Nick At Nite: Overplayed, and Sometimes irritating

What's the deal with Nick at Nite? Nope not trying to be Jerry Seinfeld here. I flip on the channel recently and nothing is ever on except the Nanny , Geore Lopez and Roseanne. I'm like What the H***? I mean I'm not a huge Roseanne fan but the show is sometimes enjoyable and the Nanny is okay here and there, and George Lopez show I'm not really a huge fan. But they are all so overplayed that if turn on Nick at Nite and look at their schedule they play like 5 or 6 episodes of the Nanny like every 2 days and Roseanne and George Lopez the other two days. It's so ridiculous. It reminds of me when they used play Fresh Prince non-stop, for a period of time before it came on Nick at Nite, Fresh Prince was kind of one of those dead on the water syndication shows. It basically hadn't been tapped to it's full potential. Yeah I mean sure it was still on some local syndication, but when Nick at Nite picked it up, it brought a WHOLE NEW Audience to fresh prince. Heck it kind of revived Alfonso Riberia (he was on that Fox singing show). Now that show got so overplayed Nick at Nite eliminated it from it's schedule. Same thing with Family Matters and Home Improvement. They ae so ridiculous that they overplay all the shows on their network. Could they please show some constraint? Seriously. Show a little Urkel, a little Nanny, a little Lopez, etc.....As for Fresh Prince I think they lost the syndication rights. MIX IT UP NICK AT NITE! Mix it up.

A Tribute to Honor Mr. Paul Reubens, aka Pee Wee Herman

http://www3.allaroundphilly.com/blogs/delcotimes/ryanl/uploaded_images/Pee-Wee-755784.jpg

Saw Pee Wee Herman on the Leno Show and though it wasn't the most entertaining segment it's great to see Paul Reuben and odd as well because Pee Wee's gone from a Man-Child to a old man-child. Although his age doesn't really show unless you zoom in, it's great to see the character again. Anyway, I was just thinking about what made my childhood great and I remember the late 80's and early 90's there was a little show called "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" and even as a 2 year old I had some memories of the series. After the series ended due to Paul Reubens lewd act (He was in an adult theater btw) where he was also unfairly blackballed from hollywood. Yet Mel Gibson still has a job. Anywho, In the early to mid 90's after the show ended I went to my library and checked out cassettes of this along with Timmy the Tooth. Man what an intentive show with all colorful characters and a talking couch. It was actually stimulating and entertaining children's television. Not garbage like Hannah Montana or any of that forced on Disney junk. So I want to give a honorary shout-out to Mr. Pee Wee Herman.

"If you like it so much why don't you marry it."

My thoughts on Jay Leno Show

Saw the first episode of the Leno show, and I didn't find it all that interesting. Jay Leno is a very interesting comedian but he caters toward middle america. He is not known for creating "edgy or out there humor." He's more of a conventional comedian, a straight laced comedian. People often call Leno "a big softie" compared to Letterman who is more unconventional and edgy. However watching the two shows, Leno is a much more presentable personality then Letterman, which played a factor of him getting his own show. Now for the much hyped first episode. Okay.

Leno does a few monologue jokes, some of them painful others of them were sort of funny, he doesn't allude to his new show at all. Then he does a kind of boring segment at the car wash with this comedian who sings. I kind of got bored at this point, finally Seinfeld comes and gives an interesting dialogue with Leno, although without the desk it feels more like an episode of Tavis Smiley or an episode of the Dick Cavett show (google that one up Millenials). The interview is cut short, Leno has Kanye for an interview. Kanye nearly breaks down crying, and I do feel sorry for him, playing the sympathy card but clearly he screwed up big time. Then a musical performance with Jay-Z, Kanye and the sexy Rihanna. Then headlines.

I found most of the show kind of dull and un-eventful. Leno wasn't upbeat or on his game, it seemed like one of those medicore Tonight Show episodes. When Conan got the Tonight Show he was atleast a lot more entertaining annd though viewers have fled him, however Conan created a great deal of energy in his show, Leno's show just seemed like an excercise in trying not to fall asleep. If you even constitute that as an excercise.

It was the first episode so I'll cut it slack, but I'm sure it'll get better. I like Leno, he knows "celebrities" i'm sure it'll become popular.

