Bam's anime reviews: Appleseed

Appleseed is an CGI anime flim that was directed by Shinji Aramaki and was released in Japan in 2004. This movie does share some characters from the 1988 ova of the same name, but the story in this movie is completely different from the ova. The movie takes place in the year 2131 and after the events of World War III. It starts off when a character named Deunan Knute, who is a young female solider and survivor of the third world war, was placed in battle along with her comrades to take out super hi-tech robots that were attacking her and her fellow men. During the fight, Deunan has been saved by tall white-armoured soldiers and then ending up tranqulizing Deunan and took her to the city of Olympus. She encounters 2 characters named Hitomi and Briareos, who was Deunan's former lover and comrade that is in the body of a cyborg.

Deunan finds out that the third world war has been over months before while she continued fighting unknowing of this. Now Olympus is being controlled by the Council of Elders and they are linked to an artificial intelligence named Gaia, which is responsible for operating the entire city. It is also being controlled by 2 other factions. Prime Minister Atena, who is a first-generation Bioroid that was created by Deunan's mother, and General Edward Uranus III, who is the Supreme Commander of the Olympus Regular Army that has a big distrust in Bioroids. Bioroids are a genetic species that have a shorter lifespan then humans and they don't feel certain emotions like love and so forth. But there is a war going on between the people of Olympus and General Uranus's army and it's up to Deunan and Briareos to stop this war. The story is this movie is awesome. It never ever gets to a point where it's convoluted or whatever. It explains it very well and it's really cool on how it does that. And the movie is jam-packed with action scenes and it's one of the highlights of this movie. There is a lot of mech battles and a lot of stuff that's happening in this flim. And there is no point in Appleseed where you will tend to get bored for a while. It's just a very fun and intense movie.

The characters in this movie are all likeable. I really like Deunan with her badass attitude and all that. I also like Briareos, Athena, Hitomi, and General Uranus quite a lot. All the characters have great personalitys on here and not one character on here has either a bad first impression or even as a stall personality. They are all great. Now for the artstyle of this movie. Actually you know what, I can't really say that Appleseed has an artstyle. It's actually an CGI movie with the use of something called as what many gamers call cel-shading. And the cel-shading in this movie is really good. I'm really am impressed on how the developers use cel-shading in an CGI anime movie like Appleseed. The animation is stellar in this movie. I mean, watch the animation of the battle scenes in the movie and you will see on how amazing the animation is in this movie.

I watch the english dub version of this movie and the english voice work is actually very good. Let me bring up examples on the people I recognized in this movie. Briareos is voiced by Jamieson Price, who was responsible for Walter Bernhard in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and Reeve in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. Athena is voiced by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who voiced Medusa in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and Nevan the Lighting Witch in Devil May Cry 3. Yoshi is voiced by Dave Wittenberg, who voiced Yazoo in Advent Children, Leon Belmont in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, Gladiator in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Angel in X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse. And General Uranus is voiced by Michael McConnohie, who voiced Astaroth in Soul Calibur III. The only issue I have with the voice acting is there were some cases where the dialogue tends to get dragged on for a little bit. But that's a minor issue and it doesn't really kill the movie in that aspect. The music is great in this movie. It consists of techno and electronica and it has some good musical artists on the soundtrack like Paul Oakenfield, Basement Jaxx, Boom Boom Satellites and among others.

In the end, Appleseed is a fantastic movie that anyone will really get a big kick out of off. The great story, great characters and amazing battle sequences really make this movie very fun and very thrilling to watch. If you want to see an intense anime flim, then Appleseed is really what you are looking for.

