I knew they were going to do this. They let you do it on 360 although limited.

...the people at Microsoft have now stated that the cloud essentially gives you an "unlimited sized" hard drive, allowing players to save unlimited game data via the service.

Now I may not buy that external hard drive after all

__

Apparently its not restricted to XBL Gold either

According to Microsoft's public relation's, the Xbox One will offer this service for all Xbox Live members, negating the necessity of an Xbox Live Gold account to utilize the servie as it stands currently.

Xbox Live offers Xbox One unlimited storage space in the cloud for all Xbox Live members to store numerous types of Xbox Live content, including your profile, games, Achievements and entertainment. This content is stored and saved in the cloud so you can automatically access it anywhere, anytime, no matter where you are.

So why not offer a second model with less storage and for less money? Like 250GB (or even less) for $399, and advertise right on the box "unlimited hard drive space." No...bad idea.

Pretty much this. Using the cloud for saves is fine. However I fail to see how this wouldn't bring up the sort of issues services like Onlive had if you used the cloud for streaming of games or something.

No, but I updated my post with something more simple. If you're referring to another model: no I'm not trolling, if there is "unlimited" space for gold users, why is it unreasonable to ask for a cheaper model with a reduced physical harddrive? If you're referring to my idea of a bundle with 12 months of gold: yeah, it made more sense in my head and sounds dumb (but not trolling).

they will hopefully, but lets not compare the two when it comes to these things.    The cloud, operating systems, and innovation.     Sony will have to copy probably since PSN is such a shitty service compared to live, so win for all because Microsoft is stepping it up.

Sounds to me its more about saving Game save data and not actually having a 15GB game saved up on the cloud, currently Sony does that and been doing it for few years via PS+ as you can upload game saves into the cloud without having to worry about losing them on the HDD.

PS4 $399 with 500 removable HDD ( that can be upgraded easily to a cheap 1TB HDD) >>> XboxOne $499 with un-removable HDD's

Cloud saving is awesome, but this won't alleviate the 500gb HD for installs -- but 500 gb is still a large amount that won't fill quickly.

Save data, eh? Cool, but that isn't really the huge concern. I'm not sure if you still have to install all disk based games, or if it's an option now, but even then...just with Arcade games, a 500GB hard drive can fill up fast.

Saving data to the cloud was available on the 360 and PS3 - though this is largely about how the storage limit has moved up from 512MB on the 360 to "unlimited sized" on the Xbox One.

Unlimited game data can be stored to the cloud.

Finally something that actually makes for an interesting value proposition, although I'm not sold on the whole online storage thing in general.

What is the catch though? I could see them doing something similar to me.ga where they only keep one copy of the file and just store pointers to that copy, otherwise you start chewing up a ton of space very quickly if they don't pretty severely limit the kind of stuff that you can save. Enterprise HDDs aren't at all cheap either, so they have to be conserving space somehow here if they're actually letting you store "entertainment" defined as audio and video files.

"unlimited" "game data" - though some people here feel the need to debate semantics.

Save files on the cloud? Rly? YOu mean that thing I can do on MY PHONE! Wow... XBOTS really get excited over the simplest things. LOL at people that think they'll store your actual GAME or DLC on the cloud.... and double LOL at people who think that even if that was what they think it is, that it'd be a good thing.

You wouldn't save your game installs on the cloud, which is what would be a real difference maker. A save file or settings file is rather small -- it would take years to fill up 1 gb with those alone. Install files are what take up the space and you'd never want those on the cloud.

This is why I'm wondering how they're doing this. I mean to a certain extent people will only use so much and storage space is relatively cheap (even with enterprise HDDs), plus theres the possibility they've just overbuilt Azure and have a lot of extra resources available..so maybe I'm just nuts.

I'd still like to know more details though, for my own curiosity if nothing else.

Remember the idea of logging into your friends Xbox One and accessing your games library. This stuff was built into the Xbox One from the beginning. So I think it applies to full games. Of course I could be wrong.

It obviously means that they will save a record of what games you've bought. There's literally ZERO reason to save a bunch of different identical data for games onto this save storage when they would just be saving what you'd already download from their servers for digital downloads.

So why not offer a second model with less storage and for less money? Like 250GB (or even less) for $399, and advertise right on the box "unlimited hard drive space." No...bad idea.

-Karmum-

They wouldn't really save a lot by adding a smaller hard drive. The current 500gb drive in the Xbox one doesn't cost more than around $50. So even if they cut that down to half or less they wouldn't be able to shave more than 10-20 off the price. And the main reason you need a HD in the new consoles is not to store save games but to support the mandatory installation.

This is not really anything special or anything new.

Sounds to me its more about saving Game save data and not actually having a 15GB game saved up on the cloud

Xbox Live offers Xbox One unlimited storage space in the cloud for all Xbox Live members to store numerous types of Xbox Live content, including your profile, games, Achievements and entertainment. This content is stored and saved in the cloud so you can automatically access it anywhere, anytime, no matter where you are

i highly doubt they will save full games to the cloud, more so probably a small portion of a game or some kind of thing where it authenticates you have the game and you go from there regardless.. this is pretty cool from M$oft

It obviously means that they will save a record of what games you've bought. There's literally ZERO reason to save a bunch of different identical data for games onto this save storage when they would just be saving what you'd already download from their servers for digital downloads.

this

and ps4 already has this feature where you can play your games anywhere on any ps4 even if you dont have the disc
