oh i read the whole article. which is why i posted it. what you missed is that sony's dedicated servers are only ranked games and are slow. for all other matches on warhawk, an individuals ps3 acts like a small server to connect to larger one to play against someone else's personal server, in other words, a p2p network. the "dedicate server farm" you pictured are actually hundreds of ps3's tht do nothing more than direct one gamer to another. the games aren't actually hosted on them. it's still p2p.
Nah, they are super fast. How does this change the fact that Sony provides Dedicated servers for play on warhawk? The Peer to Peer is just a supplement for people who want smaller scale games.it changes things in that you said that all sony online games run through a dedicated server when in fact there are games that use p2p.
Warhawk is run through a dedicated server. Just because it has a supplemental Peer to Peer system, doesn't change the fact that it's still has dedicated servers for large scale play. All of this is free, by the way unlike XBL which charges you 50 bucks a year... for peer to peer connections,[QUOTE="cowgriller"]Free and MS in the same sentence!? End of the World!? :oand exactly where does it say the user will have to pay anything? it just says the user will have to download an app on their pc that turns it into a server. for all we know, it could be free.
II_Seraphim_II
lol  thanks for the cheap laugh. but hey, at least they don't charge over $100 for a service pack update*cough*apple*cough*

You really think that Microsoft is going to allow anything like that for an Xbox 360 game? They don't even let custom mods for Unreal - I doubt we will be seeing any 80 players online for the 360 version of COD4. The best that this is going to do is what it was intended to do, give players dedicated servers - which is great, so hopefully you don't have to pay for it.mgs_freak91They don't have a choice if we own the servers, I'm not saying custum content but having the server and being able to tweak everything about the game, if theres spawn invincibility likely theres a timer for that, physics settings, everything, thats how most server software works, this could be more limited, though M$ can likely say they aren't allowed to have us download stuff off the server. IT really depends on teh company making the server software, it says they'll have them with up to 32 players, it doesn't sound like its goign to restrict us to that though.
it's probably limited in that it only allows for shorter lag time. i doubt the dev are ms will allow the user to bustomize any aspect of the game itself (other than choosing the level and weapons of course.)
We really don't know yet, but if we have the software, likely we'll be able to do more with it. I mention the them putting up 32 players, since, they didn't say the servers are limited to 32 players, but thats how much they would support. likely we'll get some freedom with this, if not, we can still hack it lol. The game side we can't do anything on, but anything the server handles then its pretty much fair game. It probably won't be as restricted as setting up a match from within a game[QUOTE="Bluray001"][QUOTE="cowgriller"]

it pays for upgrades too, and dedicated party chat servers.[QUOTE="cowgriller"]Dedicated servers are never free.It would be if it works the way he said. Your PC would be the dedicated server. I find it to be a pretty interesting idea and something I would also like to see in PS3 games as an option. I wouldn't have a problem using my PC in this way. its not going to be M$ software, what was that company again? its theirs, the game itself has to pass M$ stuff, but how do they handle servers? we might even get to play for free on our own servers, not that it matters since we'll have to pay for live to play any other game.edit: theres -> theirs

don't worry. grammar mistakes happen to everyone. the users dedicated server will probably connect to the regional server or even the main server itself to provide for regional matchmaking with low lag times. honestly, we'll have to wait for more info to come out but that's just my guess.

Actually your probably right, re-reading it, section 8 is actually the name of the game, it will support 32 players, but we'll just have to wait and see, but likely 32 players, but we'll have to wait and see. Likely though if it did limit the player count, that doens't mean the thing can't be hacked, you just might have to invite 64 people in to play lol.[QUOTE="savagetwinkie"] its not going to be M$ software, what was that company again? its theirs, the game itself has to pass M$ stuff, but how do they handle servers? we might even get to play for free on our own servers, not that it matters since we'll have to pay for live to play any other game.

