I'm not sure if there was already a thread about this but anyway, what's your opinion on this? Has McNally (the playwriter) gone too far?

There is no such thing as going too far. People that can't take it need to grow a thicker skin or live in their land where freedom of speech and expression do not exist!
Yes there is , and people DO have the right to be outraged, cause I know I am. I take things in stride, and I RARELY get offended, but this is definitely going to far.
You can say all you want about Jesus, and if you get offended, people say your "close minded." But if you say anything bad about any other religious figure, suddenly, your this awful bigot. I'm sick of it personally.
I guess having respect for someone's faith only applies to certain people though. Complete double standards in a very hypocritical society.
Underlined, italic, bold part: Utter bollocks, if this is your perception, adjust it.
Also your reason to be outraged doesn't give them the right. Freedom of expression, the same thing that allows the play, gives them that right. If it was a gay mohammed, I wouldn't care. If it were the Aesir displayed as gay I wouldn't care.
If you're so outraged, that means that you apparently believe freedom of expression is wrong! Though you would rather say: "Freedom of expression being abused". The only way you can abuse freedom of expression, is if you change the 'freedom' part.
Making a joke out of a religious icon, displaying him/her differently to make a point, is not disrespect for religion. Just because you don't agree with the message or point, or don't laugh at is, doesn't mean that it should never be made. That is why you are called close-minded.
