy it no matter what.
Imagine a world where a company makes what they feel compelled to make because they feel confident its the right time to make it... then imagine a world where a company just bleeds something to death to squeeze every last cent out of it killing any type of lasting legacy the property may have... Praise be Valve.
Well Anyways, I really do hope Half Life 3 comes out, its definitely needed. A brand new, state of the art engine. HL1 and HL2 were both the best looking games graphically upon release (despite releasing after Doom 3 and FC1)
Â
So Imagine HL3 will graphics that surpass even Crysis 3's. And then they can make a new CS game, Team Fortress 3, Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3 on the new engine. Would be awesome!
HL3 would generate so much profit...Kloney
As strange as it may sound there are other things that are important, not just profits. They want to make sure HL3 is a good game first. The only reason why they haven't released HL3 is because they're not happy with what they have most probably.Â
Unlike EA or Activision, Valve doesn't have shareholders to please so they are not forced to release sequels of popular franchises every year to keep the stock prices high.
They've done it before and they could surely do it again tbf, the pressure shouldn't be an excuse..Kloney
The pressure is what makes them take so long for each game. 6 years for Half Life 2, 6+ years and counting for HL3 (and we still have yet to see a single screenshot, so I think that shows how far along the game is).
Half Life 1 was a ground breaking game and Valve tried to top it with each new one. IMO they have succeeded with HL2 as it was spectacular too.
I don't know why they are taking so incredibly long with HL3 though and are afraid to show anything of it.
[QUOTE="sweeten16"]They should release a steam box with half life 3 exclusive to steam at launch.Lumpy311
Oh, quit it you, if Steam had Half Life as exclusive System Wars would be useless since there would be only a single clear winner.
Â
Lmao... Here you go again!:roll:
Â
If Valve only released HL3 on Steam, they'd be assuring finacial failure... Just like they did with the first HL, HL2, The Orange Box, Left 4 Dead, and Portal 2, they'd have to release it for console, PERIOD!!! Steam is NO where near as profitable as the console and mobile market; which is why damn-near ALL PC developers (including Valve) have moved to the console market to earn better profit... Developers won't make anything back only selling to "beggars" (hermits).

What "proof"??? Are you stupid??? So you're telling me, Valve did not port the first Half-life to PS2; they did not port Half-Life 2 to the original Xbox; they did not release Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 for Xbox 360; they did not put out the Orange Box on both consoles; they did not make both console versions of Portal 2 along side PC version, with the PS3 version being the definitive version out of all three? Are you really this blind??? Or are you just pretending to be...Â

Damn straight. People bitch about publishers churning out games every year but when a company has the abiliy to take their time, they complain about that as well.Imagine a world where a company makes what they feel compelled to make because they feel confident its the right time to make it... then imagine a world where a company just bleeds something to death to squeeze every last cent out of it killing any type of lasting legacy the property may have... It has been awhile though, but it's Valve and they do quality shit like, all the time. If they were just sitting on their ass instead of making Steam the most interesting Digital platform on the internet I can understand. Instead just look at Steam and then STFU.Â
They just released family sharing where you can share your WHOLE GODDAMN STEAM COLLECTION to friend and fam..Â
Cut some slack.

Maybe it's YOU who just doesn't get it. Steam is a huge success and so is Valve. They are releasing PC made games to consoles (ports). So YOU are getting the ports and it has NO impact on the PC side except it gives Valve more money to make QUALITY PC games that will also go to console. Anyone knows the PC version is supremely better of all those games you listed. L4D sucks on consoles and a big reason is that it is made with the PC in mind; including the UI. So they just port over the best they can to make more money to make PC games. It's not that they are abandoning PC by going to the consoles..it is actually the opposite. And if you had a PC and actually used Steam and saw the user statistics you would not be speaking this ignorantly.Â
They probably aren't hurting. It's not like they are THQ, lol. It sucks that THQ is having problems they were a good dev oh and it will be a long time till we see HL3 if ever[QUOTE="metal_zombie"]they must not need moneyheretrix
most people dont care about Half Life, jsut a really loud internet minority

Yup - people over 21.
Valve, per employee, are worth more than Apple & Google, by the way: http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/15/valve-makes-more-money-per-employee-than-google-or-apple/
I doubt they care too much about the profit they'd potentially make on HL3, but moreso on the fact it's going to be the most criticized & built up sequel of all time.
Although I want to play it i realize that these things, they take time. Â It will be a huge surprise when it is announced and lots of people will go crazy, especially if it is on a new amazing engine. Â The Gaben has stated that the new engine is really far along in development and they are just waiting on a game to release it with. Â
What interesting is now that DOTA2 is out, Valve currently has no announced game in development.  That means we should see something soon and I hope its HL3, although I wouldn't be disappointed L4D3 or some new IP which they are rumored to be working on releases first.  As long as HL3 stays true to the HL formula, I will be happy.

Agree with you completely. I'm perfectly fine with Valve taking a long time on this one, it should not be rushed one bit. It's been damn near 10 years since HL2, I can wait double that for the proper ending.i'm concerned that valve might become the next Id SoftwareAlthough I want to play it i realize that these things, they take time. Steam is only successful in the fact that it hasn't failed... But nowhere near as profitable as the console and mobile market; I don't care if their games are ports or not, I'm just simply pointing out why, companies like Valve see the necessities of console development and gaming;
Â
That statement made absolutly no sense... So you're basically saying, at some point, Valve is gonna abandon console development? For what??? As long as there are consoles and a mobile market, and as long as those markets are making up 40, 50, 60, 70 percent of the gaming market, they won't be abandoning anything; Unless you have a link of Gabe saying anything like that, you should probably just keep that nonsense to yourself... Because it's stupid!
Â
I like how you and your other hermit cheerleaders try to make Valve out to be anything other than a "game developer" in the general sense. Yea, Gabe has talked a lot of sh!t about console but, he also see the necessity of the market; Gabe mostly wishes consoles were more open for modding and Steam;