Bam's anime reviews: Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie is a two episode OVA that was released in Japan in 1996 and in America on September 9, 1999, which is actually the same exact date for the North American release of Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast. The story starts off when Sonic and Tails were on a peaceful vacation until a messenger from The President named Old Man Owl came to ask both of our little heroes to come to his office. Unfortunately, The President and his daughter Sara were kidnapped by none other then Dr. Robotnik. In order for Robotnik to let go the President and Sara as hostages, Dr. Robotnik sents Sonic and Tails to get out a giant mech robot called Metal Robotnik that appears in a town called Robotropolis. So, Sonic and Tails were sent out to the Land of Darkness to stop Metal Robotnik. Along the way, they encounter Knuckles and our 3 creature friends discovered Metal Robotnik is actually Dr. Robotnik and he used Metal Robotnik to lure Sonic to his base in order to copy his memories and knowledge for his robot called Hyper Metal Sonic.

The story is actually good, for an anime that is set in the universe of Sonic the Hedgehog. One odd thing I can say about the plot though is that the movie can be quite perverted in some cases. For example, there was one case where Tails accidentally grab's Sara breasts and Knuckles said " I never thought you'd stoop that low". It kinda makes you wonder why would the developers of this movie put something like this in an anime flim that is targeted for kids. Any flim or a series that is based off on Sonic the Hedgehog is not supposed to have some pervertness, because that's not how the games were like. But even with the pervertness this movie offers, I still think the plot is actually pretty good.

I have mixed reactions for the characters in this movie. In the case of the Sonic characters on here, I think Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik and even Metal Sonic are portrayed really well in the movie. The one thing that bothers me about Knuckles is that he wears a hat, the first time you encounter him. The reason why it bothers me is because he never wore a hat in the games, so why is he wearing a hat in this movie? But besides that, the Sonic characters are good. But, all the non Sonic characters are very unlikeable. I don't like Old Man Owl all that much. He comes off really annoying. I don't like The President either, because his personality is really stall. I even don't like Sara, because she overreacted so much in this movie. There was something that bothered me about Sara. Why was she happy when Dr. Robotnik gave her a gown and later gets mad when Robotnik asker her to marry him? I just think she could've think harder the minute she sees the wedding gown and then she could've realized on what Robotnik is planning on doing. So, I think the non Sonic characters is another flaw of this movie.

The animation is good in this anime, however I felt that the artstyle of this movie looks very dumb-downed. I just think the colors in this movie look a little bland just by how they look. I just think it could have been done better then how it is. But the biggest problem in the entire movie is without a doubt, the english dub voice acting. Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie has one of the most dreadful english voice work I have ever seen in an anime. Sonic sounds like a bit like Mandark from the cartoon show, Dexter's Laboratory and Tails sounds a lot like Bart Simpson. All the other characters sound awful as well, although I can't compared their voice to certain characters in certain cartoon shows just like how I did to Sonic and Tails. So really, the english voice acting is really that bad. The music is good in this movie. You'll hear a lot of good catchy beats that fits well to the vibe of the Sonic universe. The only track I don't like in this movie is the ending theme. I just didn't like on how it was performed.

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie is a pretty fair movie. Because of the little amount of pervertness in the story, the unlikeable non Sonic characters and the god awful english voice acting, this is something that you shouldn't get into for an anime that is based off on a popular video game franchise. But I'm not that this movie is immediately bad. It will certainly fall decent to most of you anime fans, depending on your tastes of things. So, if you want to see a decent anime itself, then check out Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. If you are a hardcore fan of the little guy, I wouldn't suggest watching this movie because there's not really a lot of things in there that would really impress you. If you want to see better cartoons of Sonic the Hedgehog, I suggest you watch either all the american cartoons that feature Jaleel White and even the anime series, Sonic X. Those Sonic cartoons are better to watch then this one.

Bam's anime reviews: Please Save My Earth

Please Save My Earth is an six episode OVA that was directed by Kazuo Yamazaki in 1993. The story centers on 7 people in Japan that has been having particular dreams about 7 alien scientists that were stationed on the moon collecting date from our planet. The main characters of the anime is high school student Alice Sakaguchi and her seven-year old neighbor, Rin Kobayashi. When Rin and Alice were traveling to the zoo, they encountered 2 guys by the names of Jinpachi and Issei. Jinpachi and Issei told Alice about their dreams they have been having since middle school. This doesn't really affects Alice, until she found out that she has one of those moon dreams herself. So, the three decided to search for the other four people who had these particular dreams. The other people are Sakura Kokushou, Haruhiko Kazama and Daisuke Dobashi. The six teenagers that Rin has also been having these dreams, as well.

