"The single benefit Blu-ray provides to developers is its capacity. But once another generation rolls around, doesn't it stand to reason that producing DVDs will be even less expensive and that it may yield a more cost-effective approach than using Blu-ray anyway?
Beyond cost, what's so bad with DVD? The games look perfectly fine on the format, most developers haven't had too much trouble developing for DVDs, and even fewer have spent time complaining that it's not as capable as Blu-ray. In fact, I've heard more gripes from developers about Blu-ray than DVD lately.

But we also can't forget that gaming is moving in an entirely different. Over the next few generations, the need for media like DVD or Blu-ray will diminish and games will be purchased over the Web and downloaded to a hard drive on the console. It's already happening now in small amounts. But rest assured that as the industry realizes the benefit of sending games directly to you and Blu-ray loses its fight against streaming, you can bet that all this talk about formats will be just another stepping stone in the storied history of gaming."

honestly I think it would be dumb not to include blu ray. Since it already won. I want it to become the dominat format. I want a bluray burner so I can burn all my anime on one blu ray disk.

Kinda speculation on the writers behalf there.. I would be surprised if they didn't have BluRay in the next xbox. The whole "They wouldn't want to pay a competitor" thing is stupid, Sony Laptops don't have a problem running windows.

Agree, also seeing devs can basically do an infinite amount of things with it why not? i mean whatrs gonna happen to multiple disc games are they gonna have 2 or 3 more discs

I don't think MS will stick to DVD as there simply isn't enough space. Downloading games instead of having them on disc as the main focus will surely happen, but it still feels a lil' bit early for that I think.

This is a mute topic. We've been at this before.

Blu-ray= Massive space, HD, but slow as mud for games, and need an hd tv to get max output and no vga connection.

Digital dispersion= Space based on HDD,fast to play, but not everyone has a fast enough connection or a connection at all to use.

Can we say that they both will be used in the future and it up to the buyer which way they get it?

Its not hurting the 360 right now, what exactly is needed about it? It will just make the "720" more expensive, we see how well that turned out..

How could you actually argue against Blu Ray? It won the format war, that alone makes it's extremely welcome, not to mention devs sometimes throw in extra just because they have that extra space, with dvd's they'll cut back if it isn't enough to warrant a second dvd for example. It isn't exactly rocket science,

Blu Ray > DvD.

Edit: Did I mention the Blu Ray discs are WAY more reliable? Not even an xbox would scratch those babies.

They have a very clever anti pirate system too.

nothing wrong with multidisks however I don't believe the space has been used for teh PS3. Most of the time they are just putting the same code so that the game could be read faster. if the disk read speeds increase I see no reason not to use bluray. However I would like developers to actually take advantage of it, but I doubt it.

Blu Ray will be in all next generation consoles I think that is a given at this point. It would be suicide to not include it for next generation of HD gaming.

It would be stupid of them not to. I mean HD is getting much more popular (not to mention cheaper) and I'm sure lots of other people like myself would rather have an actual physical copy of something then buy it off the internet.

It only cost Sony $8 to put Blu Ray diodes in PS3. It really isn't a cost issue anymore. I am also sure that by the time next generation rolls around 6x Blu Ray drives will be the standard along with HDD so we are likely not to see any load times. Although some games like Uncharted already don't have load times.

I think that is a big mistake. Blu-ray is at least kinda of needed this gen and it will definitely be needed next gun if MS doesn't want to use 2 or 3 DVD's for many games. it's only downfall was that it read slowly. If MS could come out with a 10x blu-ray drive in the 720 then that would be epic. It would have read speeds near that of slower harddrives. If you think a console will go completely digital distribution before, 2015, you don't know your technology very well.

blu ray drives are getting cheaper all the time. and while it's true that digital distribution is the future, what about noobs/casuals? they don't know how to do that stuff. it scares them. there will always be a market for material versions of games.

Screw Blu-ray. You know what they should do? Continue with the "fully installable games" approach, but toss in a 1TB or 2TB HDD in every console. Standard spinning HDDs at that size will be very inexpensive by 2010. they can do it. space issue solved. developers can continue to use dirt-cheap DVDs...and gamers will just install the games to their computer, needing only the first disc for verification of ownership to run the game.

installed games will me much faster load times than any BD-based game can offer, along with all the benefits of nearly unlimited space for installs.

win.

