XBL to use user dedicated servers

So XBL users pay Microsoft an annual fee for peer to peer matchmaking, and have to provide their own dedicated servers? Isn't this the equivelant of going to a restaurant, paying for dinner but having to cook the dinner yourself and provide your own silverware, glasses and plates?

and exactly where does it say the user will have to pay anything? it just says the user will have to download an app on their pc that turns it into a server. for all we know, it could be free.

server software is always free lol, this is cool since someone somewhere will likely be able to make a modded server, plus they'll have dedicated servers, this will just give some people the ability to set up a custom server for friends =D which i dont' think is doo bad.

Dedicated servers are never free.

but that's the thing. you're not going to connect to a dedicated server. your computer will be a dedicated server and you'll host the games on it.

Well, yes. On PSN, Sony provides dedicated servers, free of charge. On XBL, users pay 50 bucks a month for dedicated servers they have to provide themselves apparantely. :P

but in order to play this game you'd already need a gold account. the dedicated server is you8r pc and likely has no cost associated meaning no extra charge.

no extra charge =/= no charge. Hence, XBL users pay 50 bucks a year for peer 2 peer matchmaking and have to provide their own dedicated servers... no wonder charging for XBL flopped on the PC.

Make your point little boy.

he's trying to say you have to pay $40 a year for xbl and then another cost for section 8. all the article he linked says that the user will need to download an app on his computer to use it as a dedicated server. if anything, it's going to be free. he just didn't read the article properly.

if yoru running that software on your pc, and not the game, then your pc will be a dedicated server for that game.... that software is alwyas free, for every game i've ever seen. The hardware however is not, you have to have a pc to turn into a dedicated server and internet to be able to use it. But either way the company can set up the servers, or you can now. Which i believe they said they were going to have any way. But the nice part about being able to set up our own servers, sometimes tweaks can be made, like i've seen a COD game with 80players because someone set up the server to allow that many people.

Section 8 looks really bad. An online game published by SouthPeak = no publicity. This will be the next Warpath. There's not need for dedicated servers when only 2 people will be playing it. A waste, really.

well if your paying for xbl you already have to have an existing high speed modem. if your on the internet, there's a very good chance your on a pc. the software is to turn your pc into a dedicated server when your playing the game. in all likelihood, it is free. tc didn't read the article properly.

I just read the link, and I didn't see anything about Microsoft doing anything. Its not even their game. Also TC thinks XBL uses P2P, which shows he doesn't know what hes talking about.

It will be free, they never charge for it since people making custom servers means they won't have to use as many " developer TimeGate will be hosting some as well, incidentally -- Section 8 will support multiplayer matches of up to 32 players" TimeGate will be hosting some, up to 32 players, but with the software in our hands, we'll probably be able to add more. Usually with the server software, Much more tweaks can be put onto a game then hosting it from within a game.

xbl isn't paying through peer to peer, its actually paying to be connected through M$ servers, which is why many companies use peer to peer on xbox. It just works out well with TruSkill, so you have games like halo's connections, which are awesome. And companies can choose to use peer to peer or dedicated on xbl

Its up to the developers whether or not they want to setup D-servers. So far, only SONY does it because they are the only ones with the money to do so. Every other game uses the same user-client network XBL users do.

Uh, UFC 2009 for Xbox 360 is played on Gamespy's servers via Gamespy matchmaking. All XBL does is point you towards the appropriate matchmaking system, unless the game has a dedicated server.

Any game that uses dedicated servers for xbl doesn't cost any more, so they are free too! What we are paying for is the ability to play with people online, party chat, TruSkill match making, and some other random garbage. play online should be free imo. But M$ is all about standardization

They probabaly still use matchmaking, because its M$ gateway, they put the toll there, unless its like FFXI and you don't have to pay for live to play online.

you do realize that not all ps3 games are hosted on dedicated servers right? you do realize that games like warhawk are actually p2p based right? and you do realise that ms also provides dedicated servers for games right? see, i can be a smartass to.

Warhawk server farm Try again.

i was really hoping you said that. :D

here's why:

Those of you familiar with Warhawk already know that the game features a very unique server method that we call "Integrated Game Server" or IGS for short - the industry needs more acronyms don't you think :-)

The Warhawk IGS method means that instead of us forcing players to be connected to the SONY "mothership" for any and all games, we instead let players host their own servers on their own PS3s. This is fairly unique and it enables a couple of really nice benefits.

you know what that second bullet means? it means p2p. the server farm is only used to route the players but the games are hosted by the users own ps3. here's a link.

btw: look at that pic closer. those are ps3's not actual servers.

[QUOTE="savagetwinkie"] server software is always free lol, this is cool since someone somewhere will likely be able to make a modded server, plus they'll have dedicated servers, this will just give some people the ability to set up a custom server for friends =D which i dont' think is doo bad.savagetwinkie

the only dedicated server will be the users own pc. you're not connecting to a dedicated server.

here's a quote from the article:

"Players will be able to download an application on their PC that will allow them to turn it into a dedicated server for the game."

if yoru running that software on your pc, and not the game, then your pc will be a dedicated server for that game.... that software is alwyas free, for every game i've ever seen.

You really think that Microsoft is going to allow anything like that for an Xbox 360 game? They don't even let custom mods for Unreal - I doubt we will be seeing any 80 players online for the 360 version of COD4. The best that this is going to do is what it was intended to do, give players dedicated servers - which is great, so hopefully you don't have to pay for it.

i hate to say this, but just cuz a player host doesn't mean its p2p, p2p there is no single host, just a primary, but your still connected to everyone else, so this makes it easy to switch hosts if they DC or something, kinda how halo doesn't end the game, or disconnect everyone. I'm not sure how warhawk works, if the host leaves does it try migrating it? This is partially why peer 2 peer is used alot on live though, M$ has really good connection algorithms, so it works well. Where if you were to play COD WAW on ps3, it has a very hard time migrating the server ;(

I have no idea but I was playing the 1 vs 100 live beta earlier and it had over 90,000 people playing in the same episode. That's crazy.

oh i read the whole article. which is why i posted it. what you missed is that sony's dedicated servers are only ranked games and are slow. for all other matches on warhawk, an individuals ps3 acts like a small server to connect to larger one to play against someone else's personal server, in other words, a p2p network. the "dedicate server farm" you pictured are actually hundreds of ps3's tht do nothing more than direct one gamer to another. the games aren't actually hosted on them. it's still p2p.

They don't have a choice if we own the servers, I'm not saying custum content but having the server and being able to tweak everything about the game, if theres spawn invincibility likely theres a timer for that, physics settings, everything, thats how most server software works, this could be more limited, though M$ can likely say they aren't allowed to have us download stuff off the server. IT really depends on teh company making the server software, it says they'll have them with up to 32 players, it doesn't sound like its goign to restrict us to that though.

Nah, they are super fast. How does this change the fact that Sony provides Dedicated servers for play on warhawk? The Peer to Peer is just a supplement for people who want smaller scale games.

the servers that are used are only to direct the ps3's, the servers themselves don't actually host the game (except of course for sony's own dedicated servers but those are used only for ranked games.) ms does something similar for its online games.

it changes things in that you said that all sony online games run through a dedicated server when in fact there are games that use p2p.

and exactly where does it say the user will have to pay anything? it just says the user will have to download an app on their pc that turns it into a server. for all we know, it could be free.

it's probably limited in that it only allows for shorter lag time. i doubt the dev are ms will allow the user to bustomize any aspect of the game itself (other than choosing the level and weapons of course.)
