I'm looking to get some headphones to use on the go. I'm just tired of earbuds breaking. These are the twos i have found, or is there something better, in a simlar price point. I'm looking that can fit in my messenger bag and such.

Of the two the AKG will be a little better from a portability standpoint. You might also consider the Sennheiser Adidas PMX 680 or 680i, which should be good if you're not just on-the-go, but active. If you're willing to put up a few more dollars, the Audio Technica ATH-M50 fold up nicely, and are probably the best value in headphones today. You won't regret it, if you go this route, though they are a bit outside your range. Good luck, Boz

Greetings:

The original thread (http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/29012977) has been locked, but it looks like it's still a bit buggy. While I can see my inbox and updates counter on most pages, such as the front page, in forums, the News splash page, and most all the splash pages, it doesn't work on individual game pages and review pages.

For example, visit the Shank 2 game page here: http://www.gamespot.com/shank-2/reviews/shank-2-review-6350414/

This is less of an issue now that I can see if I've got updates on the home page, but I still wanted to bring it to the site admin's attention. Particularly since you were just working on it, a solution might be top of mind. Or not; like I said, it's not really a big deal for me, now.

Happy gaming,

Boz

A few things you can try:

  1. Is your computer also plugged into a television or second audio output, meaning are you using a Coaxial, Optical, or HDMI output? If so, it may be muting your regular 3.5mm out.
  2. Check regardless to make sure your default audio output is to the analog 3.5mm plug. I've had mine default back to HDMI after certain reboots.
  3. Try plugging into an alternative output. If you have a front output, try that.
  4. Check to make sure your speakers are working by plugging them into your MP3 player of choice.
  5. Have you downloaded the latest drivers for your specific audio chipset? For example, my motherboard uses a Realtek ALC888. I have the updated motherboard drivers, but also went to Realtek's site to get their drivers for audio, as well. The audio chipset manufacturer typically has more options available in its driver software than what you get stock with Windows.

Good luck,

Boz

This seems to have been resolved at some point this morning.

Thank you, Gamespot.

Honestly, that is the perfect price range for the Audio Technica ATH-M50. They're not just the best headphone in the $100 - $150 range, I'd say they're the best value in headphones, dollar for dollar. You'll find thousands of positive reviews from everyone from headphone enthusiasts on sites like Head-Fi to your average iPod monkey for good reason.

Amazon: 4.7 / 5 stars with 440 customer reviews
Head-Fi Rank: #6 of all headphones, #3 in over-ear
HeadRoom Recommended in its price range

Get them and never look back.

Headset is a razer carcharias. I really like the sound and comfort. Big pads around the ear etc.kraken2109
First, I'd reach out to Razer and see if they are covered under warranty. You might be able to get a replacement for the cost of shipping. You're outside the one-year warranty window, but sometimes calling and telling a manufacturer you love their product can get you results. If you like them and are DIY-inclined, fix them. With a soldering iron, some solder, wire strippers, and shrink tubing/electrical tape you can remove the headphone volume and solder the wiring to reconnect all the cords. If you cannot fix them, replace them. No reason to go out and buy new headphones if you have already found one you like. Boz

Sorry for bringing back an old thread, but while looking at choices given in the thread. Customer feedback referenced that an open design would yield better quality. For $50-60 open headphones are there any that still provide the atmospheric sound I'm looking for, and would it be recommended I get that instead. I'm sure I can somehow make up for any outside noise.Leafboy102
This is silly. There are $2,000 open and closed-backed headphones. They are different designs with different pros and cons, but that does not include quality. There are high quality headphones of every variety; open, closed, on-ear, and in-ear. The top five over-ear headphones at Head-Fi include three open-back and two closed-back headphones. You specified that you wanted isolation, and for that you'll want closed-back to reduce external noises from invading your listening experience. Multiple respondents have concurred with this. You can do what you want, but I'd strongly recommend closed-back considering your criteria. Good luck, Boz

My headset cable is already way too long XDkraken2109
The extension cable is just so you don't have to plug and unplug your headphones from the back of your case. Boz

Me too.kraken2109
You could just get a male to female 3.5mm extension cable. Any Radio Shack will stock them, but you can order them online, too. Run that from your rear panel output and it'll accomplish the same thing. ;) Boz
