[QUOTE="Alleluia_Cone"]For what it's worth: I own a Wii, and bought it on opening weekend, just as I did for the Gamecube, the N64, the SNES, and the NES. 3picuri3

same here ;) lined up at launch - just like i did for the other 2 consoles. the ps3 is the only one that left a bad taste in my mouth though.. getting sick of dusting the puppy off -- i need some real quality games and fast.

I've been playing Playstation 2 games on it, which I guess is a testament to the dearth of games for it right now. On the other hand, I haven't played the Wii at all since I finished Twilight Princess, which, incidentally, I was greatly disappointed in-the game feels the same as Ocarina of Time, only ten times easier.

I am not remotely excited about any game coming up for either system before maybe Assassin's Creed and Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

Not at all. Wii and 360 preorders indicated they could have sold well over that amount on their launch weekends -- moreso for the Wii though.

But this was also in a time frame right before the holiday season when console sales are traditionally at their peak performance. I just think it would be insane to make this type of comparison given all the different variables involved (i.e. price-point, time frame, level of stock, etc.).

about as ridiculous as claiming it's some sort of sign that the console is in good health.

you can't take one side of this story without looking at the obvious flip-side.

I wouldn't think it a sign of good health, the first week sales are pretty much expected in my opinion. That kind of determination, of whether the Playstation 3 is a success or not, probably cannot be determined before the 2008 holiday season at the earliest. So far it has kept pace with first-year sales for the Xbox 360, which I find somewhat surprising since it costs more and is in a competitive marketplace, whereas the Xbox 360 faced no next-generation competitors for such a long time.

It would be extremely difficult to sell-out a shipment of 220,000 console, regardless of whether it was Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft.

Also lost among this discussion is that Sony debuted in the middle of March, not in the months leading to Christmas, which any reasonable person is able to see gave a huge advantage to Nintendo and Microsoft in terms of initial shipment sales.

Wii could easily sell out a 220,000 unit shipment, peopla re still lining up for it

I wouldn't debate that, but the Wii is, after all, significantly cheaper: £179 vs. £425. That is roughly a $500 dollar difference, a disparity much greater than that in the United States.

[QUOTE="Army_Veteran"]

Here is a sotry I saw on game informer, It talks about a blue ray add on. I am wanting to get a blue ray player because there is alot of movies that come out on blue ray that I would like and not on HDDVD, I have the HDDVD ad on for the 360 and love it, but I would love a blue ray player. I am even to a point of buying a PS3 just for the player. So how true does this seam, if it happens I would rather buy it than buy a PS3.

If blu-ray wins the the format war than MS will most likly make an add-on, but if the formats stay really close to each other, movie companies may start making films in both formats...then you can just stick with your HD-DVD drive....
I think what may happen is that both formats will succeed and film companies will be forced to support both...just like we have 3 different games consoles, we may have 2 different movie formats...

I find this unlikely, only Universal is exclusively supporting HD-DVD while Columbia Pictures, MGM, Disney, Lionsgate, and 20th Century Fox are exclusively supporting Blu-Ray, the remaining studios supporting both. Also, the 3-to-1 software sells advantage for Blu-Ray in 2007 so far does not bode well for HD-DVD. I am pretty sure a Blu-Ray add-on is in the Xbox 360's future.

I am such a die-hard Final Fantasy fan that I couldn't even envision the possibility of dropping the franchise. If it was the only exclusive that Sony had, I would still be forced into buying the system since I need to play every edition of the game (with the exception, perhaps, of XI).

[QUOTE="CelineDion"]

1) Japan is the largest market for Final Fantasy games.

2) The X360 install base in Japan is not appreciably larger than the PS3 install base in Japan.

3) FFXIII is being built on the White Engine, designed for the ground up for the Cell, making it difficult to port.

4) Sony owns a small part of Square-Enix, and has at least some sway on executive-level decisions.

5) Putting FFXIII on X360 arguably wouldn't help FFXIII sales in Japan, but would help FFXIII sales in the US. Therefore, Sony would only really need to pay Square-Enix enough money to balance out the lost US sales, which wouldn't be that much, at least compared to what Square would lose if X360 had a large Japanese install base.

Crystal ball ftw. 360 could become huge in Japan. They have the best rpg's this gen.

To be fair, I was in Japan recently, and the Xbox 360 is about as popular as AIDS over there. For whatever reason, there is this whole perception problem.

Right, but niether of you are seeing the true dillema here: even if Sony offers a massive amount of cash plunging them into a more severe debt, Square still wants to develope for a broader user base than what PS3 can offer. With PS2 they wouldn't have to pay nearly as much because thats where the gamers were.

I think you have to be cognizant of the fact that Final Fantasy is infinitely more popular in Japan than in the United States. Having been to Japan on numerous occasions, I can honestly say that the Xbox 360 is about as well liked over there as AIDS. So I don't think it would be that much of an advantage to have Final Fantasy XIII go multi-platform unless they can somehow get it to work on the Wii (which I doubt).

Moreover, if you look at game sales for the Final Fantasy series in the United States, they have steadily decreased since their peak during the release of Final Fantasy VII (which sold something to the tune of 10 million copies worldwide). The most recent game in the series has sold almost twice as well in Japan as it has here. I expect this trend to continue since American gamers seem to be fixated on first-person shooters and action/adventure games, as opposed to the role-playing variety.
