TV Guide Part II - Dan Tanna!

Didn’t we all like Robert Urich?

He seemed like a likable guy. Too bad he’s gone.

I remember watching quite a few of his Vega$ episodes. They weren’t bad, not the greatest show in the world, but fun, funny and lots of action.

I loved his car and how Dan Tanna would drive right into his warehouse.......house! Mega COOL!

Of course he never would have been caught in the car they were selling on the back of this issue. 8 SPEED? But it is still a hatchback. It looks too much like my dad’s old Pinto Wagon! Now that’s a big ewww! Talk about chick magnet! Bleech!

Anyway, enjoy this issue. More and funnier issues to come! :D

Other notable shows in this issue:

Saturday Primetime

Bonaza: Out of old Channel 29 from Buffalo. It is now part of the Fox network.

Hockey: Boston Bruins VS Toronto Maple Leafs......Go Leafs Go! Emergency One: Randolf Mantooth. What a name. I remember he used to be on all my sister’s Teenbeat and TigerBeat magazine covers! Welcome Back Kotter: Sweat Hogs Rule! James at 15: I liked it. I could relate, being 18.

Thursday Primetime

Star’s On Ice: Only in Canada would such a show be made!

Bob Newhart: Gotta love the Bob!

Barney Miller: Gotta love the Barn!

The Waltons: G’night already!

Project UFO: I watched this and it was good. An early X-Files!

Mork & Mindy: Na-Noo, Na-Noo! Who is Marlene Ricci? She’s this Cinderella At The Palace, how did she get such a diamond studded plum gig like that? Can anyone tell me if she became famous? :?

BRAINTEASER DEPT: Answer to previous puzzle:

ORIGINAL RIDDLE:

What am I?

The beginning of eternity

The end of time and space The beginning of every end And the end of every place

The answer is: the letter "e" as in Eeeevil Bert. (wink to IM)

IndianaMom was in first followed by Gilmoreism and KFCgravy.

Today’s puzzle:

After teaching his class all about roman numerals (X = 10, IX=9 and so on) the teacher asked his class to draw a single continuous line and turn IX into 6. The only stipulation the teacher made was that the pen could not be lifted from the paper until the line was complete.

How is it done?
RICH HALL QUOTE OF THE DAY:

MUSQUIRT (mas’ kwert) n The runny liquid that comes out of the mustard bottle after it has been opened and put in the fridge.

TVGuides.....

So, Char2Renee was mentioning on her blog about using old and new TV Guides to improve our guides. I suddenly remembered some old TV Guides I had put away many years ago. I didn't save many, I think 8 or 9. I thought you might like to see a line up from about 28 to 30 years ago!

You can see the line up for Sunday Afternoon sounds pretty boring! As a kid I thought Sunday was lousy day for TV. At least in my neck of the woods. Nothing but religious shows, ethnic programming and political discussion shows. Yeah, that’s what kids 8-18 want to watch. Blah.

Needless to say, we usually went out and rode our bikes and went to a park in the summer. In the winter, we would play road hockey if we had enough guys, or go tobogganing, build snow forts, or ice skate. We’d all be in the house by 4 or 5pm.

You could watch, as anyone in here from the GTA and maybe western NY could confirm, Tiny Talent Time Ch. 11 at 4:30pm. That was a very funny and hokey show. Children from the viewing area would audition and come on the show to do some kind of act.

Most were little girls and boys from about 3 or 4 years old, to mid to late teens in dance troops. Or perhaps batton twirling majorettes. Many, many accordian players! It was innocent and good hearted though, now that I look back.

After that you’ll see “The Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner” which we lapped up like starving dogs! We hadn’t had our cartoon fix all day! Funny though, it was a weird version, with odd music. I don’t know if anyone else felt that.

Other notable shows:

Last of the Wild: Lorne Green’s nature show. Remember that one? Tennis: Bjorn Borg, Arthur Ashe.....wow! Wild Kingdom: Good Ol’ Marlin Perkins and his gopher Jim Fowler! Candid Camera: SMILE!

Wild World of Animals: Very sureal theme music, deep beat, African! All that and narration by William Conrad aka Jake of Jake and the Fatman! Watch the INTRO HERE! Watch the ENDING HERE!

