The PS3 was made fun of for being media heavy system and a bluray player at the start of the PS3 life when it never had very many games out.

I wouldn't use Facebook or twitter but there is not problem adding more fetures to a console when it has large selection of games you can play.

campbell1874

It doesnt make it any more justified, even before the PS3 launched all I heard was people buy consoles for gaming and dont want a media player so the PS3 wouldn't play a role in the format war of HDDVD vs. Blu ray. That was proven wrong, so the next excuse was that people ONLY buy a PS3 because it's a media player and gamers buy 360s. Now everyone is giddy because you can rent movies, twitter and facebook on your 360???! Are you serious. My point was the PS3 always had games, maybe not a ton of AAA exclusive games off the bat but they had plenty of AAE's and multiplats. And AAE and multiplats apparantly are plenty enough to tide MS fanboys over since 08 while they rode most of the year without a AAA game. No console starts off with a ton of games but as we know now the PS3 caught up mighty fast,.

So XBL is trying to catch up to features that PS3 had all along. I think I've seen that before.

And PS3 is getting vidzone next week, that's better than any feature you mentioned.

I just looked up Vidzone and apparently they offer music videos for free, while MS charges 2.25 for one

Twitter and Facebook is amusing. I've been able to use those on PS3 [If I cared to] since day 1. That free web browser, which is no Firefox/Chrome, is still a nifty little feature, then enables a wide variety of features that XBL doesn't have. It's free too.

Yep, better exclusives, and in an attempt to one up the PS1 and PS2, terrible reliability. Sony thought they heald the least reliable console crown last gen, and the gen before, but MS stole that too :)

Facebook will be different from the vanilla facebook. Intergrated with Xbox Live, with features relavent to the Xbox experiance. My PS3 can't do that ... I wonder if yours can?

This is the kind of attitude MS wants from us 360 owners, PAYING EXTRA for a service being offered for free on other systems and defend that by saying it is superior..

I personally pay for XBL, i have no 'problem' with that but I am not getting anything more/superior from what is offered by PC & PS3 for free..

No, it really didn't. It has a browser which allows you to use the normy PC versions of those services via your PS3, though even then Facebook has some issues if you're using any part of it which uses flash or java. These are apps tailored to the 360, not just a browser showing facebook.com. They integrate your friends list, your avatars, and are made to be navigated with a game controller.

The funny part is, XBL is free for PC users. They tried charging 50 bucks for peer to peer matchmaking on the PC, and it ended in epic failure.

[QUOTE="Bluray001"] Sure, 8mbps for a highly compressed 1080p video and lossy audio.... I wonder what you would need for a blu-ray quality 1080p movieBluray001

Here's the thing: all HD video is compressed. Yes, even Blu-ray. The technology to deliver uncompressed 1080p video simply isn't available at this time. Lossless audio, yes. Uncompressed, lossless 1080p video, no.

Given the right compression, 8Mbps is more than enough to deliver a great 1080p video stream with 5.1 audio, which is what Microsoft is promising. It won't be as good as Blu-ray, but it will be quite acceptable. It will look as good as theHD signal delivered on FiOS, for example.

Well, technically uncompressed video isn't 1080p. It's the video resolution of a movie theater screen. (The Studio Master). It's not practical to have that on a disc since the home theater doesn't have screens that size. The compression on a 1080p movie on a blu-ray disc is optimized for that resolution so that for the screen you are using, it will look identical to the studio master on a movie theater screen. 5.1 audio isnt enough IMO. For me, nothing short of Multichannel LPCM, Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD MA is acceptable

And I suppose you have the equipment and the environment to experience MLPCM 7.1 channel audio properly, hmm? Because if you do, you are one of the few.

For the vast majority of people, Dolby Digital AC3-encoded 5.1 audio is more than enough to provide a fantastic experience.

No, funny how cows make things up like this everytime XBL continues to excel over the free mess known as PSN. At least you still have that joke known as HOME...

CreepyBacon

You people really have short memories dont you? All lemmings did was bash the PS3 when it had no games and all it was good for was media, now you prsise the 360 for getting media features when if the PS3 had received them you wouldve gone back to the old "people buy consoles for games" argument.

Im sure the fact the 360 is getting all this content without having to pay the price of a PS3 and getting a useless blu-ray drive isn't in anyway shape or form the reason why there happy. :|

Once again Microsoft leads and Sony follows. Yes sony has a browser, it's rubbish to use. Console browsers do not work. I'd rather have big sites integrated into my console with features designed specificly FOR my console.

Microsoft has one upped Sony on movies, once again. Now not only do they play instantly, you can share with friends and family as well. Enjoy home, the most you can do is watch adverts together.

Sky deal anyone? You do realize how big Football is in Europe right? It's not the most popular sport in the world for nothing you know and now you can get football games, Live on your 360, as well as Sky movies. Sony releases software to allow the PS3 to play freeview tv channels (a free digital tv service in the UK, rather rubbish.) Microsoft brings in the countries biggest Digital tv service.

One upped again.

Anything sony does, Microsoft does better. Everytime. That's why it's getting hype. It's not some tacked on, money grabbing (in blu-rays case) scheme to make the console seem better than it is.

But Twitter/Facebook works on PS3's browser. While you can watch movies with friends over XBL, you can watch Blu-Ray with your family in the same room :| . Knowing MS, they will be a twist to this feature. Does each friend have to purchase the movie or what?

