I agree with what a lot of people here are saying. Really any game that gives you such freedom of choice and expression like Oblivion or Mass Effect should be held in high regard.
However, having said that lets be honest these games are "Evolutionary" Not "Revolutionary" granted they were impressive staples for the next generation and truly a bar has been set for the sheer amount of side quests and making your own personal avatar to best suit your choices and demeanor. But at the end of the day when you have exhausted your side-quests and have played the story to the peak of it's amazingly intricate and well written plot it comes to the very bare bones fact that now that you have done all this for yourself, for the kingdom ,for the very existence of the galaxy!
What are you left with? 2 Endings!!!! that's it!
ALL!! this effort for 1 of 2 Possible endings!!!! and that's for Mass Effect! Oblivion only has 1 Stinking Ending!!!
what the hell? I thought this was "The NEXT GENERATION OF GAMING!"
Well, if that's so why are we given such lush environments a plethora of customizable options just to essentially (analogy)be led down a gloriously decorated hallway of fantastic locations and memorable characters just to open door number 1 or door number 2. Games of this caliber and magnitude leave me disappointed and unjustified in my actions when I was playing the game as I had many choices to make and now at the END? what?....oh that's right I forgot It's just a game, not the experiences I had just this lame predictable ending, and I suppose if I go through it again...oh ok different ending this time. but just as lame.
Better games mean MORE choices. But don't fudge on the ending! That's where the most important choices can reside or better yet make the character feel they had the chance and the choice to change the world they were in.
Sorry for the rant. Long story short (too late) these games are great! But could have been outstanding!