BRAINTEASER DEPT: Answer to previous puzzle:

ORIGINAL RIDDLE: They are three errers in this puzzle - what are they?

The original answer I was looking for was:

1st mistake: They should be There.

2nd mistake: errers should be errors

3rd mistake: There are only 2 errors.

Now, TiredOldGuy and IndianaMom both got it.

But, it was both IndianaMom and KFCgravy who pointed out the unintentional grammatical error of the second sentence with a hyphen. The scholars both get extra credit.

:D

I will have to watch for that kind of stuff in the future.

Today’s puzzle:

What am I?

The beginning of eternity

The end of time and space

The beginning of every end

And the end of every place

RICH HALL WORD OF THE DAY:

LACTOMANGULATION (lak' to man gyu lay' shun) n. Manhandling the "open here" spout on a milk container so badly that one has to resort to the `illegal' side.

Christmas? Already?

An X-Mas Commercial.....Already!
It was a commercial for that “Scents Stories” thingy. I think it plays nature & music while scenting the room. Now, it wasn’t blatant, but throughout the ad, they played a Christmas carol, very faintly and then at the end they put a simple red ribbon around the machine.

Isn’t that a wee bit early? I HATE that.

”Ain’t it the truth....?"
Where is this building? I’ve never seen the Eiffel Tower from this view. It’s nice, oui?
Previous answer: The question was: Take a 9 letter word, and by removing one letter at a time, without moving them around, make another word. The starting word was: Startling

The other 8 words made are: STARTING, STARING, STRING, STING, SING, SIN, IN, I.

Gilmoreism was the only person to get it.

45 Years Ago.....

45th Anniversary of The Dick Van Dyke Show!

On this date in TV history, The Dick Van Dyke Show was born. As most of you know it is my personal favorite show, and have seen every episode about 40 or 50 times. They still make me laugh out loud.

A widely unknown fact is that it almost didn’t last beyond it’s first year! The show ran against “The Perry Como Show” that first year, and it did terribly. According to Dick Van Dyke in his interview with Larry King, it was, in fact, cancelled.

There were 2 things that saved it. First, they re-ran it over the summer and people rediscovered it! Second, Danny Thomas believed in it and fought to have it brought back to life. Thank God for him! And may he be enjoying The Dick Van Dyke Show and Make Room For Daddy in Heaven!

Drop me a line and tell me what your favorite episode is. Anyway, enjoy your day, but before you go, be sure to check out the couple of YouTube videos I dug up. One is a very funny and rarely seen blooper reel and the other is a funny promo from Nick at Nite!

Also, please go and give my The Dick Van Dyke Show Quiz a try! Let me know how you do! And have fun!

Monday....Rise and Shine!

I was updating Allan Melvin's biography the other day.

You know him as:
Rob Petrie’s army buddy Sgt. Bilko’s Cpl. Henshaw Alice’s butcher boyfriend from The Brady Bunch Archie Bunker’s buddy Barney Hefner and the voice of Magilla Gorilla.
(He has an amazing voice acting resume BTW.)

What's cool is that he's been married to his wife for 62 YEARS!
In this day and age of Hollywood marriage go-rounds, it is heart-warming to think that some people in the entertainment business were and are capable of loving someone for more than a few months!
It got me thinking. What are some of the most enduring marriages in the entertainment business?

I did some research and came up with these love birds:
Allan Melvin & wife Amalia---------------------62 years Jessie White & wife Celia----------------------55 years Hume Cronyn & Jessica Tandy----------------52 years Kirk Douglas & wife Anne----------------------52 years Wilford Brimley & wife Lynne------------------51 years Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward---------48 years Hal Linden & wife Francis----------------------48 years Jimmy Stewart & wife Gloria------------------45 years George Burns & Gracie Allen------------------38 years Aaron Spelling & wife Candy------------------38 years Mel Gibson & wife Robyn----------------------26 years Sam Sheppard & Jessica Lange--------------24 years Jamie Lee Curtis & Chris Guest--------------22 years Tom Hanks & wife Rita Wilson---------------18 years Honourable Mention: (Divorces, but they hung on for a while!) Dick Van Dyke & wife Margie----35 years Ed Asner & wife Nancy-----------29 years Robert Redford & wife Lola -----27 years If you can think of any others, let me know. I am sure there are some more.
