You can just buy a completely new cable. Get your desired length, just make sure its a Cat5 cable.

Any brand new laptop shouldn't have problems running either of those programs. We just got my sister a new HP Laptop for school, the things loaded and we got it at a great price as well so definitely check into HP and also Toshiba for laptops.
