I agree with some of that stuff. I do have one gripe..

What do you mean by darker?

Twilight Princess was a very dark storyline, sad, and just had a darker tone to it.

Majora's Mask was even darker in terms of the evil possessing some of the main NPC's in the game etc.

So, did you want the story do mean even darker than those 2 games?

The Zelda series could use a step up in its overall presentation. It could use some better storytelling, orchestrated music, and voice-work can go either way. Higher difficulty is something I would appreciate also.

Couldn't agree more. With games like GTA IV and MGS4 taking producation values and presentation to new heights, the next Zelda really needs to go the extra mile, particularly as the Wii is lacking in...er...visual muscle.

It also needs to be HUGE. Around 100 hours gameplay with dungeons that take days of average playing to beat.-Sphere-

I disagree. Unless Zelda becomes way more of an RPG than the current action/adventure/rpg game it is, then 100 hours is way too long. I felt like Twilight was way too long and artificially dragged out to appease people who would wine about game length.

I disagree with your first point where you said "Link doesn't need to talk". Come on now, it's 2008... Link needs to be able to say more than just "HA!!!" "HUGH!!!" and "HEEYAHHHH!!!!!". Since he's the main character he should have at least some kind of voice and communication with other people. It's kind of sad in Zelda games when you walk around as Link talking to people like your family and your "girlfriend" and Link just stands there and doesn't say a word to them. Who would like a guy that never says a word?

Haha what if your girlfriend suddenly went mute, wouldn't that suck? Link needs a damn voice too! Someone needs to teach him some english.

wagexslave
Um, no. Gordon Freeman doesn't even talk and he's in an fps. I tend to feel more in touch with silent protagonist then with those who talk. It make it feel more like im in the game.

-Orchestrate the music. And play the main theme at least once during the game. It's treason that both of these things didnt happen in TP

-Make Ganon a part of the story, not tacked on just so Link can fight Ganon in the end

-Lets get some more story on Zelda. Or better yet, how about some RE4-type switching of characters mid-battle?

-Make the world much more lively and dangerous

-Give us more to do so that its not just grinding palaces back to back

-No more stories of Light World/ Dark World. Its been done MANY times. Lets get an original story instead of just cutting corners with map development.

Yes we know the problem with TP was it was a GC game and Nintendo knows as well and I am sure the next one will be great.

I want to see:
-greater difficulty
-more dungeons than just the usual 8
-more weapons and including uniquely design weapons for the WII controls
-more variety of bad guys and harder bad guys
-larger boss battles
-i want to actually die in this next one, not just fight and never lose more than 2 hearts
-Talking NPC characters (link must not talk, a la gordon freeman)
-Larger world
-Sidequests that matter, yes something important is gained from doing them
-Sidequests that are fun and not monotonos collection quests and take this to that quests
-Orchestrated music (must)
-worldly effects, ie: weather, day night, and even landscape altering effects
-LONG storyline with NO collecting triforce shards at the end
-dungeons need to be strung together instead of "ganon is lose, defeat the dungeons and then him for no reason"

and thats all i can think of right now.

Half-Life disagrees.

Come on, you don't think that throughout the game's various long dialogues it was weird to not hear gordon say at least one word?

What it needs the most is a change of pace. Every single Zelda game involves going inot a dungeon, finding the big key, then getting a item and then beating the boss who has a weakness against said item.

What they need to do is take a page from Okami and mess around with some new gameplay mechanics. When they spend four years making an inferior remake of Ocarina of Time you know something needs to change.

They made a remake to oot?

But on a serious note TP is much better than OOT.

Nostalgia gets in the way of you guys thinking, I promise you if TP and OOt were released side by side today TP would be the higher rated game.

Just ask the people who never played OOT, played TP then played OOt and thought WTF.

I liked TP and really have never enjoyed OoT... but TP wasn't nearly as challenging. It was fun but it left a lot to be desired. It was incredibly repetitious, even with the variable environments. Every dungeon felt like it was cut with a cookie-cutter and then painted with some bright colours.

And didn't OoT VC on the Wii score a 8.9/10? A 10th of a point higher than the Wii version of TP?

Nintendo really put Zelda in a corner with TP... it's a great game, but it's too Ocarina of Time-ish.

Voice acting for NPCs and orchestrated music would be a great start... and Ganon could take a break this time, or at least play a less significant role.

I'm actually hoping for a playable Zelda in the next game to stir things up.

I want a better fighting system and maybe even a duck and cover system like the one used in the god-like game Gears of War. Imagine hiding behind a rock with your bow pulled back then leaning out and killing the enemy. Also, to add a little replay value to the game, I want to see some online multiplayer action with intense sword fights and some fun arrow sniping.

Music being live orchestra is most likely going to be happening in the next Zelda; there's no reason not to. Twilight Princess on the Wii was a Gamecube port, so it was understandable. No voice acting has started to bug me with Twilight Princess, so that would be a good idea, too. Boss battles boil down to finding a simple pattern and getting around it; that doesn't have to be completely changed, but at least make the pattern somewhat difficult to figure out and get around. The big glowing chest area is a bit of a giveaway, if you ask me.

But other than that, I really don't have a problem. And sorry, but to HELL with the darker story idea. Too many games today have dark stories; Zelda's not all rainbows and sunshine, but by God it's different and actually has some happy parts to it, which is more than so many of the games today can say. I'm very sick of depressing, grimy stories and Zelda doesn't have to become dark just because everyone else is doing it.

That shop thing with the weird kid was a trading sequence... sort of.

The armor you got from it was horrible, though, so I could understand that you erased it from your memory.