I have said it ever since the Bluray vs HDDVD. These 2 formats are useless and as time goes by will become more and more useless. As everybody can already see, HDD are going to be the format to have your games on. PS3 and 360 both have game installs. So you will have the option of downloading your game or installing off a dvd(I would still prefer this one). Yes on dvds it will come on multiple disce but it wont matter when you install it to your HDD one time and one time only. Dvds are cheaper and games load faster off of HDDs. Also the Flash factor will come into play and has taken over burning to disc as a way of taking data with you. Expect both Sony and MS to soon allow you to use any HDD to install your games onto. I expect MS to have full 360 game download by the end of 2009 and hopefully they will allow the use of any HDD or at least certain HDDs with the appropriate specs. Disc era is ending and Flash is and will be the future.

1TB of HDD = $100 and I know you can find it for less.

64gb of flash = $115 prices are falling fast and will continue to drop faster and faster.

I hope they include one. If the 360 had a blu-ray player, I would have sadly sold my PS3 a while ago. I don't think that Sony and their PS3 (or PS4) are going to start buying up exclusive and fix their online to match 360 anytime soon. With a Blu-ray player included in the 360 or 720, it would be M$' one two punch. I use my PS3 more for multimedia stuff then I do gaming. And in that regard I love the system. But Imagine if this was combined with 360's gaming and far superior online? It would be the ultimate system. Some people may not like it. But Blu-ray has caught on quicker then DVD. Blu-ray is here to stay. It doesn't mean developers have to use a Blu-ray disc. They can still use a DVD. But having that option in M$ systems, along with everything else that makes it a great system would be unbeatable. Unless it's up against the Wii...

I expect systems to include larger HD's not disc size in the next gen. Why make your system more expensive with an blu ray drive when you can just unpack everything on a console i.e. PC?

bad move by MS. DVDs are nearly maxing out space on xbox games already. when the next gen system comes out, theyre going to need at least 3 disks for a single game. also, as the years go on, bluray movies will pick up speed, and many people will buy a console, just for the bluray player

You didn't think that through did you? Blu-ray would be better. The maxium read speed for DVD that exists so far is 22x. 8x blu-ray would smoke 22x DVD's maxium read speed and even though DVD would cost nothing by 2012, 8x blu-ray will be very cheap, too. Blu-ray would not only give you better load or install times but more space. Plus the cost of 1TB or 2TB of HDD would be near nothing by 2012 so the cost of it doesn't matter.

so youre going to install every one of your games? MS hasnt made any announcement about HDD space, so if thats your solution, you may end up buying a few of them. and more discs = higher price

for people saying Blu Ray as a whole is slow think about this A 6x blu ray drive is twice the speed of the 360s drive which means zero installs and zero pop ins and very quiet (due to low RPM) In fact i don't think theres a dvd drive on the market the can keep up with 6x blu ray

[QUOTE="too_much_eslim"]honestly I think it would be dumb not to include blu ray. Since it already won. I want it to become the dominat format. I want a bluray burner so I can burn all my anime on one blu ray disk.DivinitySkate
That's opinion. DVD sales still completely dominate blu-ray.

I dont understand why they just dont add more layers to a dvd or is 2 the max. I still think dvd quality is great and HD is not needed. At least in my opinion, I watch movies for the story more than anything, the picture just has to be understandable. Sound is more important since it adds more to the experience of the movie than an HD picture.

Screw Blu-ray. You know what they should do? Continue with the "fully installable games" approach, but toss in a 1TB or 2TB HDD in every console. Standard spinning HDDs at that size will be very inexpensive by 2010. they can do it. space issue solved. developers can continue to use dirt-cheap DVDs...and gamers will just install the games to their computer, needing only the first disc for verification of ownership to run the game.

installed games will me much faster load times than any BD-based game can offer, along with all the benefits of nearly unlimited space for installs.

win.

Uh if space isn't a factor then digital would own physical.

What about download speeds? The average american will have maybe a 0.75MB/s internet speed by 2012. Do you really want to make them download a 10GB+ file with that type of download speed?

[QUOTE="micky4889"]for people saying Blu Ray as a whole is slow think about this A 6x blu ray drive is twice the speed of the 360s drive which means zero installs and zero pop ins and very quiet (due to low RPM) In fact i don't think theres a dvd drive on the market the can keep up with 6x blu ray

Dude, Devil may cry, Mgs4, force installs. You can't say it not slower. I know it holds more, I know it has to be fast than dvd's to play blu-ray. It just that it's so much that it's still take a while to upload.

The TC needs to change the header to Xbox 720 speculated not to have Blu ray...In no way does the cnet article *which so happens to have shown quite a few times in the top right avertisng area for cnet sites* have any concrete memos, and or quotes by Microsoft, Microsoft Execs, PR, Or employee's saying that the next xbox will not have blu ray....Its all speculation on the part of the articles author, The TC needs to reflect it so we can stop geting replies of which a few so far of thats a big mistake on microsofts part...ect
