Even though 99/100 of the acclaimed games get called overrated...
This month EGM had a massive three page article about Nintendo's approval process, or lack therof, and how it's turning Wii and DS into garbage dumps for shovelware. It's truly shocking how low Nintendo's standards for third parties are in comparison to MS and Sony, and they're not doing anything to rectify it. Also, they pointed out something that even I missed-- in 2003, Nintendo changed the "Official Nintendo Seal of Quality" to just plain the "Official Nintendo Seal." Basically, with Sony and MS, even though crap does end up on their systems, they at least have a huge approval process that devs must go through to minimize the ammounts of utter garbage on the system. Nintendo has no concept approval process at all though, so anything goes, including crap like Chicken Shoot which is a straight up port of a GBA game!Timstuff
Who cares really? I have a Wii and as long as good games DO come out I'm cool. The way capitalism works is if people release crap that nobody buys, then they lose money and stop making crap. Now...if people are buying the crap and therefore encouraging that MORE crap get made, is that really Nintendo's fault?
Frankly, I think this is all just premature whining from EGM (although I do like the mag). The Wii isn't even 1 year old yet. Give it time for more good titles to come out and for the companies making crap to get properly weeded out.
[QUOTE="Timstuff"]I wonder if Wii will ever get a port of Big Rigs? :(neonvzla
So, after getting your butt handed in silver plate several time by the M$ crowd, now you are going to try with the other console?.
You are as lame as ever, Sony Fanboy.
It's too late. Wii is already getting the sequel to Big Rigs. :(

The Wii has it's great games. So why care for the bad ones?
EGM is right, shovelware is present, and it is in every console. The Wii's case however, is more glorifyed. I agree with them.
But cmon now. Who cares about these bad games? Oh that's right, only fanboys. Let the Wii sell, even with the crappy games. Sales don't matter, right? The good games are going to come out. And that is what everyone should pay attention to.

So Nintendo sucks because of budget games nobody plays?
mdisen2
If only that was the case...unfortunately lots of them end up being some of the better selling titles in any given month.

It affects all of us. If people buy more copies of crap games that cost nothing to make, than great games that cost a fortune to make, it doesn't take a mathematician to work out which direction publishers will head.
Should I pour my heart and soul into this awe-inspiring niche title that will sell 100,000 copies and not even break even until it ends up as a $20 "Classics" title, or should I slap together some shovelware that rakes in one hundred beeellion dollars overnight and cost less than 50 grand to produce. Sadly, our hobby is a money game, and it's not about to change.

And less good games, sadly. :(
This is the dark side of shovelware. If shovelware sells, then publishers are less motivated to make good games. And that is bad for us all.

and..... the ps2 had loads upon loads of shovelware, that didn't make it any less of a console...
Part of the reason why i think Wii will not last as long as the other 2 consoles.Navy_Sealz
actually thats a reason it could lasts longer. Which is sad.
It's funny, because back in the NES days, Nintendo had strict policies regarding the number of games a company could produce in a year (hence the creation of offshoots like LJN and Ultra).
It is pretty sad that Nintendo is letting no-name developers put all kinds of garbage on their system.
I'm still supporting the Wii (oh no!) for its first-party games, plus a few third-parties like GHIII and Z&W, but the amount of shovelware is just appalling.
Imean, at least Nintendo makes GOOD casual games (Nintendogs)... as opposed to Ninjabread Man.
Then why do you care what people do with THEIR money?.

Its a net loss, people have a limited number of entertainment dollars. Any money going to crappy games (see: Fary Cry Vengeance, Red Steel, Pokemon Battle Revolution) detracts from the money going towards better quality development efforts. That doesn't exactly encourage quality development.

