Why would this be such a bad thing? I've seen people say Sony would never allow this, just like I guess Sony wouldn't allow MS or Nintendo to ever use DVD, Sony doesn't own BluRay solely. I guess some PS3 fanboys don't realize this fact. I wouldn't be suprised to see Microsoft or even Nintendo go BluRay next gen if it closes the deal on the format war this gen. By then I guess, BluRay players wil be a lot faster so it will be a lot better for gaming. Ya'lls thoughts?dotWithShoes
Well if sony owns the blu-ray tech then guess what? Sony will be making money off nintendo and MS because they will have to pay them for use of the tech. So that means increased revenue across the board.
Yeah! Sony doesn't like to make money! they only care about making there fanboys happy!Never will happen.

You didn't read what I said did you? Sony doesn't own Blu-Ray solely. Its a group of companies that control it, suprising to you I'm sure, the same company that produces the disc drives for Nintendo are a part of that group. I highly doubt Nintendo would have much issues with getting bluray. :)

I did read what you said... but sony will allow it because they will make a profit out of it. Also that's why I said IF sony owns it. I am agreeing with you basically, it will only make sony higher on the pedistal of pushing formats and influence in the industry. This is a good thing for them.
Sony does own bluray just like they own UMD and BetaMAx, it is there proprietary format.Lo_Rising
Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of companies representing consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion picture production. The standard is covered by several patents belonging to different companies. On Wikipedia
Never will happen.

i dont know why not. think about it, for every blu-ray disc sold on the 360 sony would get a slice of it.

Guess I'm the one in the wrong about not reading fully :) sorry, I'm reading like 3-4 differant forums at once.
Since there are more standalone blu ray players that isn't Sony branded, I wouldn't see why not have a blu ray add on for the 360. But I think there's just gotta have an overwhelming demand for it.
I don't see why it can't happen and it would actually make Sony more of a profit if it did. Just means a percentage of all the Blu-ray sells for the 360 go to Sony.Ibacai
Wouldnt that make Sony the winner of the concole wars? Xbox will cost more then $450 because of royalties.
If Blu-Ray wins, which it probably will, you can bet that you will see it in the next Xbox.Wasdie
I agree but I think that soon we may see solid state drives for games the cartage days are coming back! They just have to get the price down and it could replace everything.

Origins
Sony started two projects applying the new diodes: UDO (Ultra Density Optical) and DVR Blue (together with Pioneer), a format of rewritable discs which would eventually become Blu-ray Disc (more specifically, BD-RE).[7]The core technologies of the formats are essentially similar.
The first DVR Blue prototypes were unveiled at the CEATEC exhibition in October 2000.[8] Because the Blu-ray Disc standard places the data recording layer close to the surface of the disc, early discs were susceptible to contamination and scratches and had to be enclosed in plastic cartridges for protection. In February 2002, the project was officially announced as Blu-ray,[9] and the Blu-ray Disc Association was founded by the nine initial members.
The first consumer devices were in stores on April 10, 2003. This device was the Sony BDZ-S77; a BD-RE recorder that was only made available in Japan. The recommended price was US$3800.[10] However, there was no standard for pre-recorded video (BD-ROM) and no movies were released for this player. The Blu-ray Disc standard was still years away, since a new and secure DRM system was needed before Hollywood studios would accept it, not wanting to repeat the failure of the Content Scramble System for DVDs.
It is Sony's technology, plus Microsoft is still under contract with Toshiba, you just cant break a contract like that.

Blu-ray Disc was started by Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Thomson in February 19, 2002, with Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer, and Philips as the back-bone of the foundation. So they don't solely own the technology as all these companies have a stake on the disc format. I would definitely get my facts straight if I were you.

It's in plain writing in your post and you still can't see it. It was cooperation between Sony and Pioneer you really are ignorant aren't you.BD 'ownership' is no longer relevant.
Pandora's box has already been opened by licensing the technology to many multiple players.
At this point in time Sony and/or Sony & partners would lose a restriction of trade battle, so even if they wanted to do so they could not practically keep MS from having a BD add-on.
MS doesn't manufacture its own hardware. It would simply have an existing BD manufacturer produce 360 add-on BD drives according to MS' specification.
Sony et al could not stop that producer from supplying MS as long as the proper royalties are being paid.
More importantly, Sony would never consider attempting this restriction in the first place as they already share, cooperate and utilize MS technology in a number of their products.
Competition and cooperation among large sophisticated multinational companies is often complex and seemingly contradictory.
I don't need it, I already have a Blu-ray player and don't want another one until the next Xbox comes out. I'm kinda hoping the next Xbox gets the dual BD/ HD-DVD drive because it would be kind of cool to buy a pile of super cheap clearance HD-DVD's.
I'm not a big fan of owning movies but I would buy them if they are cheap enough.
Two things would play into 360 not having a BD drive:
1. MS's Pride. they dont want to support there rivals format.
2. They probaly dont care about HD Discs and want to focus more on Digital Ditribution.
every gen.... they use different formats. For example, PS1 CD.... PS2 DVD... PS3 Bluray... PS4 ?aka_aj03
Purpleray. Stingray. Ray Charles. Ray Romano. The possibilities are endless.
If sony were to for some reason say "Hey Microsoft, screw you, were not letting you use Bluray", which I don't think they can or would do.
Then couldn't Microsoft go like.. "Then we just won't but Bluray support in Windows.." which would actually be worse for bluray.
Anyhow.. I really don't think anything like that would happen. MS and Sony are actually partners in more areas then they compete.
right...right.........MS-the corperation that sided with hd to destroy bluray will now get much love from bluray. AND,AND sony- who backed bluray from day 1 will get the shaft from bluray which bluray would be NOWHERE WITHOUT SONY (FACT) ..................
I say to sony...LET MS INVEST HEAVILY IN A NEW FORMAT AND HOPE IT CATCHES AND REPLACES BLURAY.(WONT HAPPEN).
Other then movies is there a real reason to have blue ray? In all honesty I have yet to see a single game to need it.. Rarely is there even a game beyond 1 dvd, and there is no problem in my mind from switching dvds in mid game.. sSubZerOo
Well, pretty soon devs will be able to put more stuff in a game using Blu-Ray. Just look at Killzone 2, the devs said that one level in that game is like 5 gigs.

So they say.. Yet we have games like Crysis that arguably looks alot better depending on settings fitting on one dvd.. As I say again, is there yet a point to it?

Not that im saying KZ 2 eill look as good as crysis, but the game is still being made. You dont know how good or bad its going to look yet.
i dont get why all the console just dont use custom media for games, it would hinder alot of piracy...Haxxor117
It also raises costs.. Which is an ACTUAL loss, not some made up/guess work these piracy numbers give...