So...where are the GAMES on xbox live that feature 60 + players or more online like R2 (w/no lag)and MAG? What about the games where you create and share content like online LBP and Mod-Nation? Ya know "games", the things that we were supposed to be hyping online services to begin with?

what you're talking aboutare"features"of the online service outside of the games...when it comes to the ONLINE GAMING EXPERIENCE of the actual games that the two systems have avalible, xbox360 fails horribley when compaired to PS3...what exactly is this"superior console online gameing experience" that you are talking about?

It'll be different, as in, more streamlined. It won't be superior, in fact, it'll be watered down in one way of thinking. The point is, whether you'd like to admit it or not, PS3 has been able to do the exact same thing, albeit, in a different, more traditional manner, since day 1.

Re the bold part in your previous post, NO you play on XBL but maybe (just maybe) had the chance to play a few minutes on a friend's PS3.. if you do own a PS3 however add me up and we can play on a few games together like

Resistance 2 (60 player online)

KZ2 (32 players online in amazing visuals)

LBP (create a level or jump on user created ones on the fly and co-op)

Warhawk (32 players online with massive maps)

while playing you can tell me what is so inferior on PSN... Deal ????

Now they are going gaga for these abilities that Sony fans could have done since day 1. Is today opposite day?

That's fantastic for you. Now if you could only get everyone else to upgrade their equipment and environment to be 7.1 lossless ready, then we can get somewhere.

Look, no-one is saying 1080p streaming is as good as Blu-ray. But there seems to be this prevailing attitude (especially among PlayStation adherents) that if it's not Blu-ray, it must stink. That's simply not true. 1080p streaming will provide a great movie-watching experience. Heck, 720p downloads on Xbox Live already provide really good quality.

Tulak_Hord

Because MS also makes windows......and have you used the PS3 browser? It can hardly run two windows at once.

That's two more than the 360 can.

Seems to me all of Sony's efforts with regard to PSN are going into adding more stuff for you to buy in PlayStation Home. On the Xbox Live side, we're seeing programmed content in the form of Xbox Live Primetime finally launching, 1080p movie and TV streaming, social networking withlast.fm, Twitter and Facebook, live TV with Sky Player in the UK (and rumors of Hulu in the US), Video Party (MST3k-style) and Games On Demand, cutting out the hated GameStop. People complain about multiple discs for Forza 3, ME2 and so on, but why does it matter when one can just download those gameslike on Steam?

Meanwhile on the PSN side, you've got picture sharing in Home (which you have to purchase virtual picture frames in order to use) and not much else. And PSN was lagging behind Xbox Live as it was.

You truly do get what you pay for with Xbox Live. It's rapidly getting to the point where an Xbox 360 with Xbox Live is the one box that will serve all of your entertainment needs.

Good, maybe it's worth paying for now.

[QUOTE="Bluray001"][QUOTE="UnnDunn"]And I suppose you have the equipment and the environment to experience MLPCM 7.1 channel audio properly, hmm? Because if you do, you are one of the few.

For the vast majority of people, Dolby Digital AC3-encoded 5.1 audio is more than enough to provide a fantastic experience.

Well, yes. My sound space has been properly configured for lossless audio.

Not good enough.

No lag thingy as you say may be a myth, i can agree, so why pay extra for a non Lag Free service ??

the psn still dominates because for you to download a 4 gig demo it takes all night, and it take me 20 mins. the ps3 runs lua code, that stuff is EXTREMELY compact, so about 3/4 of "downloading" is really unpacking. which is a hell of a lot faster than downloading barely compressed stuff.

It will be very funny to see what "buffering times" will be like when they try to stream 1080p movies. :D For every second of movie, you get 3 minutes of buffering. :D

The prevailing attitude is that MS fans are jumping on every longshot new tech that's not Blu ray. As I said before streaming movies and such have a VERY limited selection. Your not gonna have every new, current movie available to you to stream. I can watch pretty much any new and many old released movies on Blu ray and not worry about my internet connection. Just like you said if everyone could upgrade their equipment, well ALOT of people have to upgrade their internet speed to enjoy a none buffering 1080p movie. When the best solution is a Blu ray player and Blu rays either netflixed or purchased. Bragging to people who can watch a WIDE selection of top quality HD movies about a streaming service is not gonna get the jealous reaction you want.

History is not with you, I'm afraid. Sony has tried this before with audio; they put out the SACD format with super-high-quality lossless audio that you needed to buy a new player and new discs for. And then iTunes came along and everyone switched to downloading relatively low-quality MP3s. Why? Convenience.

The same thing is happening with Blu-ray.

Paying 50$ to use Twitter and Facebook.

This is what gaming is all about folks.

STRETCH-E
he put tons of things in his post, and you just keep going on about facebook and twitter, you are starting to sound like a scratched record, by the way hows the cross party chat going on ps3, oh yeah it isn't, same as a lot of things LIVE offers that PSN doesn't, you can have resident evil and ff7, you can buy ff7 for the PC, i know i have a copy, we get perfect dark and probably goldeneye, i know which games i would rather have, face it PSN is the same as everything else thats free, substandard compared to the stuff you pay for.

Sony will still continue to upgrade the PSN, the same way they are upgrading Home. The two co-exist ya know, the development of the PSN and Home has co-existed since the PS3 launched.

a web browser opens the gate to viruses, all it takes is for someone to code a ps3 specific worm and BAM like that your console is dead, MS didn't put a browser on the 360 for a good reason.
