Games FOr Windows LIVE is a bust. It has failed to catch on after three full rebrandings, Microsoft itself has given up on it and has completely embraced Steam. The PC market does not have as much scope for revenue for Microsoft as a fully closed ecosystem like the Xbox does. At the same time, the next Xbox needs to be at least competitive with the PS4. There is absolutely no chance Microsoft will have gimped the Xbox to compete on the power front via a PC storefront. At the same time, they will also not delay the next Xbox just to get into an e-peen measuring contest with Sony. The N64, PS2, and 360 eras all prove excess power means nothing if third parties develop for the lowest common denominator, and they will. The next Xbox will launch this year. It will launch this holiday. It will not be a machine you or I care about that much, no, that machine will be the PS4. However, the next Xbox will still break all manner of sales records.charizard1605
Ha, that's quite an interesting post.Â
I don't think they're doing anything right. Now, I'm not saying they'd gimp the box to fight the power front on PC, but, that's got to be the best place to play and win the power front? PC seldom (like, less than 1% of the time) loses the graphics war. For some people, that's a top priority. But I absolutely agree, graphics are not the key to winning the gen.Â
Games for Windows Live does not do well, that's right. I think it's main problem is it isn't respected by gamers due to teething issues. Ask an average person around here what they think of new Sim City and you'll probably get a regurgitation of first impressions (though I admit this is a bit of a generalisation). They've got to improve the system first, then get people to try it. How will they try it? It will need a killer app.Â
Now I'm not suggesting the next xbox is gimped on purpose in order to use GFWL, no sir. What I'm suggesting is that there is a power contest among gaming systems, and that PC easily wins. What about if next gen MS take a two pronged approach with their exclusives? Revenue scope is so dynamic. What about the effect of people buying a game on PC instead of a higher specced competitor of Next Xbox for teh graffix? Something I've been doing the past couple of years due to slouching console performance.Â
I guess what I'm saying is, the PC is an option for fighting the power front instead of a respec, or just flat out losing.Â
In all seriousness Charizard this is probably Microsoft's thinking - What's the cheapest decision we can make now which is likely to provide the most earnings over the next 5 to 10 years?
