The Artists that Impacted This Decade

Alright, so I'm making a list of who I felt really impacted the decade the way it has been. Now I in now way like some/most of these artists but I felt I had to be as objective in possible in this process, and i really and I mean really tried my best being as objective as possible. Here are the Top 18 (Couldn't do Top 10) Artists who Impacted this decade.

Note: When I say impacted, I mean through all aspects, not necessarily #1 hit songs, or #1 albums, but how they influenced culture as well. So take a gander as I prepare my list!

18. Arcade Fire- Usually it's hard for an Indie-Rock band to make a splash to the mainstream, but with two great albums "Funeral" and "Neon Bible", Arcade Fire has created a great deal of interest in the Indie Rock genre and made it accessible for a legion of adoring fans, I'm looking forward to these guys for a long time. Definitely one of the best emerging bands in this decade if not the best.

17. Green Day- You hate them? Or you love them but you got to admit they have been making some important music. Though they released a few albums in this decade but probably the one that stands out is American Idiot, an album that won a ton of grammys and really brought them in the mainstream rock circle.

16. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Another rock band? Yep but these are the chili peppers dude, they followed this decade with two succesful albums By the Way and Stadium Arcadium. The latter being one of their most successful to date.

15. 50 Cent- He really made a big spill onto this decade, for songs like In Da Club, and Candy Shop. Broke through in the Rap genre and really made a pretty big impact.

14. Jay-Z- What can I say? This guy's been everywhere this decade in terms of the Rap Genre, he's been putting out #1 record after #1 record, people buy his stuff, people want to collaborate with him, and his relationship with Beyonce doesn't hurt.

13. Alicia Keys- She has really made piano based R&B into a form, with songs like karma, and the infectious "No One." Plus every album she ever recorded went straight to the top.

12. Coldplay- They may be U2 wannabes, but these soft-rock Brits have really strung a chord with people with songs such as "Clocks", and "Viva La Vida." Plus Viva La Vida was the 2nd highest selling album of 2008, their tours sell-out, they've certainly made it into the mix of one of the most popular bands in the world.

11. White Stripes- They created one of the best rock records of recent memory with their "Elephant" album, and still managed to create good other good albums including "Get Behind Me Satan" and "Icky Thump", great live band also. Plus Seven Army Nation is a Classic. Granted they never had a #1 album in the states, but their influence has created a garage band "revival."

10.Outkast- Probably the best hip hop group around, they are known for creating classic songs like "Hey Ya" but they have also churned out some really good rap records this era including Stankonia, and Speakerboxx/Love Below.

9. System of a Down- THe Band that brought back Hard Rock and Metal. They released 3 number one albums, including 2 in 2005.With songs like BYOB, Toxicity and Aerials, these guys created interest back in hard rock.

8. Beyonce Knowles- She was the most famous member of Destiny's Child, and she continues getting hits including the recent "Single Ladies" probably one of the most succesful R&B star right now.

7. U2- Say what you want about U2, but they are still are a popular band, they released 3 albums this era and they have all been incredibly successful, their tours sell-out, and they are probably the most successful band still making relevant new music.

6.Madonna- She may be old, but she's turned out a couple of hits including Music, successful world tours and not to mention she's all over the news. Even if she is aging like a muscular prune.

5. Kanye West- When people look at Kanye West they really either hate him or love him, but he has created some great records, and elevated hip hop to a new game, even if that means inflating his ego. With songs like Stronger, you have to give him credit for bringing something new to the hip hop genre.

4. Radiohead- Now they are my favorite band in the world, and they certainly brought art-house alternative to the mainstream with their masterpiece Kid A, and created other memorable records like Hail to the Thief, and In Rainbows where they allowed people to choose their price, yet with their alternative mentality they never lose their originality and still manage to get 2 #1 albums this decade. Not even REM could hold up to Radiohead in this decade. Pretty good for an art-house band.

3. Justin Timberlake- He was in a boy-band that exploded, created a successful solo-career, brought "Sexyback" and defined what it means to be an R&B superstar.

2. Eminem- Marshall Matthers/Slim Shady/Eminem he's been through it all and created some historic music as well. Probably the most prominent rapper this era, his songs have been mostly great and he brought a new era of rap, with songs like Stan, The Real Slim Shady, Loose Yourself, is it any wonder his new record was the highest selling debut this year? That's because he's Eminem.

1. Britney Spears- Say what you want about Ms. Spears, but she certainly is the artist that impacted this decade whether it be through her music, her lifestyle, her oddity, she's certainly the Michael Jackson in a decade that some good, but a-lot of bad. There is no better person to represent the decade then Britney Spears, which is unfortunate.

Now I'm subject to changes or accomdations, I'm doing this at 3:30 in the morning pretty tired, so I'll be open to any suggestions.

Career Opportunities

I originally wrote something I felt was good but uh, my computer froze and I didn't save it so forgive me. I'm retyping everything but not exactly with as great of emotion as I originally intended.