Now, each of those people have dream of one certain scientist that were on the moon. Alice is an reincarnation of Mokuren. Mokuren is the team's biologist. She is the gorgeous woman with blonde hair. Rin Kobayashi is an reincarnation of Shion. Shion is this man with a very rough past as a child that he became the engineer of the team. Haruhiko is a reincarnation of Shukaido, the team's physician. Jinpachi is an reincarnation of Gyokuran, the team's archaeologist. Issei is an reincarnation of Enju, the anthropologist. Sakura is an reincarnation of Shusuran, the physicist. And finally, Daisuke is an reincarnation of Hiiragi, the team leader. Now you are probably thinking, how did those scientists died? Well, all seven scientist had received a deadly virus and that virus has killed all 7 of those scientists. They appeared on our planet, but were reincarnated as those 7 people living in Japan. This anime has a really well told story, although I do have a couple issues with the plot.

The first problem I have with the plot is that it really doesn't give you a lot of infomation. It really doesn't tell you a lot how the scientists and what have you. Another thing that bothers me the most is that the ending feels unfinished. The ending makes you think that this anime didn't really end. I know why it's like this though. Unfortunately, the development team only put work on telling the first half of the manga in anime form. In my opinion, I think they should have continued the anime. But instead of it being an OVA, I think it should be better off as a series. As it is, some of the aspects of the story and the ending does leave something to be desired.

The characters are ok. Alice is shy and quiet, throughout the anime. She kinda reminds of me a bit, because I'm little bit shy and quiet myself (outside of Gamespot.) At first, I never did like Rin because he acted such a prick But as the anime progresses, he was starting to become likeable. Jinpachi and Issei are fine. Haruhiko is ok. He crys a lot in the anime. I'm not too crazed with Sakura and Daisuke. As for the scientists, I like Mokuren. She is very nice. I like Shion and Shukaido. I can't say anything on Gyokuran, Enju, Shusuran and Hiiragi. I felt that this anime didn't put enough character development to those scientists. They only put a little bit more work on Mokuren, Shion and Shukaido. You get to know those 3 characters more because there are shown in the anime more so. But it's a shame that the other scientists aren't shown a whole lot and because of that, I feel that the developer studio didn't put enough effort into those characters. So overall, I have mixed reactions on the characters.

The artstyle in the anime looks terrific, the same goes for the animation. I didn't see any messed up animations or some other things like that. I think the anime's animation is really good and smooth in this ova. I watched the english dub version of this anime and the voice acting in the english dub is very good. Let me bring a couple of example of some of the actors that I recognize in the ova. Jinpachi and Gyokuran are voiced by Tony Sampson, who was known as Eddy from the american cartoon show, Ed, Edd n Eddy. Issei is voiced by Mark Hildreth, who also voiced Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing and Terry Bogard in the Fatal Fury trilogy. The music in the anime is really good.

Overall, Please Save My Earth is one of the most unique animes I've seen. If it had a bit more character development to some of the scientists and the fact that the story could've had more time and effort, this anime might have been in the superb category. If you want to see something different in a science fiction, then check out Please Save My Earth. If you want to see a sci-fi anime that has a story that's simple to follow along, then this anime is not what you're looking for because of how the story not really giving you a lot of infomation and how the story itself can sometimes be confusing to you. But give it a look, if you are really that curious.

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie

I got a new game today

Hey, guys. I got a new game at Circuit City today. It's a retro compilation that I really wanted really, really badly.

