A source inside Bungie claims that Bungie going independant is a bit of a stretch. The insider (who for obvious reasons wish to remain annonymous), claims that MS is trying to make up for its losses that the XboX division has been costing them. However, MS themselves can't start developing for rival platforms directly, as that would be working against themselves. Enter Bungie. Under the guise of contract, MS retains the rights to the franchise that made the brand: Halo, this ensures that you have to go to MS for Halo.
When asked which platforms Bungie would be developing for, our source stated to expect Bungie games to appear on both the DS and Wii. When asked about the PS3 platform, it was stated that the PS3 base isn't large enough to turn over the kind of profit they'd like right now and that cost of development and development time are too high at this time, but that could change in the future.
While Bungie will retain a majority of profit earned, MS gets a modest % of their earnings on multi-console projects. DS and Wii projects are expected to be released as early as next year's holiday season.
