[QUOTE="MBirdy88"][QUOTE="musicalmac"] It would usher in a brand new era on SW, a delicious one. Boy that would be special.DarkLink77
Shame it's not going to happen given Apple are not market leaders in anything anymore.

Not even in phones or tablets? Really? I don't follow that sh!t, but I find that kind of hard to believe.

Android is beating iOS heavily (though they are still doing good no doubt), Tablets yes, I was exagurating alittle.

But the latest nexus range is proving that the gap even in that department is closing, sales wise it will take ages.

And then you have the budding hybrid-market which will even though its shakey now make the tablet market a little novelty. something that apple isn't even dealing with.

MAC OS X's marketshare is a joke just like Windows Phone.

Android has passed iOS in the most used phone OS.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Apple still be the market leader if the iPhone version whatever has sold more than the best-selling specific line of Android phone made by a specific company?

Apple certainly has the cash. Do they want to burn through a whole lot of it and risk little to no return on investment to start with? Would the board and shareholders like that? Certainly interesting to think how Apple would approach the category. Heil68
you're missing the point. Apple doesn't need to make a console. All they need to do is steer the direction of their current products. AppleTV has the potential to do to the console market what smartphones are doing to handheld gaming. They won't capture the hard core video market but they can steal the casuals, which will destroy the market viability of those consoles by turning them into niche products.

Careful what metric you're using to define anything. Pure market share is a pointless number when Apple's ~20-25% of the world's smartphone market share netted them ~70% of last year's smartphone profits. One statistic seems worth bragging about while the other statistic is fundamentally significant.

I'd also hesitate to assume what Apple may or may not do regarding video games, especially when you're assuming they'd invest gobs of cash into a shrinking industry. We should also make sure to remember how solid the financial ground underneath Apple is, prepare for fun facts.

Apple could buy:
- Facebook
- Groupon
- Linkdin
- Netflix
- Pandora
- Blackberry
- Yahoo!
- Yelp
- Zillow
- Zynga

- ...and still have billions in the bank

Or, Apple could just buy the PC industry by purchasing:
- HP
- Dell
- Toshiba
- Sony
- Lenovo
- Asustech
- Acer
- ...aaand still have enough to pick up:
- Nokia
- Blackberry
- ...and still have billions in the bank.

So get used to Apple, my warrior friends, they're going to be around for a while. lol

Didn't Samsung just announce that all the Galaxy S series phones had just recently surpassed 100,000,000 total shipments (because Apple is the only company that reports sales whereas everyone else reports shipments). Someone care to peek at how many iPhones Apple sold in the holiday quarter 2012 alone?...

Yea, but imagine if Apple let other manufacturers use iOS, it's not a fair comparison. That's why I like Android, I'm not stuck with one stupid hardware option; same goes for WP8

If he's referring to them releasing a console with dedicated games etc, then that would be interesting. However, if he's talking releasing a console with the current slew of iOS games, then  When will people realize that there's more to gaming than casual gaming.

Apple isnt a bunch of kids who would buy strugling companies just to have bragging rights on SW.

1. They answer to share holders who would have to agree to buy said assets

2. The assest they would try to aquire would have share holders that would need to agree to the acquisition.

Nothing about the industry in the past or present leads me to believe that most of those companies would sell to Apple. Nor would Apple share holders want to pay for most of them.

The truth is that recent sales of "i" products (while good) is not where it used to be.

I think you missed the point. It's not that Apple is going to go out and buy those, or would ever want to buy all those companies. The point is that Apple has the liquid assets to do so, something no other company can say. Apple is in a league of their own.

And iDevice sales are still pretty outrageous, I'm not sure why you think they're not what they "used to be," whatever that means...

That's always the case. They do the same with Microsoft. That's why Microsoft gave them a huge dividend a few years ago, totaling somewhere in the mid 30 billion.

I don't think Microsoft would be affected all too much. They disrupted much of the trends of "traditional" console gaming when they introduced Live which brought about all the social networking, streaming, services, and online functionality that we all take for granted today. It really did set the pace for a lot of how we distribute games in today's world, and connect with each other, and Sony, Nintendo, and even Valve took notes on it. They've been very progressive with their hardware/software, and have rarely waited for one of the other two big companies to "do it first".

I think there is definitely the possibility of Apple disrupting the console market by creating a product that functions just like a smartphone, and shares the same style of functionality and distribution, but I don't think it'd kill the other consoles (and of course I think Microsoft would be in the best position if that were to happen).

I think as long as we all live there will always be a market for the kinds of games we enjoy, and there will always be developers who enjoy making those games, and won't sell out for a quick buck. There are devs on the PC who make nothing, but games that only sell in the tens of thousands, but they choose to not use their talents to make something more appealing because they love to appeal to that tiny market.

Teh Apple of Doom...

I think he's giving them a little too much credit.

They already did tap the console market and their Pippin was a miserable flop (only good game on that system was Super Marathon, the prequel to Halo) and not even rabid Apple fanboys would be buying a Wii knock off just because it would have the Apple logo on it.

Now seeing Samsung joining the fun would be quite interesting altho I think we don't need any more systems on the market as even some existing ones already struggle. (e.g. Vita, WiiU)

Do not want. Apple products are overpriced simply because they have an apple logo. High end android costs less than iphone yet does much more.

RR360DD

Android phones are pathetic. I'd rather go blackberry than touch another android. And I can't see apple going for the hardcore games market, but they could certainly prevent Sony / MS / Ninty getting the casuals.

If you want to continue using that inferior, unstable overglorified app launcher, go right ahead.

* http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomiogeron/2012/02/02/does-ios-crash-more-than-android-a-data-dive/

"The largest proportion of app crashes from both iOS and Android platforms were on iOS 5.01 with 28.64% of overall crashes (in a normalized data set). That makes sense since iOS 5 was still relatively new at that time and many apps still need to work out the kinks with the new OS. But there are also older iOS versions that have a significant proportion of app crashes. For example, iOS 4.2.10 had 12.64% of app crashes, iOS 4.3.3 had 10.66% and iOS 4.1 had 8.24%. "

"It was not immediately clear whether the iPhone's locking system is as powerful as its Android counterpart. But the iPhone's passcode has been defeated with simple hacks, the latest of which was revealed in October 2010."

The only people who buy Apple products are girls (both attractive and unattractive) and effeminate males who watch anime.

All the cool kids buy Apple products.

I'd buy an Apple Mac laptop or "Macbook" but I don't go out to drink coffee.

I've never met an apple user call someone a dbag over their choice of computers/software... wish I could say the same for the windows 1337 group.

So he has an opinion, good for him. Here is mine. Apple charges way too much for their products to kill off the big three.

LOL... Indeed. I don't mind the girls. They know they're buying an inferior machine because they can't comprehend something as 'complex' (lol) as the PC, but the guys always seem to have a chip on their shoulders. They claim that windows is too hard to use (Which is a blatant admission that their IQ is pobably lower than 70) and brag about how none of them can understand how to use a PC. Do you know anyone else in the world who brags about being stupid?
