I'm with Ben. I like the idea of buying Australian but will not do so for the sake of it. Price and quality come into it. Californian oranges taste way better than Aussie ones right now so I'll buy them. Games almost always cost less overseas however EB Game is often with $10 of those prices so, in that instance, I'll buy local.
I'm all for supporting local industry but they have to help themselves a little too. Like the Aussie car manufacturers complaining that, without significant government assistance, the car industry will fail. Well, if you have a failing business model, try to make it viable. I don't see why the government should support something that cannot stand by itself. I understand there is economical benefit and flow on but the model still has to work. Case and point with steel. One of the flow on benefits from having a local automotive car industry is that local steel business are able to survive. So why were Holden importing steel from overseas? Oh... because it's cheaper and better for their business. So it's a bit hypocritical of them to turn around and argue that people should buy local and, if they don't, it should be taken from them via government assistance.
I feel for all those people who might lose their jobs. I really do, however I can't help but feel that the millions used to prop up a failing industry that very few Australians support could be better invested in a growth industry. Hell look at Australian developed video games.. there aren't many right? Because there's no support here everyone goes oversaes.
Anyway my point is... CA oranges FTW!
