[QUOTE="micky4889"]for people saying Blu Ray as a whole is slow think about this A 6x blu ray drive is twice the speed of the 360s drive which means zero installs and zero pop ins and very quiet (due to low RPM) In fact i don't think theres a dvd drive on the market the can keep up with 6x blu raydreman999
Dude, Devil may cry, Mgs4, force installs. You can't say it not slower. I know it holds more, I know it has to be fast than dvd's to play blu-ray. It just that it's so much that it's still take a while to upload.

No your think of the PS3s drive which is only 2x blu ray

6x wasn't available at the time or else it was just too expensive for Sony to use

I think that person in the article made a big assumption without considering the possible context of next gen.

The average games that exceed 20 gb are RPG'S and Ps3 exclusives. ..........Correction....one ps3 exclusive.

so is dvd. I don't expect Nintedno to use blu ray next gen.

I believe they are using DVDs this gen, only the system does not play DVD formats. It uses the GOP formats to read it's data I believe. (Gamecube's format I believe)

Screw Blu-ray. You know what they should do? Continue with the "fully installable games" approach, but toss in a 1TB or 2TB HDD in every console. Standard spinning HDDs at that size will be very inexpensive by 2010. they can do it. space issue solved. developers can continue to use dirt-cheap DVDs...and gamers will just install the games to their computer, needing only the first disc for verification of ownership to run the game.

installed games will me much faster load times than any BD-based game can offer, along with all the benefits of nearly unlimited space for installs.

win.

Dreams-Visions

that sounds like a bad idea I am glad they won't do this next gen.

How could you actually argue against Blu Ray? It won the format war, that alone makes it's extremely welcome, not to mention devs sometimes throw in extra just because they have that extra space, with dvd's they'll cut back if it isn't enough to warrant a second dvd for example. It isn't exactly rocket science,

Blu Ray > DvD.

Edit: Did I mention the Blu Ray discs are WAY more reliable? Not even an xbox would scratch those babies.

They have a very clever anti pirate system too.

Eddie-Vedder

This system was cracked a long time ago. It is the copy protection of the PS3 itself that stands today. Blu-Ray movies are easily ripped, and if it weren't for a system used by the PS3, the same could be said for the games.

hmm... that's actually interesting. i would say that blu ray might be needed next gen, and that Direct Downloading will not be in wide use for a LOOONG time. consoles are all about plug n play. this gen consoles have moved closer to pc's, true, but in essence you can still put in a disc and play. direct downloading at today's broadband speeds would remove that.

To not use Blu Ray next gen would be a mistake... unless by next gen everyone has high speed internet, has totally moved on from physical media, and no one purchases movies and games from Wal-Marts.

I think MS was looking at buying Nintendo, but never did. I'm not crazy about the Wii and all, but can you imagine if there was no longer a Nintendo... rather, a Microtendo? That would blow.

Yea it would. And I think you're thinking of Nintendo, Sony's a very big company themselves so it's highly unlikely that Microsoft would buy them out :P

If MS is not keen on BR for whatever reason, they could always develop their own format, or even use HDDVD. On a proprietary system, HDDVD would work just fine, and the manufacturing process is supposed to be easier than BR, so who knows...

*shrugs shoulders - goes back to enjoying games for consoles that have been announced, released, and purchased for some time.* We're not really all that close to any type of official announcement on what system will have what. Time for this thread to take a cold shower.

The only reason they don't want Blu-Ray in their next system is because Sony would profit off of each game they sold. All this, "Blu-Ray sucks lol" is just PR bullcrap to make it seem like they didn't want it anyways. Looks like Microsoft is still vying to hold back the gaming industry.

honestly I think it would be dumb not to include blu ray. Since it already won. I want it to become the dominat format. I want a bluray burner so I can burn all my anime on one blu ray disk.too_much_eslim

It's not won though, DVD has won. DVD is still dominate, Blu-Ray is still falling behind and you said it yourself you want it to become the dominate format, all the while Microsoft and all these movie studios release things on DVD it'll never go away.

were you not around during the transition to dvds? the exact same thing is happening. it takes time. in the beggining of the transition, they release movies for both, then they will slowly ease off of dvds untill they stop releasing anything on it. this is how it works, dvd is dying. the majority of people will have bluray players within a few years

I've said this before, the Xbox 720 is still on paper development, they haven't decided upon Blu-Ray, DVD or something else like HD-DVD as a cheap alternative to licesnsing and using Blu-Ray or some other proprietary disc drive.

And Microsoft never ever said they wouldn't put out a Blu-Ray add on drive for the 360 in the future.