I see Wii Play and Mario Party 8 in the top ten.
I find it worth mentioning the literal mountains of crap that are out AND STILL coming out for the PS2. The only reason we don't see such a repeat on the PS3 and 360 is that it's probally too pricey to develope worthless, low return games for.
The Wii though, still easy to make low end games for cheap. The trick lies in actually taking the time to make a good looking game.

yes but then enough people will realize after the market is overfilled with half-made games and the market itself will suffer because people will know that games being made are bad but then the developers will realize they need to make a quality game to make a profit...

mario party isn't terrible like people make it on here its fun but defintely not the greatest game, and wii play is a wiimote with a tech demo i mean people couldn't find wii motes so they just bought wii play when it came out and the games are fun for a while its kind of like wii sports
Part of the reason why i think Wii will not last as long as the other 2 consoles.Navy_Sealz
By your logic, the PS1 and PS2 should have died out because about 70% of the games on both those consoles were absolute garbage, they were dumping grounds for crap 3rd party games, and do not think that all 3rd parties will not make attempts to make good games for the Wii, EA has tried and obviously failed with MySims and Boogie, but then again it is EA after all, they suck regardless and I would rather they stick to making quality multiplatform games like NHL 08 and the like instead of making crud like Boogie or Call of Duty. At least Square Enix is giving the Wii support in the form of a bunch of games, while they may be spin offs at least the Wii is getting exclusive games from them as well as Grasshopper Studios (Suda 51). Every console will get bad games, the PS3 has Lair and the 360 has Blue Dragon, just because the Wii happens to get more then other consoles does not mean anything other then the developers who are making the crap they do are just pathetic and should not even be bothering to spend the money to make a bad game that only a few people are going to buy.
As a gamer I support the indie development scene and I want to see more new companies instead of milkage from EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix,Segaand Capcom who all seem to have run out of ideas for making new games and instead are bent on rehashing the life out of their franchises and making crappy spin offs.

Its been virtually the same damn thing since the beginning and they couldn't even bother themselves to include widescreen support. I'm sorry but thats crap, even if its fun so are the last seven (mostly) and so why should I rebuy the same thing again?

The series is really a hit or miss. Certain iterations are pretty good, others you can pass easily. You just need to do research on it. The same thing could be said about shovelware/3rd party support. Crap and gems really. I would like to think that the consumer is smart (smrt) enough to differentiate between them.
Besides it's only the first year. Give it some time. The majority of big title game have historically come out on the second and third year of a console's life. Right now we're just seeing the hasty stopgaps from the developers. Look around a bit, you can find some fairly promising 3rd party game coming out next year. (I hear it's the same with the PS3.)
It's a good thing, makes it easier on developers. People should really stop whining, it's not like if the shovelware was gone their would be more quality titles. If you don't like it, don't buy the games.Devil-Itachi
Yup, plus I seem to recall the 360 getting shovel ware as well when it came out, ya know like Bomberman which was horrid in every way humanly possible,Sonic The Hedgehog, Tenchu Z, Dynasty Warriors Gundam.

Nice job bringing up games across a nearly two year timespan. I've already demonstrated how much more frequent utter crap is on Wii than on the PS3 or 360.

You and the other sheep are missing the point. It's not about games getting low scores, it's about games that are utter trash to begin with. Lair did get horrible review scores, but it is by no means "shovelware", as it had a high budget, high ambitions, and high production value. Fine, it failed, but it was at least an ambitious title. 95% of Wii games are low budget, with low (or no) ambitions, and have low production values. That is, 95% of Wii games don't aspire to be anything more than mediocre trash.
Another thing, it's not about absolute numbers. It's not about the 360 or PS3 having more crap titles than Wii, but it's about the percentage of crap that makes up each console's library. Wii's percentage of garbage is well over 90%. The same can't be said for the other consoles.
But this is to be expected when the Wii is targetted at non-gamers that couldn't tell a good game from trash to save their lives. Nintendo is making big money catering to that market, but with that comes a high percentage of games that cater to that market, and almost all games that cater to that market are garbage. Sheep like to crow about Wii's sales (as opposed to Wii games), but the sales aren't based on game-quality, so the crowing rings hollow to those of us that are more concerned about a quality gaming experience than sales.
