Was the problem? Your electric bill to high? Why fix what isn't broken. Your 4870 is still running right? I don't think the heat will kill it.SinfulPotato

No problem. I know I'm being picky, but I just don't like the idea of having the hottest, biggest power hog card on the market. My Antec 550W PSU is getting old and while I have had no problems at all with it yet I know it's probably stressing it more than is necessary.

I might sell my 4870 on eBay, I will probably get $130-$140. Its amazing how close to the new New Egg price computer hardware goes for on eBay. And then buy the 4890...

This is more of an FYI as its no longer a problem.

About a month ago I had the Phenom II X2 550 and upgraded to the X4 955. I had Win7 installed and just swapped the chips. Everything ran just fine but the new 955 heat sink was just running like crazy! I was like have a 747 under my desk. I could even hear it spin loader if I opened a few browsers. After a few days of that I was all ready to order a new heatsync when I reinstalled Win7 for another reason. After I reinstalled Win7 the heatsync has been totaly silent. Even when playing games. It seems that Win7's heat mgmt was calibrated for the older CPU and without reinstalling it thought the CPU was REALLY hot. When it wasnt at all.

Kind of weired and funny. If you get a new, similar CPU, reinstall Win7!

Its a great card and I have no issues with its perfomance but I have seen charts about how much power it uses and how hot it gets compared to almost all other cards. And its even worse at idle, the thing just chugs power at idle more thany any other card out there. The 4890 is way better at power and heat so I'm thinking about getting it even though from a performance point of view its not that much faster.

What other card are better than the 4870 and under $250?

If it is, thats an awesome solution and fits in his budget nicely ^^MuddVader

Both DDR2 and DDR3 are 240pin. The board lists as DDR3 support. But I thought all DDR3 boards could take DDR2. Not sure though. We need someone else to confirm that.

Nope. The pinouts are different and the voltages would fry the board. DDR3 would be needed for the above-mentioned board.

Oh, thats too bad because DDR3 is so damn expesive right now. 2 gigs is like $60.... 4 gig is like $100+

Nice. But wow is that thing going to cook when you are playing games!! lol The 4870 gets so hot and uses so much power. Like more than any other video card on the market. I cant believe they put one in a laptop!

Just get this board - Asus M4N68T - $54.99

And the AMD Phenom II X2 545 (3.0GHz) $87OR the AMD Phenom II X4 620 (2.6GHz)$99.

I'm pretty sure your DDR2 RAM will work in that board. Anyone know if thats true or not?

What is your video card? I play the crap out of WiC on my setup in Win7. I have it maxed out. Its one of my favorite games. I play it online like every night. Cant wait for a full sequel to that game. It one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.
