Damn, those are some bold words. But he might just be saying that because of the fatigue of the modern trend (which Gears happily embraces in its limited weapons, health regeneration and focus on cover based combat in gritty settings). Both are great games though and really shouldn't be compared, but Yahtzee does like to make people mad for the fun of it, so I'm not too surprised.

Can I expect another mailbag showdown from the Gears fanboys who don't know what an opinion is?

It should probably be noted that yahtzee never plays multiplayer.

This is also kind of a big one. Gears is meant more for the co-op and multiplayer aspect, and while R1 and R2 had better online than the first 2 Gears games, here it seems the opposite. Plus when played solo, I'd imagine Gears wouldn't be nearly as fun as it would be with 3 buddies (where R3 only gets you 1 buddy who isn't even written into the story).

Considering how close the scores are for both games though (a 7 difference on metacritic), no one is really wrong. Both are great in different ways, and for very different tastes.

I liked the Gears story and while I AGREE a lot of the story was forgettable, the gameplay is fun as hell. Obviously it's not going to appeal to everybody and I can see where Yahtzee is coming from (steroids, generic characters, story being jumbled and forgettable) it really overall didn't do the story all that badly when compared to many other shooters. The games had variety, great visuals, fun level design, interesting environments and the ability to co-op with friends.

You're either going to enjoy the gameplay or you're going to hate the gameplay. The game sold and reviewed well for a reason and he's in the minority for disliking the game and claiming resistance over it and that's cool, it's his opinion right but it doesn't make it "fact" Fact is when you look at the average critic and user scores along with sales because those are what ultimately determines if a game is good or not.

For instance I might dislike Modern warefare 2 but I'd admit that it's a good game overall, just not to my taste. Gears of war 3 had a average length campaign, a interesting story for those who enjoyed the story (which were probably quite a few if you look at book sales) and tons of value within the multiplayer modes. Gears 3 is the better game overall TO most people, that being said some people might find Resistance 3 better.

I'm open to disagreement with what I've all said though.

I agree with him, people just buying into the hype. I did for all 3 of them.

Just look at the number drop in people playing online since it came out, Cliff says it defines with Xbox like Halo but yet Halo has waaay more people playing a year later then Gears does a week after it came out. If you like the game then good for you....it's just over hyped.

Yeah I've finally gotten around to investing a bit of time in the game and decided to not bother buying it. To put it simply, it is the SAME $h** over and over again. The 9.5 review made me turn my head and go, "wow, it must be good." Turns out it is just an average shooter. I'm really surprised that the controls weren't made a tad more intuitive.

I do want to point out how interesting it is that the multiplayer was the best part of Resistance 2 and miles ahead of Gears 2's multiplayer (though not as good in the single player for that time with R2's ploddy pacing and modern mechanics). Now the roles are reversed and R3 put much more work in the campaign, with Gears putting much more work in the MP.

At least, I think its interesting.

Resistance 3 must be the biggest improvement on a series ever seen if it's better than Gears 3. But I'm not stupid and know that that opinion is only held by a small minority.

Hmm, I do not if you can draw a direct comparison between the two franchises. They have distinctly different ways in delivering their game experience so I do not see many areas that you can compare 1 to 1 between the two games. I will say I find the Resistance series more immersive than Gears, but Gears combat and AI seems smoother.

On a side note, I was horribly disappointed in R2, the controls and interfacing was all out of whack. R3 seems vastly improved.

True, though Gears of war 1 MP was fun. Resistance 1 from what I remember, was smoother.

Other wise it'd just come down to preference.

Gears as a series crushes Resistance. But people... DO NOT sleep on Resistance 3. Its soooo good! The single player is very unique thanks to the great level design and weapons. I'm enjoying it more than Gears 3 campaign. I just laugh at the Gears 3 campaign. It's so fun and funny, like watching an awesomely bad Arnie, Steven Seagal, and Van Damme action movie wrapped in one.

Gears 3's campaign is a JOKE though. I don't understand why it was lauded as emotional or having a good story. But when it comes to multiplayer, co-op and shooting s***? The game rules in those categories.

I probably won't have time to sit down and play through the campaign. Got a busy semester and a lot of other games lined up in queue. But I always thought the Gears series was more about eye candy graphics and Michael Bay-like scenes of war. And just like a Michael Bay film, nobody really cares what is going on in the plot as long as they don't have to go more than 5 minutes until the next explosion.

Both are forgettable but gears is definitely the more forgettable one.

Give it a few weeks for the hype to die down and you will see more and more people calling Gears 3 overrated. Happens to all the flavor of the month games. Resistance 3 will just flat out be referred to as garbage by most people here, just like it's predecessors, all because they didn't sell millions on top of millionsof copies.

'Cept for Kevin Vanord. That guy's taste in games is so similar to mine that it's almost creepy. His personal GOTY for the last three years are the exact same as mine :lol: (Vanquish, Demon's Souls, MGS4).

I havent played Resistance 3 yet but really doubt about that. Gears 3 is simply one of the best games i played this gen.

Yeah, most people get the notion Gears of war 3 has bad story telling just from there previous games. It was actually well written this time. Giving life to Marcus, Dom, Baird and Cole making them 3 dimensional.
