Sony will be giving publishers the right to block used games. So how they going that?

  1. require you active it online first = most likly
  2. build single code right into the disc

going be same for 720

I ask again: WHY do they need this right? They already cut single player parts and uses online passes. They could block the entire thing today if they wants to.

Actually Sony already stated they won't be doing that, which may or may not muff up Microsoft's plan.

Sony only said that the PS4 hardware would not block games. They didnt say anything about having to buy activation codes for used games in order for them to function.

[QUOTE="APiranhaAteMyVa"]I think Microsoft and Sony will approach this issue in the same way, they will let developers/publishers decide whether to implement always online or some other type of one time activation code. I don't think they will have a universal system that blocks all used games.

Why should this suddenly happen because we are switching over to next gen? Publishers could allow this now if they wanted.

Also, the always online thing could have been a false rumour, hoping that Sony would do it.

[QUOTE="Vari3ty"]

I'm not so sure. The rumors from EDGE about the PS4 were spot-on, and those same rumors say the next Xbox will need a constant internet connection. I'm hopeful this is not the case, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

MrGeezer
Even if it was true, it's not gonna be true now. It's just way too risky for the next Xbox to be the ONLY console requiring a constant internet connection. Not gonna happen. It might have been the plan. But even if it was the plan, that plan is gonna have to get scrapped since Sony isn't doing it. Microsoft may have absolutely been planning their new console to have a constant internet connection, but that doesn't matter. Even if that was the plan, they're gonna change it in the months leading up to its release. They're gonna find the time to do it, because otherwise the PS4 is gonna slaughter the next Xbox.

Like he said. Always online would be too much hassle for the consumers. If they did plan on doing this, they probably wont anymore. They will lose to much consumers over this. I would personally have to switch to Sony if they did. Even if MS did this it would probably be to rule out used games, but Sony has confirmed that used games will work on any PS4 hardware console. Activation codes for used games has probably been blown out of proportion as well. The publishers can in fact "ban" used games now if they wanted too. In Batman Arkham City they removed a little bit of the single player story line if you didn`t have a brand new copy, and didnt buy a code. It was probably just 5-10% of the game, but could have removed more, its simply up to them. Just imagine Watch Dog being released on this gen and next gen at the same time. It would just be stupid if next gen blocked it, and this gen didnt. As long as physical discs excist I hope this never becomes a problem.

[QUOTE="BuldozerX"]Thats ok, because I dont expect the multiplayer to last more than a few years anyway, unless we`re talking about games like WoW, but thats not the case. But if the required a online activation code for single player games, they would also have to keep their servers online in order to verify the code, and that would suck. I can still pick up games from the 90s, but that would be impossible if they pulled this crap back then. So whats your conclusion? You dont see this happening anytime?c_rake

No. Maybe when the entire world has reliable Internet (if that ever happens), sure. You're severely limiting the market, otherwise. And even then, I'd have to think they'd have some unlock system installed in the event everything goes to hell in such a scenario. (Valve's apparently already gone on record to say they have something like that ready should they ever close shop.) Wouldn't be good for the archival of this medium not to.

I really cant imagine how such unlock system would work...

Well, they have almost blocked the entire PC gaming community.

The last Call Of Duty game is one of the greatest selling games of all time. Multiplayer is not going anywhere.

Yeah, and I support multiplayer passes. Actully I bought a multiplayer online pass for Far Cry 3 yesterday in order to play the COOP mode with my friend online. Blocking the single player would be a whole different thing.