Street Fighter Anniversary Collection Boxshot

Street Fighter Anniversary Collection

This compilation comes with Hyper Street Fighter II, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and as a bonus feature, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (which I own separately)

I might get into that game after I review the anime, Please Save My Earth. That's my little update for today. See you later.

Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower review/ I saw Batman Begins

Hi, guys. I made a game review yesterday, after I made my anime review for School Days. I didn't want to put in a link to my game review on a post that's talking about my latest anime review or something like that, cause I think it's kinda stupid if I did it that way. And if you haven't seen my review for School Days, check it out when you get a chance.

But this is not what this post is about. Yesterday, I did a game review of a PSP game called Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower. Check it out.

In other news, I finished watching the movie Batman Begins yesterday and I thought it was pretty good.

The reason I saw the movie was because I saw The Dark Knight first and never got a chance to watch that movie. But I had the chance to rented it off on Netflix, watched it and I enjoyed it. Looking back at The Dark Knight and comparing that to Batman Begins, I will say that Batman Begins is not as good as The Dark Knight. That's all I have to say. See you later.

Bam's anime reviews: School Days

School Days is a 12 episode anime series that came out in 2007 that was based off on a PC game that came out in Japan in 2005. Let's get into my review. Now, I'm also going to go in a ranting direction, in some parts of this review because there are some things that I need to explain, in terms of the characters. Let's get started.

The story starts off with a student named Makoto Itou, who is a young japanese high school student. In the process of riding a train to his school, he encounters a young girl by the name of Kotonoha Katsura. Makoto took a picture of her on his cellphone, due to the fact that he becomes easily attracted to Kotonoha. However, an acquaintance of Makoto named Sekai Saionji discovers his crush on Kotonoha and decided to help introduce both, Kotonoha and Makato, to each other. And with that, both of them starting dating and it also leaves a bit of jealousy from Sekai because of the couple. In my opinion, I think the story is good, but it's nothing really special in an anime. This anime has a story that centers on real life in high school, so it's not going to be something special in an anime like this.

What really bothers me mostly in this anime is the characters. Almost, half of the characters included in this anime are not likeable. Makoto is such an idiot in this series, mainly because of dating a lot of girls in this show and can't choose which girl he likes the most. He dates Kotonoha, Sekai and another girl named Hikari. So, I really can't stand Makoto. Kotonoha was a good character (in the first half of the show). But as soon as the second half started, she started to be unlikeable. First reason as to why I find her some unlikeable how can she say "I'm still Makoto's girlfriend", when she sees Makoto with Sekai a few times? Doesn't she realize straight up that Makoto ditches Kotonoha and falls in love with Sekai? And worst yet, Kotonoha never gets mad at Makoto! Instead, she gets mad at Sekai because she thinks Sekai stole Makoto away from Kotonoha. I mean, look at it this way. Let's pretend that I'm starting a love relationship of a girl named Rachel. I took a picture of her in my cellphone and a friend of mine, who is a girl, named Jennifer discovers my little crush on Rachel, ok? Jennifer makes me and Rachel introduce ourselves to each other. We both start our first date and Jennifer gets a little jealous because of how both me and Rachel are dating. Overtime, I secretly ditch Rachel and go out dating with Jennifer. If Rachel finds out that I'm dating Jennifer, you know who will Rachel slap for this? Me. That's how most girls are nowadays when their original boyfriends ditch them and those guys go out with another girl. Rachel would slap me, instead of Jennifer. Why?, because Rachel would by the fact that I ditch her rather then Rachel thinking that Jennifer stole me away from Rachel. You get my point on this folks. I really can't stand on how it was set up differently in School Days.

