@madsnakehhh: Have you played any open world game for the past decades? games more than 5 times bigger than FF7 already exist, Witcher 3, GTA5 and Fallout 4 just to name a few, and don't even get me started with Xenoblade Chronicles, no this comes down to two things, square enix are either very incompetent or are doing this to cash grab on the fans.
@Jag-T1000: Victim blaming 101, first of all its square shitnex that decided to rush the game, 99% of the fan base would be willing to wait till 2018 if it meant the quality would be intact, and second stop being such a corporate sheep, square enix is obviously doing this episodic nonsense for financial gain, it has nothing to do with pleasing fans or delivering a better game.
@fester420: If you have more control when attacking then its not turn based....anyway I suppose you are right, despite quite a bit being shown it is still rather vague, we don't really know for sure if they went full on action orientated like it would weem to be on the trailer, for all we know it could be the same system but with better camera control? but I seriously doubt that, I really do think they went full on Kingdom Hearts with this one...
@Oogazi: My kind of remake is bad for the industry? so you saying Tomb Raider Anniversary was bad for the industry? or MGS Twin Snakes? or RE1 HD? Ocarina of Time? see those games were identical to their original source material but people loved those games and new comers welcomed them because they were more modern in terms of quality.
Also there is a clear line between re-masters, re-releases, remakes and reboots, honestly I have had this conversation eons of times already, I don't feel like I need to elaborate on the terms anymore and I feel that people who can't make the distinction should just go and educate themselves before bringing up the subject, I'm not going to go through this again so instead I'll just say this:
remakes are about enhancing the original game to modern standards, its not about "moving on and trying new things", thats what the regular numerical sequels are for, remakes is about making the game better, not change it, they should have kept the mechanics turn based but improved on it, like make the menu more easily accessible or make the battles more dynamic and make it look more cinematic, allow you to move the camera around (similar to FF13), basically preserve what made the games great but add something or tweak them a bit to make it better, not scrap it all together and turn it into kingdom hearts.
and I'd also like to add that the mentality that every game must be drastically different is what IS actually bad for the industry, no you don't HAVE to change everything every single time when you can, just look at later FF titles and Sonic titles, they focused so much on changing things they never bother to take the time to improve on the flaws that inevitably come with the games they release and in effect the games turn out to be worse than their predecessors, there is yet to be an FF title that could beat the PS1 trilogy games in critical scores much less match its quality because of this practice.
at least with a remake you could have the chances to improve on whats already been introduced and make it a greater game, not AGAIN change every single thing about it.
@neowarrior793: same here, everything looks great so far except for combat, if I wanted action orientated combat I would go play DMC or God of War, I wanted something strategic, now the game lost its day 1 value for me, I hope at least they get everything else right.
@Vylsith: I played Kingdom Hearts, while I enjoyed the games (especially Kingdom Hearts 2) its a far cry to say those games involved any level of strategy, in combat all you do is button mash the square button and occasionally retreat to heal your self, having RPG elements mixed in there simply made for a very flawed game, the point of menus was to select attacks because you are at a stationary position, but since I'm no longer at a stationary position why are there still menus that I must navigate through? it just gets in the way really, KH would have been better off as an action adventure game like Ninja Gaiden or God of War where actions are assigned to dedicated buttons or inputed combos instead of having to navigate through menus during a battle every single time I want to deviated a little, for example navigating through a menu to apply a potion was kind of stupid when simply pushing the D-Pad would have been more flexible, adding a menu just made things complicated when they didn't have to, its just an unnecessary handicap and again doesn't add any strategic forethought, turn based in FF7 made perfect sense because characters and enemies are at stationary positions and because of that we needed to think a few steps ahead of the enemy to beat them, which made for an awesome strategic game play, it was like playing chess, there was the ATB gauge but all that really did was force me to think a bit faster than a game without an ATB gauge, which was great because added a bit of tensity but but not so much that it broke the game, honestly if you ask me they should have used FF13's combat as inspiration for FF7 remake because that game was much closer to FF7 than KH or FF15.
@Oogazi: Actually you are wrong about that, remakes are supposed to replace their original counter parts, its why they exist, why would I tell someone to go play MGS1 when MGS Twin Snakes is the same game but much better? why would I tell someone to go play Tomb Raider when TR Anniversary is also the same game but much better? same story for Maverick Hunter X and RE1, this FF7 isn't FF7, its basically Kingdom Hearts with FF7 skin, not saying Kingdom Hearts sucks but what I wanted was FF7, its turn based design is what made the original game so great.
I'd also like to add: if people didn't like FF7 because it was turn based then what business are they doing with the game? why do people who actually appreciated the original get to suffer? why can't people say "if you don' like turn based then FF15 is for you"? not the other way around, but whatever, square enix made their choice, they decided to follow the money trail instead of loyal fans, honestly I don't know why I'm frustrated by this, this shouldn't even have come to me as a surprise, well on a positive note I'll be saving money since I'm not gonna buy a PS4 for this game anymore.
@Cloud_X: No,Ports and Remasters are the exact same thing, calling it remaster simply is a marketing ploy to get you to think those games have been re-hauled, when really all they did was take advantage of the performance gain provided by the better hardware (enabling higher res support, 60fps, AA, etc), something thats been done on the PC since he beginning of time, its the exact same game, nothing was altered or anything, some games perhaps added a few content but essentially all they did was optimize the game, no different than porting.
Examples, The Last of Us Remaster, same exact game as PS3, just with better graphical settings.
Remakes are a different story, remakes are games that are build entirely from scratch but based on the same concept of the original that its modeled after.
Examples: MGS The Twin Snakes, completely different graphics engine, models and environment were biult completely from scratch but the base models are the same as the original game, then not only have they added better camera but also first person view and laser sightings for guns, but did they change the core game? no, sneaking mechanics is overall the same as the original but controls much better, all thanks to tech that decades ahead of PS1.
If I had to use MGS1 as an analogy for the case of FF7, I would say they turned the game from a stealth action game into an fps game, both completely different play styles, one is not "better" than the other, they are just different.
