That's the question I want answered. Since when has the majority been allowed to dictate what a minority can or cannot do?

Well, done. you've just defined "democracy".... not that I ever thought the US was a real democracy.

I really don't understand what could possibly be so bad about homosexual unions being called "civil unions", especially if the benefits were the same, legally. No matter what it's called, it will never be the same type of relationship.

Anyway, as I said earlier, these threads will only get me suspended again. It's always the same arguments getting thrown back and forth, with people misunderstanding posts and shoving words into people's mouths due to completely missing the point.  It is pretty obvious that there will always be opponents and proponents.

In my opinion, its great that Prop 8 passed. Hopefully it will lead to the same kind of civil union system they have in the UK.

I have coursework to do, so I will leave it at that.

xaos

Sun Tzu just pointed out a hugely significant way in which they differ; by the way, you seem to change arguments pretty freely, with the only constant being opposition to gay marriage.

I don't change arguments at all, I simply have a few reasons why I think it's wrong. Presenting a series of points with the same goal isn't the same as changing ones mind.

And I did catch Sun Tzu's argument. If you had been reading my posts clearly, you would have noticed I said I have no problem with civil unions, esp those in the UK, where they enjoy the same rights as marriages. And, once again, Hopefully Prop 8 will lead to this kind of system.

My main gripe from the get-go has been the alteration of the definition of marriage. And all my arguments have been in support of that.

Obviously, you've been living in a closet. Since when have blacks been equal to whites? I mean, I have a great many black friends, but we all know that our culture/society still doesn't have blacks as equals. The prejudice and racism is still rampant. Nope, not equal yet.

And quit putting words in my mouth. I never said all couples are the same at all. I said a gay couple is not the same as a straight couple, generally speaking. Straight couples have the potential of reproduction. That is not possible for any gay couple, therefore - Not Equal.

-Sun_Tzu-

Since when has the ability to reproduce been a requirement to get married?

Once again, you're missing the point. Read my post again... I never said that the ability to reproduce should be a prerequisite for marriage. I said, gays are not equal to normal couples because even the potential is non-existent. In simpleton terms - "the parts don't fit"

I'm sorry, but the definition of marriage has been around much, much longer than America. I'm not talkin about some US court definition. I'm obviously referring to the time-honored traditional and historical definition. (ie. Man + Woman)

Think outside the box a little, guys.

I'm not saying anything about overriding opinions or anything like that - just posted this because I'm glad to see that there are people who can see the bigger picture and not make a fuss about "equality" when homo vs hetero unions will never be equal, because they are not the same.

Prop 8 is not about banning gays from having the same rights, its about keeping the definition of marriage the same as it has been for thousands of years. They can have the same benefits, just call it a civil union instead, which is logical because thats what it is. Seems to work just fine in the UK.

Anyway, I'm not up for defending my point again because I participated quite actively in the first big Prop 8 thread and ended up getting banned. :)