Well anyways I've noticed that everywhere people are suffering financially. Alot of people who graduated college are looking for jobs, and to almost no avail. I consider myself lucky because I'm a sophomore (well I finished the year so I'm technically a junior), so I don't need to go out to the market anytime soon. I'm going for graduate school baby!

Well then there are others like my older brother who really are losing their mind over this financial crisis. He is a smart guy, way smarter then I am (That's not saying much). Anyway he is really great at computers and technology however he decided that it would be better to instead take the artistic approach and become a director and working for tv stations doing stuff like that. Well he ran out of luck and after he graduated spent nearly all the summer looking for a job. Then finally in January he got a job, well that job lasted 2 months, because afterwards he got canned and now he's pretty much home. He quit his part-time job btw, because he thought his full-time job would last. Now he's looking for another full time job.

Oh yeah my brother's degree is in English. It's kind of sad, because I feel his career is kind of cool but now he's pretty much down in the dumps talking about himself and how it affects him. He's a bit of an egomaniac but I guess his ego has been deflated with a sharp needle. Well either way he can go back to graduate school (he's only got his Bachelors) or hope his other job comes (he'll find out in 2 months).

None the less it's not just him, it's practically everyone. Lots of people are having troubles getting jobs. I know people who have kids working their tails off in college (studying) and having trouble finding jobs. There are a bunch of kids other there, who value nothing more then a college education and now look at them none of them have jobs? It's just horrible really.

I guess me and my girlfriend are in pretty good shape for the time being or so, but it's madness all around us and all around alot of people we know who are graduating. It's just so unfair, to all these people, who worked so hard to get into college to not have jobs. Kind of depressing really.

Take A Walk Once in A While, It'll Do You Some Good

I've noticed that consumers have become so accustomed to driving everywhere, heck I know people who driver like a distance of 3 or 4 blocks just to pick up milk. Is it any wonder why Americans have gotten fat? They depend so much on driving from one place to another, they forgot what feels like to walk in the warm summer breeze. Not only that but driving short distances may help reduce co2 emissions. Who doesn't want to take a part of reducing global warming?

Now I'm not one of those talkers and not-doers, I got out of my car and I actually walked in the city recently about a few miles. May'be about 6 miles or so? A bit exhausted by it was really nice to not be in a stuffy car and experience the nice city like environment, something I think people take forgranted. I'll tell you walking in the city, despite all of it's imperfections was just great.

The warm atmosphere was really nice, I almost felt disappointed when I went home and had to drive. Definitely great experience though I'm sure my girlfriend probably would hate me if we were out on a date and she had to walk.

Music Industry Bores Me

I think the music industry is honestly starting to bore me. How is it that Hannah Montana has the #1 album in the country? A feat that great artists like the Clash or the Who never managed to accomplish. What happened to good old days when the Grunge/Alternative Revolution was going on, and Hip Hop used to mean something with the chronic, not to mention you have much more talented stars like TLC writing songs like Waterfalls. Now look at this decade? Everything's gone to shambles. What happened?

Well I guess Kurt Cobain (anniversary of his death already passed) and his suicide forever changed the Grunge World, that along with the death of Jeff Buckley, and the rise of the Spice Girls really put a damper on the way music has been shaped ever since. Though Radiohead did release "OK COMPUTER" during this period, probably the best album of the decade.

Now fast forward to today, the only people making really music are artists a decade earlier like Radiohead (my favorite band in the world), Pearl Jam, Muse, Wilco, Out Kast, White Stripes, Rage Against the Machine, etc....while some of their contempories have sold out at the same respect, ahem....Chris Cornell, Metallica and U2.

Not to mention the hip hop, which has just become a bunch of cheap garbage, I think true old school hip hop artists would probably be ashamed with the way the genre is going, and then look at pop music. Britney Spears? Come on. She shaved her head off, and has proved that she has virtually no talent, yet the media which violently destroyed her now brings her back and she suddenly becomes popular again? You've got to be kidding me.

Then you've got all these fake rockers like Fall Out Boy, basically tools to the MTV Corporation, doesn't matter not like they had much talent to begin with.

Don't forget the reality competitions, which though entertaining, try to craft individually talented singers into models for modern day American consumerism. AHEM, American Idol.

However what's most offense probably is how these un-talented Disney stars became so powerful? Miley Cyrus might be good but the way she has totally brainwashed the pretween audience and their parents into buying her records and seeing her movie, that's just insane. Then there is the Jonas Brothers, and the rest of these Disney characters who the media are overhyping, and overselling to young adolescents.

It's kind of a shame really, that there are only a few really talented artists out there. No wonder radio sales have gone down and CD sales as well. The Music industry is in shambles because talent has been silenced, I swear that I probably see more talent at a subway station then I do through most of the airwaves.

Honestly I'm waiting for that underground revolution where a new type of music really breaks through. I'm hoping it comes soon, but then again when that revolution comes it'll be over saturated and overmarketed again ruined by the media. Though I don't care, I just want something good, better yet something REAL.