The Beatles revival? Is it in store

As a fan of the Beatles I'm excited that Beatles: Rock Band is coming out 9/9/2009. I'm also kind of glad that there has been much attention focused on the Beatles, I grew up to their music and I'm glad that future generations in this tween/teenage-verse will get to experience their greatness. The thing that I find interesting about the Beatles is how, nowadays they have become somewhat less culturally significant. If you see a guy like Michael Jackson, he's very culturally significant because almost everyone cites him as an influences. Even Motown music is kind of more culturally significant nowadays then the Beatles music, why? Because shows like American Idol seem to be more pop and r&b oriented and focus more on music of the Motown 60's and 70's. It's kind of sad, because the spirit of the 60's wasn't in Motown it was in the Fab-4. No knock off Motown music, I love it actually though it seems like the Beatles are being distanced nowadays from that 60's category. With rock band it's time for a generation to fall back in love with them again. Very few artists have created such a body of work in such a short period of time. Mainly from like 1962-1970. I mean Michael Jackson had 2 great albums, but he didn't mature musically as the Beatles did from their first record to "The End" on Abbey Road. I'm happy that the Beatles revival will occur soon enough. I mean we've had a Whitney and Britney revival, even if one of them doesn't have talent (AHEM lip-syncher). Anyway it's great to look back at a time when real music mattered. When the 60's mattered, and the Beatles were at the center of that 60's revolution.

Going to school: Probably on tv.com less frequently?

What's up tv.com folks, I go back to school the day after today. I'm nervous and excited, you know the type of sensation where you are anticipating something but at the same time realize you have to give up something in return. For me that return is studying my tail off. I don't mind studyin but when you have 5 classes like I do as a Junior in college it can be kind of a pain the butt. Probably won't be on tv.com as much as before but I'll probably be here like every few days or so.

Sadly I also lost two important things, my job and my girlfriend. NO!!!!! I lost my job because the company I was working for couldn't afford to keep me, due to the economy so I was let go. Also my girlfriend and I split about a week or so ago amicable terms. She wanted to do her own thing and I wanted to do something else. Two minds.

So I have an interestion question for everyone, tell me how you are gearing up for the school year and with everything else.

Summer Movie Season? Where's the substance?

This summer's movies have been pretty disappointing for the most part. Sure there are independent gems like Moon or 500 days of summer but there hasn't been a great deal of good movies from the summer blockbuster juggernaut. Last year the hype was on the Dark Knight as Heath Ledger had died the previous January and was a monumental success. Both critically and commercially. Iron Man with a standout performance from Robert Downey Jr was also a great movie during that period and so was Wall-E. Tropic Thunder and Pineapple express weren't that bad either.

However this summer we did start off on an interesting note with Star Trek but since then it's been one lame flick after another, whether it was Transformers, GI Joe, or Year One. Nothing really has been impresive or monumental. Up was probably the best movie of this summer in my opinion but since then nothing really good has come out of the theaters. Sure it's a matter of opinion, but Funny People and Bruno are both instantly forgettable comedies. Tropic Thunder had a lasting effect.

Perhaps the lack of good superhero movies this year played a pivotal role, but at the same time this year has been a big sex romp. Looking at how attractive Megan Fox is in Transformers, Olivia Wilde in Year One or Sienna Miller in GI JOE. No story, no substance. Granted they draw in viewers but what else? They aren't works of art. Most of them suck.

Fullmetal alchemist:Brotherhood as good as it gets

I just want to recommend Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood to anybody who isn't watching the show. It's basically the manga portrayal of what happened in Fullmetal Alchemist, after the first 10 or so episodes the show takes a completely different storyline then the manga and it's kind of interesting. The original series was pretty good also but Brotherhood's perspective is fresh and seems to give characters like Roy Mustang more of a role. Especially Lt. Maria Ross. She plays a "pivotal role" in the series, as I will say. Not wanting to give to much.

I thought the show was basically the same as the original series and it does start out almost identitical but when the show becomes different it's almost a sight to see. As someone said it has as intellectually stimulating as Death Note and you have characters that you really care about like in an action anime. Two winning things.

Definitely recommend it to anyone who has seen the first series or not seen it. Check it out!

NBC: What happened?

I was creating a post on the off-topic thread and I was just thinking to myself what the heck happened to NBC? I remember when the network was so dominant with the Cosby Show, Cheers, Night Court, Seinfeld, etc.....it was even dominant after Cosby finished as Seinfeld became huge, and ER became big as well, not to mention there other programs. Practically everything on NBC was about quality. I think around 1998 things seemed to change when Seinfeld ended in it's 9th season, then the next year George Clooney the biggest star of their #1 hit ER decided to leave. Talk about fortunes changing? Still NBC hung on with ER, Friends and Frasier. Things however began to get worse as ER got weaker, as well as when Frasier and Friends finally left NBC. That was around 2004. The last decent year for the network since then everything has become kind of horrid. Other then Jay Leno all of their programs have been underperforming. They thought they found hope in Heroes in 2006 but that show turned out to be a ratings hit for a season but by the time of the second season the show slid off the map. NBC doesn't have much to offer except Biggest Loser but that show wears out it's concept quite fast especially considering it's competing against better quality reality programs like Survivor, Dancing with the Stars, and American Idol. It's funny cause the quality of NBC reality programming is pretty weak in itself, which is a statement about how horrible the network is. They did Superstars of Dance, not that great at all. NBC is in need of a hit right now, anything. Who knows, Harry Potter is popular maybe they could make a series out of it, nope knowing NBC They'd probably just screw it up worse then before.