And here's another reason, as to why I don't like Kotonoha. At the point where Makoto was on the side of loving Sekai more then Kotonoha, he tells her that their relationship is over. Kotonoha got upset and felt sad because of their break-up, at that point. Then around the end of episode 11, Kotonoha encounters Makoto. And guess what, she didn't appeared angry when she encountered him. Instead, she was all happy. That's not how most girls act like in real life, when they see their exboyfriends. They would mostly appear angry when a certain girl encounters an exlover. That's really messed up in the anime. Now let's move to the other characters, since I got my feelings of Makoto and Kotonoha out of the way. Sekai doesn't really impress me all that much. I don't like Setsuna, because she gives out a terrible first impression. She started out mad and she's been like that in the anime for a while. I think she could given out a better first impression, where she was good at first. Then make her be mad around the second half of the show, that way the character development of Setsuna would have been better that way. You could've made her like the aunt from the anime movie, Grave of the Fireflies. But as it is, Setsuna is not a good character. I like some of the other characters. I like Taisuke, Makoto's friend and I also like Kotonoha's little sister, Kokoro. And the other girls, which are Hikari, Otome and Nanami, are ok, even I'm not too crazed for them. So, there are some characters I like, but there are some characters I dislike.

Certaintly, there are other positive points in School Days besides the fact that some of the characters are likeable. The artstyle in this anime is really good and the animation is really nice. Despite that this anime takes place in a high school, you're not going to see any flashy stuff or anything. But the animation is still good. There are a couple of things that bother me, though. First of all, who came up with the idea of having the rest of the students look like dummies in a clothes store, over the main and secondary characters in the first episode? That really bothers the hell out of me. Now before I go on to my next problem with the animation, I must say this will spoil some people who haven't watch this show. I hate giving out spoiler alerts, but I have to address this issue because it is another flaw I have with the animation. In the final episode where Sekai kills Makoto with a kitchen knife and Kotonoha killing Sekai, you see black blood. Why the hell is the blood black in the anime? It's supposed to be red. That's really weird.

Soundwise, the anime sounds superb. The japanese voice work is great and the music is awesome. There is a lot of piano music that plays during the episodes of the show and it reallys fit well to the overall theme of School Days. The opening is pretty good and there is quite a lot of ending themes for the show and they all sound very nice. One problem I have with this anime (in the case of the subtitles) was that you see english and japanese lyrics of a song, while you watch a certain episode. That's weird on how you see that. And that is something that no other anime has done. I mean when you watch an anime, the only subtitles you see while watching an episode is english subtitles in a japanese dub anime. They never show you japanese and english lyrics in those episodes. But it's strange that School Days does that. But with that little issue, the sound is this anime is spectacular.

School Days is a very shallow anime. With it's generic plot and some unlikeable characters added in the mix, it's just not a very fun show to watch, even with it's great animation and having very awesome sound quality, that still wouldn't save this anime for me giving it a bit of a higher score. If you're looking for an anime that has a story that draws you in, then School Days is not the show you should get into.

My review of Art of Fighting Anthology

Hey, guys. I have another game review today and it's one of the games that I got yesterday. And it's Art of Fighting Anthology. My score of the game is higher then Gamespot, because they gave it a 4.5. But, don't listen to their review. It's really dumb and biased. Read my review, instead. I explain the compilation a bit better. So, check it out and see what you think.

2 new games

Art of Fighting Anthology

It got's a bad rating to Gamespot. But I find their review to that game biased and I bought it for myself for a couple of reasons: I got it because I'm now getting heavily into the games that were on the NeoGeo and I already own other compilations from SNK Playmore. Metal Slug Anthology, Fatal Fury Battle Archieves Vol 1 and 2 and SNK Arcade C-l-a-s-s-i-c-s Vol.1

Now I have to get World Heroes Anthology, Samurai Shodown Anthology, The King of Fighters 2000/2001, The King of Fighters 02/03 and The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga (which has KOF 95, 96, 97 and as for bonus games, 94 and 98.)

Bam's anime reviews: Trigun

Trigun is a western adventure anime series released in 1998. It was directed by Satoshi Nishimura and it was animated by Madhouse studios. Trigun tells the story of a man named Vash the Stampede, who is this wandering gunman that has a large bounty on him. A bounty of sixty billion "double dollars" on his head for the destruction of the city called July. However, he can't remember that certain event due to amnesia. He has been followed by 2 insurance employees named Meryl and Milly. They were following Vash because they wanted to minimize the damage caused by his appearance. He is also introduced by another character in the series named Nicholas D. Wolfwood, who joins Vash in some occasions in the series.