Aside from Midna and the battle system I want to erase TP from my memory. If it didn't say Zelda on the box I wouldn't have thought I was playing a Zelda game. the game just didn't seem right at all.

Agreed. The series has gone stale and it needs something, new and fresh to revitalise it.

But still nothing truly breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

When I first played OoT and entered Hyrule Field for the first time, the camera immediately showed, what was then, the massive field in detail, immediately startling me with excitement and anticipation.

TP didn't do that and was very dull as a result. Not to mention, as already mentioned, the entire game was lifeless. The new game needs to be made from scratch - all past ideas and themes scrapped. It needs to be new; a wonderful breath of fresh air that the series desperately needs.

What was the problem with Gears? It wasn't exactly original and its story was basically throwaway, but otherwise it was well put-together and enjoyable.

For the longest time someone had a picture of Link in their sig from TP holding a chainsaw and a caption said "I guess Jeff missed this one!"

I still cannot believe that Gears won GOTY. Looking back it should have either have been Dead Rising or Okami.

What was the problem with TP? was well put-together and enjoyable.

[QUOTE="too_much_eslim"][QUOTE="super_mario_128"][QUOTE="Shinobishyguy"] If it gets the mario galaxy treatment, then it'll be a damn good game.Shinobishyguy

But still nothing truly breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

When I first played OoT and entered Hyrule Field for the first time, the camera immediately showed, what was then, the massive field in detail, immediately startling me with excitement and anticipation.

TP didn't do that and was very dull as a result. Not to mention, as "already" mentioned, the entire game was lifeless. The new game needs to be made from scratch - all past ideas and themes scrapped. It needs to be new; a wonderful breath of fresh air that the series desperately needs.

This basiclly menas Nintendo better push the hardware. Aside from SMG, metroid prime 3, and super smash brothers brawl all their games look terrible graphically.

fixed for truth

its alie though. SMG blows those game out of the water graphically. they didn't even try to put the same effort in the graphical department for those games as they did SMG.

SMG is the only game that looks stunning.

you seem to be forgetting which game nabbed GOTY and is praised for revitalizing the platforming genre.

Shinobishyguy

I think would be be "revitablizing 3-D Mario platformers", not the platforming genre. Because seriously, what future platformer is gonna be able to do the things Mario Galaxy did and not get pegged for ripping it off? Only a Mario game is going to be able to get away with doing those again without being criticized for it.

Basically this. People complained that WW and MM were too different, so they just gave in and made TP similar to OOT. Needless to say people were still complaining.

They should just stop listening to their fans and just do what comes naturally to them.

I never said anything was "wrong" with it I was just expressing my disbelief in it winning a GOTY award over games like Dead Rising and Okami. Original games that tried something new and/or unique and successfully made it work and made it incredibly fun.

I guess I should expect it anyways, GOTY awards are more about popularity than they are about quality now anyways. Gears, like Halo, never really did anything new or unique and only took gameplay elements and squished them together into a neat, albeit short, package. And, just like like Halo, it is an action gamer's dream come true.

It is sad how games like Okami just fall between the floor boards and their development studios get shut down because they cannot make enough sales because they aren't appealing to the mainstream audience.

[QUOTE="VGobbsesser"]Just give me a trading sequence (that was sadly omitted from Twilight Princess),and I'll be happy.Shinobishyguy

If it gets the mario galaxy treatment, then it'll be a damn good game.

Cool. Mario Galaxy is an amazing game, but hardly a masterpiece. Seriously, it's about as deep as a frying pan and has the replay value of a fat woman. :| Mario sacrificed any sort of story for fun, and it works for a while. Zelda is a game which requires a truly unique story and some decent storytelling. In fact, it needs some decent graphics aswell (not a bash on the Wii, because frankly I could care less for which system is "better"), because the scenery in TP was horrible. I'd actually be happy with cel-shading if the only alternative is the crud we got in TP.

[QUOTE="too_much_eslim"]I enjoyed Gears a lot though.foxhound_fox

It was a fun game for one play-through but it didn't really have any staying power.

I played single player at least 3 times an dits online is quite addicting. There isn't anything else out there like it. ALso it was a graphical treat and made people feel as though they were finally playing a next gen game.

While the story was really there You understod everything you was doing and why.

considering that it has a whopping 97% and is right up there on the top ranked games of all time I'd say yes...it is a master piece as far as platformers go.

Well, it could have easily been Okami's lack of marketing. I wouldn't have heard of that game if I didn't look at websites about games. Same with Psychonauts. Publishers are afraid to advertise the games they're not sure will sell well, when in reality being afraid to advertise them is condemning them. Who knows? With some proper advertising, they might have sold well. Sure, Gears appeals to the mainstream but Microsoft basically made it a big deal themselves through marketing. If Okami had that kind of exposure, it might have sold decently at least.

thats the problem. You are comparing it to crappy looking games that have been released. They look slightlly better than their gamecube counterparts. SMG destroys it gamecube counterpart.

"You are named Marcus, this is Dom, here is a gun, now go kill these alien things that are trying to kill you."

That is pretty much Gears' story. Not really that hard to understand what is going on. With what little I was able to draw from the game and the Locusts, it could have been SO much better. They could have had a 20 minute intro explaining the back-story to why the humans are on the planet, why the Locusts are pissed off, why the humans are trying to fight back when they could just leave.

It could have been a defining moment in sci-fi gaming history... but it was just another action game with lots of bloody action and nothing to go on besides "here is some aliens you need to kill."

Again, how it beat out Dead Rising and Okami amazes me.