Well thank you! ;)lol, i think i found a use for my ps3, install linux onto it and turn it into a server for xbox games! this makes me pleasedsavagetwinkiecool would that even work? it is a good idea i guess about this. a lot of people that play PC make their own servers. my friend uses his computer as a dedicated server. it is a good idea i guess. people would have to go onto their computer
You're title is misleading. XBL users will NOT have to provide their own dedicated servers. It's just optional for them.
[QUOTE="Bluray001"]
XBL to use user dedicated servers
So XBL users pay Microsoft an annual fee for peer to peer matchmaking, and have to provide their own dedicated servers? Isn't this the equivelant of going to a restaurant, paying for dinner but having to cook the dinner yourself and provide your own silverware, glasses and plates?
XBL doesn't use Peer to Peer.
For games, yes it does. That's how it works for the most part on PC. Expect, not everyone has to pay... only those organizing the servers and their donation providers.
And really, at least they are finally letting people use servers... don't complain.
I agree, this is awesome, but the sub-cost is still making XBL worthy of serious indignation from Xbox owners and serious lulz and pwnage from everyone else. MS just realizes that if they let this model thrive on Xbox without the preliminary sub costs, XBL would go the way of Windows Live. The PC gaming platform is evidence that with this online gaming model, the platform is never hurting for bandwidth. User-hosted dedicated servers with no extraneous revenue generating schemes from the manufacturer are all gamers and publishers need.... too bad MS always needs a little something extra, huh? That's how it works for the most part on PC. Expect, not everyone has to pay... only those organizing the servers and their donation providers.

ORLY? When's the last time Steam asked you to pick up a new subscription card?90% of servers in most popular PC FPS's are payed for by users, I don't see any difference.
TOAO_Cyrus1
Good for them. The next question is, when will MS stop forcing us to pay toll before we can enjoy them?EA and a few others provide servers for free on XBL.
PS3_3DO
Seriously, edit the title. You've made stuff up in the hopes no ones going to read it. You've failed.
So in order to play this game you need a wireless network to play this game? Do the recent 360's come with in bulit wireless? if not than thats pretty fail, if they do then fair enough

but in order to play this game you'd already need a gold account. the dedicated server is you8r pc and likely has no cost associated meaning no extra charge.
In other words you have to pay $50 a year to play on your own server. no extra charge =/= no charge. Hence, XBL users pay 50 bucks a year for peer 2 peer matchmaking and have to provide their own dedicated servers... no wonder charging for XBL flopped on the PC. Not once did it say users will HAVE TO provide their own servers, the article said WILL BE ABLE TO. Your twisting its words, and very badly.Cows are amazing. How they can make a good thing looks bad is very impressive.
Lets keep in mind, PSN has few games which use dedicated servers. In reality, only about 4 more games use dedicated servers on PSN, as opposed to Xbox Live.
This game will give Xbox users the options that PC users have had for years.
Hopefully, this will be implemented as standard in the future.
I thought it was understood here in SW's that only cows have pc gaming rigs :) Wouldn't low memory computers and people haveing all of these applications running on their pc's affect the gameplay on their pc dedicated server for the game? Also I just see a new way to cheat for some people. I mean its bad enough sometimes on pc but now I guess 360 users will feel that wrath of these guys who will manipulate the server client lol.

Once again. Cows are on top form with manipulation of good news. You don't need a gaming PC. Most modern NORMAL PC's have more then enough RAM to run a decent enough server. Most Console users don't have the knowledge to manipulate servers to there advantage. Besides, it's an OPTION, you don't HAVE to use there dedicated servers.I thought it was understood here in SW's that only cows have pc gaming rigs :) Wouldn't low memory computers and people haveing all of these applications running on their pc's affect the gameplay on their pc dedicated server for the game? Yeah, having dedicated, developer sun servers and the ability for the community to host their own is so terrible.... What happens when dedicated hosted servers are shut off? This is one option to allow the community to keep going after the developer has moved on.I thought it was understood here in SW's that only cows have pc gaming rigs :) Wouldn't low memory computers and people haveing all of these applications running on their pc's affect the gameplay on their pc dedicated server for the game? [QUOTE="-Snooze-"][QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"]FTA: When playing on a dedicated server -- developer TimeGate will be hosting some as well, incidentally -- Section 8 will support multiplayer matches of up to 32 players. So not only is the company hosting its own servers, but its allowing those like me with decent PCs and a fast connection to establish our own hosts. I think this is the best of both worlds, and is bad why?SpruceCabooseCows will spin it! They're doing well today. Its not so much spin, its that no one is reading the article itself, but just taking the TCs word that he wrote down the important info, when its clear he did not. Give them some credit.