My "Jump the Shark" Moments

Alright here are some of my "Jump the Shark" moments for some television series that I have seen. If you something better then tell me.

Simpsons- The Simpsons jumped the shark probably in my opinion during the late 90's when they aired the episode with Skinner not being the real Skinner, it was a total blow to all Simpsons fans who had relished Seymour Skinner and his relationship with his mother and now he wasn't the real Skinner. It got a bit idiotic and completely changed the edge of the Simpsons since. It hasn't been the same since it's hey-day of the 90's.

Cosby Show- Addition of Cousin Pam- One of the dumbest moves I think any television program has ever done was when the Cosby Show added the character of Cousin Pam to the series. Not only did she not add anything, she didn't standout and seemed like a cheap move to bring in a new character for a show that sagging in ratings.

Heroes- Odd twist here, but I think Heroes Season 2 in itself Jumped the Shark and just killed the series. The first season was good, not great as some Heroes nerds point out, but after the final episode of the Season, the expectations died off in the Second Season as the characters were forced into boring storylines, un-interesting events, and lack of coherence as well as good acting. The show tried a CW approach with Claire's relationship, tried making the nerd scientist Mohinder bad, blah, blah.....The show hasn't recovered since that dreaded Season.

Family Matters- Urkel became to annoying. It was good in the first few years but when Urkel started inventing all these weird inventions the show went into the realm of absurdity especially when Stefan was created, you almost questioned why they needed Urkel to begin with.

American Idol- I know I put it up earlier that Paula Abdul leaving could impact the show, but in my opinion the Jump the Shark moment is Kris Allen beating Adam Lambert. Perhaps Lambert's homosexuality played a role in him not winning? Clearly though he had the better voice.

Rurouni Kenshin- Post-Shishio saga, the show never recovered after that incredible saga and seemed to rely on just a bunch of mini-arcs to try to preserve the show but at around episode 95 the show finally ended, proving how the last 30 episodes didn't stack up to the Shishio saga whatsoever.

Death Note- I love Death Note and still give it a 10/10 however after Episode 25......SPOILER BELOW......................................................................................................................

...........................................................................................................................................

when L dies, the show lost a sense of it's essence, I see what they were trying to do, by making the show continue onward into the future they would have to get rid of L however, L's replacements Near and Mellow weren't nearly as interesting as their predecessor or complex. Losing L really was a bad move on the Death Note creators, but atleast there were only 12-13 episodes after his death or so.

Well that's it for now, if you got more please list them.

American Idol: Can it be stopped Now? Who knows?

If there is one show that probably has encompassed everything this decade has been about it has to be American Idol. Granted shows like Sopranos, House, and Battlestar Galactica (which I have yet to see) are probably all better then American Idol, but in terms of ratings sensation, merchandising and the ability to draw in the nation every week on Tuesdays and Wednesday Nights to see amateur singers with varying levels of talents perform pop songs in front of an audience in Los Angeles. I also forgot the auditions but you know the story about that, bad singer, bad singer, badder singer, and Good singer, then it's pretty much a shoot. Anyways to the point (I seem to forget it here and there), Paula Abdul isn't returning for another season. Meaning that she was only in American Idol's first 8 seasons. THe controversy with Idol producers most likely has to do with money and also the arrival of Kara DioGaurdia last season. So the question remains, can American Idol hold enough steam to continue to decimate the competition, or is the show nearing it's end? Well I would have to say the latter is true for the most part, but the show itself is a phenomenon. It's the biggest reality show possibly ever, and the 2nd reality show to reach #1 on Nielsen ratings following Survivor: Australian outback. However without Paula will the show continue to be as big a juggernaut or will it begin to taper off to ABC's hit series Dancing With the Stars? or could it possibly falter to a CBS Drama? Who knows the fate of American Idol, but without Paula Abdul the quality will probably never be the same. I'm not a huge Idol Fan, but I watch it here, it has practically decimated all competition standing in it's way. Since 2005 nothing has been able to beat American Idol, does that mean times are going to change or are we going to continue talking about the success of Idol for the next 10 years or so?