Lack of Anime, Lack of attention

I've been noticing that there's really been a lack of really good anime imports in recent years. Sure there are shows like Bleach and Death Note, but for the most part anime is anything but really blows away my mind like Dragon Ball Z or something. Nothing like that has come and just made me go "That's amazing" for a while now. I heard there was a new Fullmetal series, and that seems kind of interesting, don't really have the time to watch it and the Naruto anime has gone down in the dumps since they added a ton of filler. The manga is better anyway. Well I hope anime really has a creative revolution and we see like like really mindblowing new stuff, so far I've been hooked on ironically enough, Marvel adaptions of cartoons including Spectacular Spiderman (not bad) and also Wolverine and the X-Men (Gee I wonder who the star is) they are both pretty good, but not Dragonball Z. Oh man how I long for a good anime import! Especially an action one.

ER finale

So I'm sad to report that one of my favorite shows has finally ended. The show has been on for 15 seasons, almost as long as another show that wrapped up on NBC earlier this year "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" but unlike Conan, ER isn't coming back, unless you count a spinoff idea which probably won't work. The show was a critically and commercially successful show featuring the talents of Anthony Edwards, Julianna Marguiles, Eriq La Salle, Sherry Stringfield, Noah Wyle and perhaps the most famous actor in the world George Clooney. The show was the #1 show during 3 of Clooney's 5 seasons, and after he left the show still retained it's popularity despite constant cast changes. However after many of the series regulars began to leave including Marguiles, La Salle, and Anthony Edwards, the show seemed as though it ran it's course, using Noah Wyle as the main lead. I am a huge Noah Wyle fan, and I think he did a good job handling the lead, but the show's quality began to decline especially after the death of Rocket Robert Romano aka Paul McCrane, I began to lose interest in the show, while my family constantly watched it. Now I like the new cast and I have watched parts of the seasons following Wyle's deparature and there are alot of good things, and a lot of bad things. However for Season 15 the show brought in Angela Bassett, got rid of the talented Mekhi Phiffer, and brought back up cast members from prior seasons, including Anthony Edwards, Paul McCrane, Laura Innes, Julianna Marguiles, Eric La Salle, Alex Kingston, Noah Wyle, Sherry Stringfield and George Clooney. On tonight's episode the show ends in a typical way, nothing out of the ordinary like a stabbing, a shooting in the hospital, or a contimination in the hospital. The episode itself was alright, the idea that life still goes on in County General hospital, even with the addition of Mark Greene's daughter. I kind of wish the hospital shut down or something, but that would only get so far. Whatever the case, ER has been a great show, and it's sad to see County General close its doors for good.

Wow I'm Lazy! It's already New Year

Sorry for not writting a post since New Year's, I guess I suffered a creative flow and wasn't interested in writting but I can assure you that I'm back here and alive. I have school next monay, so I have less then 6 days of staying home. I don't have a job as of now, because I was going to college, and it was hard keeping track of my studies. However I did suceed! Well then during the break, I tried to get a temporary job but nobody hired me except a local Jewel/Osco who would only hire me during school times. So I'm like, forget it because I've got school! What else? What else? Radiohead's new album is out. Check it out!

Live Earth....Not Bad but Not Great....

So I was off Saturday in the smoltering heat, and what better time to spend then watch Live Earth. I watched Live 8 in 2005 (Before I had HD) and enjoyed seeing performances from Pink Floyd, U2, Paul McCartney, The Who, Madonna, Coldplay, Elton John, Madonna, Green Day, Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews, etc... but Live Earth lacked the same type of talent and featured if anything a more pathetic lineup then it's counterparts. The only acts I was interested in were the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Roger Waters, The Police, Madonna,Duran Duran Bon Jovi and a couple of other acts. But even with this potential Live Earth, "To Bring awareness of Global Warming" only gave us hours and hous of weak music. The highlight ofcourse was the Chili Peppers set in Wembley performing, "Dani California" when they literally electrified the crowd. Other then that the performances were okay and not that interesting. The crowd never got into it and without the "Star Power" to drive the concert it really missed something special.

Goodbye Bob Barker

Bob Barker finally retired today after hosting the Price is right since 1972 which means for over 35 years Bob Barker has been on the same television program hosting the same game show. I remember watching it as a kid about 5-10 years ago on a usual basis whenever I was home or when it was on, it was always a fun sometimes hard game show that I really liked and I always remembered Bob saying, "Neuter your pets" and after a while it became a lexicon for me to see Bob every single day but after I grew up I never really had much time to watch the Price is Right and unless I was sick from school or something I rarely saw "The Price is Right."

Well today I made note to watch Bob's swan song and even though it was simplistic never really made it seem like Bob was going, it sort of was more like a regular episode as much as any other and the ending when Bob signed off for good was just great, to see a TV Legend in an era when filthy pigs like Simon Cowell are trying to ruin television into a "Best of "Competition it's great to see someone that has something that Howie Mandel or Ryan Seacrest could never have, Thanks Bob.
