I would imagine most new computers still include a 56k modem to insure compatibility. Seeing as high speed isn't availible in all areas yet. So i mean, if you use high speed then i wouldn't bother putting in a 56k modem.
You also want to make sure all your devices are getting enough power. Definitely invest in 2 good surge protectors and hook them up to different outlets. I have my LCD, PS3, and Toshiba HD-A1 hooked into one surge protector. While i have my 360, receiver, and subwoofer hooked into another.
You won't be able to get true surround sound for games unless the unit itself has an Optical input. Best thing you'll probably be able to get is just 2 channel stereo via the red/white rca plugs. Sorry man.
If its a home theatre in a box then odds are it does not have a optical plug in. A receiver is the amp, or what you plug all your speakers into. However most HTIB are just a dvd player and mediocre receiver so...
