The thing here is that folks are suggesting high-quality cards, but if the only thing that concerns you is eliminating the distortion you're getting from the motherboard audio, almost any dedicated sound card should provide you with sufficient isolation to remove noises like hard disk access and a lot of EMI, relatively speaking.

My advice is to buy from a reputable, local dealer with a good return policy - ANY Asus or Creative - and pop it in. If the noise is eliminated, mission accomplished.

If you do go the USB route, be very careful that it also supports your microphone, since you're using a headset.

Good luck!

oled tv is going to be even better than crt's judging by their specds, but thats going to be in a few years. I do have a Galaxy S2 and the amoled screen is amazing, no ghosting, and the blacks are darker than night :)SPBoss
A little trivia for you: Pioneer was the first firm to commercial market OLED technology in 1997 as displays for aftermarket car receivers. Despite only being able to reproduce grey scale in only one given color (shades of green, shades of blue, etc.), they were bright, viewable at any angle, and provided crisp images. I had one of the first off the line. At the time they had predicted that OLED technology would be the standard for televisions within 10 years, and that they'd be paper-thin, since tech demos had already achieved that goal. Mass-production has been a bit difficult, though, due to high costs. Boz

Im torn between either the ad700s or the HD598's either of which will be connected to an Astro Mixamp. I know the 598s are twice as expensive but let's pretend for a moment that they cost the same for the sake of a simpler argument. 'Im more concerned with which wouod be better overall and not so much the best bang for buck.

The AD700s are probably the most comfortable pair of headphones I've used, which is important if you have a big head (like me). They sound beautiful, but lack bass: I personally wouldn't use them for game for this reason, but there are thousands of satisfied owners. I have yet to try the 598 (tried the HD202, 555, and 595s) , but haven't worn a Sennheiser yet that I liked due to their high clamping pressure. It's always like my head is in a vice. Regardless, I'd buy them over the AD700's. I personally wouldn't buy either for gaming. For gaming I prefer a punchy bass, clear audio, and the isolation afforded by closed-back headphones (both the models you listed are open-back). Given your price range I would recommend either the Audio Technica ATH-M50 or V-Moda M-80, depending on how you want them to fit. Good luck, Boz

Two things you can try, both of which involve opening the side of your PC case:

  1. Make sure the front panel connecter is plugged directly into the sound card, not the motherboard.
  2. If it is plugged into the sound card, sometimes this is just a loose wire. Disconnect and reconnect the front-panel wire.

Good luck!

No; at that price you'll do better with the M-Audio AV30 or - if you hunt around - the AV40. NVIDIATI recommends a pair of Swan speakers, typically, but you'll have to find them, first.

Good luck,

It seems the main issue is that you were upgrading without knowing why you were upgrading. You weren't trying to improve bass, get a wider soundstage, or looking for comfort: You just wanted something "better." But headphones aren't cars. In the headphone world a Mustang isn't necessarily better than a Ford Fiesta, depending on the owner. In some cases upgrading results in worse sound. For example, hip-hop enthusiasts moving from the Audio Technica ATH-M50 (~$140) to a Sennheiser 600 might be hugely disappointed by the lack of emphasis in the low-end, and what would likely seem like overwhelmingly sharp highs by comparison. Since you're dropping quite a chunk of change, I'd consider returning the Sennheisers and doing some shopping around at local stores, if you have any available. You'll save yourself time, money, better define your goals, and get a clear understanding of the differences between the various headphones. I probably would have bought the Audio-Technica AD700's had I not tried them on first and found them tremendously lacking in low-end, yet other listeners are perfectly content. The one thing I've learned about mid- and high-end headphones is that you cannot trust reviews. You've got to take them for a test drive. I hope this is helpful, and you're able to find the right headphones for you. :) Boz

I just wanted to finally try a good headphone for the first time in my life and people at headfi recommended hd600 or 650 and i chose the 600s cause i read what ppl said about it and was convinced to get it. Also its because the 650s were $350 a month ago but are $500 now at amazon so i chose the 600s for $316. Planning on getting the E17 when it comes out, will that improve sound quality by a lot? Right now im just using the E9, i didnt wanna buy the e7.

You didn't answer my question: What was wrong with the Klipsch Image Ones? Headphones are a subjective experience. Price is not necessarily an indicator of quality, and is very much impacted by what you are listening to, where you are listening to it, you (meaning the size of your head and shape of your ears), and a variety of other factors. I've actually been meaning to update the Headphone FAQ, but I actually can't due to a persistent Gamespot bug. Happy gaming, Boz

old head phones which were Klipsch Image One that were plugged straight to my computer with no amp or anything. I am planning on getting the E17 so I'll use the E17/E9 combo, will that help a lot with the sound quality? Also I just tested the headphones with 720p/1080p music videos I downloaded off youtube and some songs with 320kbps and like I said cant tell the difference in quality. I listen to all genres btw but mostly pop, rock/metal, hip hop/rap, and R&B.

I have tried several ways to post links, but it seems to be bugged at least for me. I can't seem to post links the last few days for some reason

There is already a sticky addressing this issue. It's been a problem for over a year. Boz