Agree, also seeing devs can basically do an infinite amount of things with it why not? i mean whatrs gonna happen to multiple disc games are they gonna have 2 or 3 more discs

Why not? They still hock 2 disc editions of blu ray movies when we all know the content will fit on 1 disc.

Blu-Ray is a gimic and is not really needed at all, in my opinion. You could easily fit mostly all ps3 games onto a standered DVD rather then a Blu-Ray; and thats discounting MGS4 which is just ridculously huge, but they could have easily have put that game on several DVDs. It makes no diffrence in the games graphics or running speed. IMO sony probably just threw it in the last minute because they figured they would be able to sell the console for a more expensive price so people would think its more powerfull and impressive then the 360 which is being sold at a cheaper price....ONLY because it doesnt have a Blu-Ray, otherwise it would probably be the same price as a ps3, would it not? In conclusion.. do i think blu-ray is a gimic by sony to suck people in to buying a ps3?..yes.... but its also a smart tactic because the cheapest blu-ray player you can buy is just as much or even more expensive then a ps3. So they figure that if people just want a blu-ray player they'll proably end up getting a ps3 anyway because its cheap compared to other blu-ray players and includes a great video game console..and even if you dont play video games you cant say it wouldnt come in handy some times.

But these new features will require the purchase of a new player. Existing players obviously wouldn't be able to handle such things. So if you're going to buy a new player, why bother buying one that handles only 480i? Why not buy a Blu-ray machine that can still do all those things they're talking about, and 1080p? Upscaling players are getting better all the time, there's no question. On really well-mastered DVDs, the resultant image with my gear looks breathtaking. But can an upscaled image ever look truly better than an HD one? I think not. DVD 2.0 will require new DVDs and new players to take advantage of all those wonderful new things. But we already have those wonderful thing with Blu-ray. And it's 1080p with better audio. So why bother? (takien from a comment on that article and it pretty much sums up what i was about to write)

pretty dumb not to include blu-ray. in 3-4 years it will become the main format as more people get HDTVs. when do you think MS is going to roll out the new Xbox? 2011, 2012? yeah pretty dumb move. On another note, everything that is new is ALWAYS expensive. When DVD came out it was expensive. you can get a dvd player for $50 now. So as more people get PS3 and other blu-ray players the price will go down. So by the time to next Xbox rolls out putting a blu-ray player in it really wont be that expensive.

Do you really want this?

Agree, also seeing devs can basically do an infinite amount of things with it why not? i mean whatrs gonna happen to multiple disc games are they gonna have 2 or 3 more discs

Why not? They still hock 2 disc editions of blu ray movies when we all know the content will fit on 1 disc.

I think one is a digital copy, for your iPod and PSP etc.

lol, people, there are OTHER high capacity disc formats out there that MS could use for more space lol, it doesnt HAVE to be blu-ray

DVD 2.0

VMD

Both of these formats hold 24GB of data and is compatible with current DVD's

Well only VMD will require a new player, DVD2 doesnt, but anyway we were talking about the NEXT xbox so thats irrelevant, but if MS is moving for DD for movies, then why would they support bluray. i mean i know they get a fee from every bluray sold because bluray uses MS's VC-1 technology, but why would they do that when they have always said DD is the future, i mean if what you say is true, then why not adopt an add on player now?? i think they are looking to move away from that, and more to DD, so either they will come up with their own format, or use one of these, but the movie side of it will still be DVD's and downloads

There's really little reason for games to come on physical media at all. The future is digital.subrosian

Yes 20 to 30 years from now. As long as broadband is not free and everyone doesn't have a computer their will always be disc based media.

I will never buy downloadable games that are 10+ gb because if they are terrible I have no way of selling it.

Blu Ray will be in all next generation consoles I think that is a given at this point. It would be suicide to not include it for next generation of HD gaming.jakarai
excaly, blu-ray won the hd dvd vs bluray. i think it is a bit early for direct download as some people still have slow internet and don't have internet. i have a slow internet DSL, it takes me about a day + to download anything off of steam. if it is in HD it will take even longer to download it.

i see next gen consoles having blu ray in it.

I hate the ideal of streaming games. I think most people are like me and want something real in their hands. If you stream a game you can not sell it later. If it gets deleted you have to download it again (that is if the company you bought it from lets you). Even though hard drives are getting bigger so are the games, which means huge hard drives which are mechanical and fail. You loss a hard drive you loss all your games. You loss a blu-ray disc you lose only one game. Streaming is a bad idea in so many ways!!

Bluray isnt nessessary....But by the time the "720" comes out they will get more space out of duallayer...PLUS no matter what you read. I dont care if Bill Gates writes it himself...NOBODY knows what the 720 will have...NOBODY. So lets not worry with it for another 2 years..
