Probably can be corrected with a patch.
It's probably not as good as a dedicated 4k blu-ray player that costs 300 bucks, but it can't be that bad as an all in one player.
This does sound like something that can be patched.
I actually do own quite a few 4K UHD movies and standard blu-rays as well. I've only tested out a 5 minute scene in the beginning in the Revenant and it looked pretty good to me with my settings on the LG OLED 55E7 model I have. I'll watch some films in the next few days and check them out.
I own a ton of 4K bluray movies. As a 3D early adopter,I grow more and more concerned over 4K every day
Console manufacturers have latched on to 4k far too early, they should have went for 60+ fps first.
I can understand why they did it though, 4k is much more appealing and exciting to casual gamers than 60 frames per second. Especially when Joe Blogs doesn't understand the advantages that higher frame rates bring when they are so used to 30 fps (and often less). To this day there are many people who believe "the human eye can't see more than 30 frames per second" crap. In reality the only ones who benefit from pushing 4k gaming are console and TV manufacturers.
@BassMan: Yes it is good value... your point?
His point is, get a PC if you Xbox fanboys really care about power of a 4K gaming.
I have a PC :) but I prefer MMOs and survival games on it.
most of my friends are on PS4/XB1 anyways
Meh. I’ll probably be fine with it myself. All I know is that I think the Xbox One X is a good value for my money.

I agree, the 4k player is better than any random chinese brand.
This article is overdone, the XB1X player is not that bad.
Samsung and Sony offer high end 4k blu ray players close to the XB1X price tag... but the MS product includes a gaming system.
It's a good value.
4k Blu ray still has a terrible selection of movies, and it looks like it's not being supported as much since digital HD i a thing.
Digital HD doesn't have comparable bit-rate as 4K Blu-ray content.
@FLOPPAGE_50: Oh Yeah I’m sure that it is better, calling it a “disaster” just screams of hyperbole to me so I’m not surprised.
I have tons of 4K Bluray's, haven't tried one on the X yet. I also a Samsung 4K Bluray player, was seven hundred something CDN when I bought it, I doubt the X will compare and that's also why I was never salty that my Pro didn't play them either.

The format just came out barely a year ago, of course it has a "horrible selection of movies". Although that's all relative, it does actually have hundreds of titles already - including most major new releases.
The gamechanger will be when we get catalog stuff like the Disney Marvel movies, Star Wars, Hobbit (48fps release possible?). My understanding is Disney has basically been on hold until Dolby Vision gets sorted out. They've release a couple of "new release" UHD titles (Gaurdians of Galaxy 2 already, and Thor:Ragnarok will be UHD), but I'm pretty confident all the Marvel releases will be repackaged as 4K/UHD with HDR/Dolby Vision.
Dark Knight Trilogy is getting that treatment, and i can't wait to get that one (should be a major upgrade over the blu-rays for the IMAX scenes in the last 2 movies and Batman Begins which was actually not brought over to blu-ray/HD very well at all. New 4K transfers should do these movies alot of good, and I can think of hundreds of films in the same circumstance... just because their old "HD" version actually was never very good.
i prefer 3D to 4K
unfortunately 3D is on life support.
It's not even on life support, it's dead (at least in the sense you can't actually buy a 3D-TV right now).
This actually pisses me off because I have a bunch of 3D blu-rays (probably like 100), and have only seen about half of them in 3D. I never actually had a 3D TV, but I had a buddy that did so I occasionally watched them at their place (they obviously enjoyed me supplying the free blu-rays to watch). I never minded paying the extra $5, and sometimes I'd get deals where the 3D version was the same price anyway. Unfortunately their 3D TV died. Unless they bring back 3D TV models, I might never get to see the other half of the 3D movies. All the manufacturers should have at least kept it as a feature in one of their mid-range or high end models. I might lament that I didn't get one of those OLED's that had 3D, but I just didn't need a new TV yet and they were rediculously expensive. I figured I'd wait a few years for them to hit $1000,but I never imagined they'd just "drop" 3D. My understanding is they eliminated it in the last couple years because they were all going for "maximum brightness" levels, and the 3D layer was an impediment to that. It was just about having the marketing bragging rights, not any practical reason or even cost savings reason.
Damn that sucks. I was wanting an Xbox One X (or S) primarily for Ultra Blu-Ray support. I started adding 4K Blu-Rays to my collection recently but don't have a player.
Might have to get a a $150 dedicated player instead
Honestly, i had the same issue with the Xbox One S when i first got it.
I connected it to the KS8000 and everything looked off compared to the standalone player i have downstairs (same TV)
After tinkering a bit and a short call to MS, Xbox One S (and i assume the X) have a built in calibration feature that is used to get the best picture for your TV. They said that every TV is different and handles HDR differently which is why they included the feature.
The standard setting doesnt work for every TV
I noticed that the article didnt mention the calibration at all, which i suspect is the response he will get from MS.
Its not enough to just adjust the black levels to get the best HDR picture.
GT Sport has the same calibration feature in-game to tailor to your TV
Until there is a standard in HDR, calibration is an absolute necessity.
I'm running an X on a Samsung KS800D, the player seems completely competent in terms of function. In SDR there is no problem whatsoever, when in HDR this issue is visible for me as well.
Semi-washed out image and grey black bars. This is clearly software related and needs to be fixed, but it's by no means a disaster or a deal breaker. That writer is going off the deep end with hyperbole and dramatics
Try this. It's from the link MS sent me:
Calibrating Your Television
Once your Xbox One S is setup and ready to go, you may want to fine-tune your TV to get the best possible picture. The Xbox One S includes a very simple HDTV calibration walk-through, which can help optimize your brightness, contrast, and color to get the best possible picture for your Games and Movies. To access this feature, go to Settings > Display & sound > Video output > Calibrate HDTV. Here you can walk through a few simple steps to improve your visual experience
Every HDR capable player should include a calibration feature until there is a standard.
I have different settings for my PC, Xbox One D, and PS4 because they all handle it differently. Luckily the KS8000 allows you to save settings per-input so I don't have to do it every time
Seems Forbes has problems with their X1X. Why isn't anyone providing sources from a real gaming review site?
Forbes? Lol
@xantufrog: https://www.whathifi.com/microsoft/xbox-one-x/review
"We weren’t particularly impressed with the Xbox One S’s handling of 4K Blu-rays, so we’re pleased to say things have moved along with the Xbox One X.
The biggest gains have been in the picture department. Play the opening battle between King Arthur’s army and the Saxons and the One X looks more vivid and detailed than its sibling. The X looks clearer and the lines drawn appear sharper.
The picture pops more too. As fireballs rain down from the sky, scattering soldiers like ten-pins, the yellow flames burn so fiercely you can almost feel the temperature rise.
When the alien ship breaches the ocean towards the latter stages of the film and Bumblebee and Nemesis Prime start knocking spots off each other, the sunlight pierces the sky with impressive intensity and bounces off the surface of the water."
Forbes article vs Whathifi Article :^]
And now thanks to your shitty topic your believers are spreading this 'news' on Gamespot articles. Bait thread :/

Because mods are doing their best to keep the anything MS Xbox SmearCampaign alive. Mighty X1X has the SW Barnyard shook to the core.
Good stuff. :P
Haven't tried the Blue Ray player yet but I watched Alien Covenant 4K on the X1S the other day and it looked spectacular, so I'm not sure what issue he is referring to and maybe I am just not noticing it. Hopefully if there is something wrong with the X drive they patch it, seeing as how I Was satisfied with the X1S BR player, this isn't really worrying me