The series also centers on Vash's own past and also a bit on history of human civilization on the planet called Gunsmoke. Now some of you might be thinking, is it one of those series that have a story that continues throughout the series or is it one of those series that has episodes are told differently like Cowboy Bebop? To me, it's a little bit of both. It is one of those series where it doesn't have a continuous story in the anime. Most of the episodes on here are told differently. The episodes mainly center on Vash doing something in a certain city that involves either by criminals attacking a certain town or by dealing with townspeople that want Vash dead because they wanted the sixty billion "double dollars" on him so that they wouldn't be poor anymore.

But to some degree, it does have a continuous story. Here's my reason why. It features a character on here named Legato Bluesummers. He is one of the villains in the series. He is shown everywhere in the series and Vash does a get a reaction of him in some parts of the show. So the series kinda has a story that continues, but not by much. Aside from that though, the plot in the show is good. The show's comic relief will definitely keep you entertained and will never get to a certain point where you get bored. The plot does tend to get darker. But for the most part, the show is very light-hearted.

The characters in the show are all good. Vash is a good and funny character. He has two different impressions he makes in the series. In one case, he'll act tough and have a badass attitude. But on the other hand, he'll get all wacky, start throwing tantrums and so forth. I like Wolfwood. Meryl is one fussy character, despite her serious attitude and short temper. But besides that, she is a good person. Milly is the opposite of Meryl. She is always happy, has a very kind heart and appears simple and ditzy in the series. She does get in a temper, but not like Meryl. She only gets angry if someone is disrespectful toward their family or wasting food, more specifically pudding. There are more supporting characters in the series. Rem, who is a mentor to Vash, is nice. Vash's twin brother, Million Knives, is very sinister and is considered the main villain of the series. But he was never mentioned, up until the second/third half of the show. And finally, legato is ok. He's not my favorite villain in an anime, but he's alright.

Art wise, Trigun looks good for an anime released 10 years ago. It doesn't look as good as some animes in 1998 like Cowboy Bebop, but it's still a good looking anime. The animation is good. It never tends to get choppy or whatever. There was one thing that bothers me of the animation. In episode 16 where Rai-Dei the Blade killed E.G. Mine, the animation went crazy when the developers made Rai-Dei bigger then the city when he first met Vash. It really did bother me and it was nothing major, since that problem never appears in the series all the time. But it does bother me to some extent. But with that aside, the animation is still good.

I also enjoyed the English voice acting in this anime. Next to other animes I've seen that had spectacular English dubs like Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing and Death Note; Trigun ranks up with the other animes I've mentioned as having the best English voice acting I've ever heard in any animes. Here are some examples of the voice actors in the anime. Vash is voiced by Johnny Young Bosch. Many people will know him as Adam the black ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Nero from Devil May Cry 4. Milly is voiced by Lia Sargent, who might know her as Judy, that female cowgirl from that Big Shot show from Cowboy Bebop and Chun-Li from Street Fighter II:V, Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie and Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. And Legato is voiced by Richard Cansino, who plays Vegas in Street Fighter II: V and Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. I can't say anything about the Japanese voice acting, since I have seen the entire series in English.

The music in this anime is really good. The opening theme is awesome, the music in the episodes are great. The entire music in the series is nice, for the exception of the ending theme. I'm not too crazed on how that song is played. I just didn't think it wasn't as good as both the opening theme and all the other ending themes I've heard in other animes.

Overall, Trigun is a great show that I think many people will enjoy watching. Because of its light-hearted tone, great story, nice voice acting and Vash's humor, it really makes the show worth watching. If you are interested in western animes and if you want to see a series that doesn't take itself into a lot of serious directions, this is the anime for you.
