With all these housewives and old folks raving about the Wii, hardcore gamers feel left out. Let's face it: mini-games are really cool if you are used to Mine Sweeper and Solitaire. But Nintendo's not trying to push players away! Just listen to Zelda director Eiji Aonuma explain how Nintendo can expand the audience and not alienate fans:

It's because of gamers that games have come as far as they have... it's not Nintendo's intent to alienate those people... We think we can involve everyone - people who played games in the past because the approach is so new, and people who were never gamers.

Words of comfort to hold gamers over as they play Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario and the GameCube's back catalogue over and over and over again. Sit tight, those real games are coming

I can understand having a selection of games that appeals to both hardcore and softcore gamers. But I think that Nintendo's problem is that they want to make all of their games be appeal to everyone, and that's a kind of stupid aspiration. There should be some games that appeal to casuals, and some that appeal to the hardcore. I do not like the idea of hardcore games getting watered down just so that more casuals will buy it. An example would be includign lockon in Metroid Prime 3, even though Nintendo is constantly bragging about how easy aiming supposedly is. They watered down the experience because they think that more casuals will buy Metroid if it's simpler.

Metroid always uses lock-on (barring Hunters).

Yeah, but lock on only benefits you if you use missiles, it seems more fun to aim freely.

Lock-on has always been in Metroid Prime, however,it is unnecessary in Metroid Prime 3; You can use it,but you're perfectly fine on just aiming on your own without it.They aren't watering it down with lock-on,because lock-on has been in every Metroid Prime game.

+1

It all starts late next month, Strikers Charged comes out in North America on the 30th of July, followed by Metroid Prime 3 in August, Smash Bros and Super Mario Galaxy will be out before the holidays, plus whatever other games are getting wrapped up project wise for the Wii.

Yeah, because it was fairly hard to keep aim with a control stick,I highly doubt you will need it for Corruption though, and most FPS games on the Wii in the near future. Anyone who plays a fast paced FPS game knows that its really hard to aim when you are running around trying to avoid being killed, Unreal Tournament is a prime example of that, or hell Counter Strike, its easy to aim with a mouse, yet try a controller and you will get pwned easily.

I think the key word in this is he THINKS they can involve everyone.

That does not say straight out they are going to do involve everyone. If it's just not viable to support both types it's the hardcore gamers that are going to get the shaft.

If Nintendo did have a guarantee plan, he would have said we ARE going to involve everyone.......it's a big difference when you are thinking about something.

Regardless their still not gonna leave out the hard core gamers. THey've already made all the casuals happy so we're next and they already have games in development for us like the SMG, MP3, SSBB, Fire Emblem, No More Heroes, Manhunt2 blah blah blah and so on and so on...

I agree. The Wii won't alienate hardcore gamers. However, if Nintendo and third-party devs don't start making REAL games instead of mini-game collections with bad graphics...the games WILL alienate the hardcore.

It's not the console, it's the games. And as a Wii owner AND fan who loves the potential for the Wii to bring fresh air into gaming, I am really feeling discouraged hearing countless devs saying all I want is crappy mini-games.

Here's a hint for developers. YOU make your own fate. Nintendo is advertising to new markets because they want the most sales and the most money. However, it ultimately comes down to games. And if you all assume that Nintendo's advertising is reflective of %100 of the people buying the Wii, then you are creating your own irrelevance. You will be caught in an endless cycle of wondering why nobody buys your games and yet continuing to release crappy, half-assed games nobody really wants.

Jandurin's reply to this marks one of the reasons, Willy's is just fanboyish. But also its not just that those games were anounced before Wii's success its that there are just obviously games that cannot be done on the Wii just like there are Wii games thePS3/360 cant do. E3 and beyond we will probably start to see little by little big budget titles coming to the Wii.

Yes that's what all consoles have done to the video game industry not just the Wii.

That's seriously almost sig worthy.

The PSone just flat out killed 2D and gave a kick in the nuts to Japanese hardcore gaming.

The Xbox just pushed PC developers to dumb down their games *Rainbow Six Vegas, Oblivion, Deus Ex 2, Fallout?* which has almost killed Western hardcore gaming.

So if anything blame those consoles.

And they aren't stopping there. As I know you are Blackbond a hardcore 2D fighter, and SONY and Microsoft are pushing everything online. The problem is when you put a game online the framerate and speed dip a little *though hard to notice, and it doesn't matter your connection you can only go as fast as the server and this is with every single server out there*, though this doesn't effect most genres it does fighting. Those splitsecond hits, blocks, parrys, and overall speed of the game will be slowed or even dumbed down just because online will be the devs primary focus because that's where all the money's at.

The later group has been dominating the software offerings thus far, in fact arguably the only "hardcore" game on the system is a GCN multiplat.

And thats a minigame collection with waggle? Get real, anybody who can't see the Darkness as artistic and narrative brilliance just bugs the heck out of me. Likewise Assassin's Creed looks to be an interesting new twist on old genres, Kane & Lynch is doing a couple of new things and GTA IV looks to be extremely poetic.

Just Metroid alone says hi, many others can as well. The Wii doesnt have a ton thats for sure, and not that many high profile hardcore titles, but there are good amount coming and its a safe bet to say many more will be announced as the next few months pass by. As well games can appeal to the hardcore without sacrificing their appeal to casuals or even new gamers.

Nonsense. The Wii has a library of exclusives that could possibly supass some of the competition in the hardcore arena. Why are people so soft towards what is right in front of their eyes?

I could say right here right now that the Wii has a bigger library of exclusive hardcore titles than the PS3? Blasphemy? Well prove me otherwise... Don't just present an axiom to escape reason.

They watered down the experience because they think that more casuals will buy Metroid if it's simpler.Timstuff

[QUOTE="Teufelhuhn"]Well I'm real glad they think they can appeal to hardcore gamers.

So far I haven't seen anything to support their belief.

What are you babbling about?

Miyamoto is pretty hardcore, and of course we all want to be like Miyamoto...
