I just reformatted my hard drive and now none of my USB ports seem to work. I checked the BIOS upon startup and made sure they were enabled. The CD that came with my motherboard won't let me install the drivers. When I select the USB drivers it gives me a Windows Notepad message saying I don't need them since Windows XP already has the drivers (my mobo is an Asus P5AD2-E Premium). I checked their website and can't find the solutions either. When I put in a thumb drive it doesn't read or install it. Same thing with my wireless mouse. I went into Device Mananger and uninstalled/reinstalled them and no help there either. Any ideas/suggestions? Have a great day!

Once again, sorry for bumping an older post, but I wanted to say thank you for everyone who helped me out. Thank you! I eventually switched out my video card and now everything (almost everything) seems to be good. A friend gave me an ATI X850 XT video card for free. I know it's not the next best thing, but it's still pretty good, I think! Hope everyone is having a great day!

ok, just to make sure does the board 'post'? Ie does the bios beep on startup and go through its startup cycle? If thats so then I would say its almost positively the video card.

Demo24

Thanks for all the help and advice, it's really appreciated. Only once has the computer booted to the BIOS screen. I thought all was good but then the screen went blank again and the light on the monitor started blinking again (I didn't hit the power button, the screen just went blank) as if it wasn't getting a signal. I took the HD (it wasn't screwed into its holder in the case) and bolted it down, not unplugging anything. It doesn't beep or anything either, just fan noise. It's a new HD so I have my Windows install disk (full version) in the drive for when/if it works. I'm at work right now, if it helps I can post the specs when I get home. I am going to try and borrow a friends PCI-Express video card tomorrow and try switching it out with mine. I'll probably post again after I do that, sometime Sunday afternoon, unless someone else offers another idea.

Once again, thank you everyone for the help you've offered. I've never really asked for help this way, and I appreciate not being flamed or ridiculed. I promise I'm not an invalid! Have a great day!

That sounds worse than my problem. All my fans are working and the mobo LED is on also. I think I'm going to try and borrow a video card from a friend and see if switching them out does anything. Of course with electronics, you know it's one little thing that is causing the whole system to be unusable. The hard part is finding that one little thing!

Nope, still no go. There has to be something loose, I mean, why would it have started that one time? I swear it's killing me, I don't like using this laptop for everything! I guess I shouldn't complain though, it could be worse.

Thank you, but that didn't work either. I tried taking the battery out too but still no go. There were two jumpers near the battery so I tried moving both and it didn't change anything. Don't know if you have any other ideas, but thank you for the help you've given so far.

Ok, so yes, the HD is spinning, I can feel it and it's producing heat, but still nothing on screen, and the light on the monitor is blinking. I still don't understand why it gave me a boot up screen once but now nothing. I noticed that when I turn it on the red HD light turns on on the front of the case, and then turns off. I don't hear the DVD spinning, my Windows install disk is in it. Anymore advice would be appreciated, thanks everyone.

Sorry for bumping an older post, but I still need help with my PC. It has taken me awhile to get back to the problem, but here is what is going on now. I opened up my case and now it will turn on regularly (crossing fingers) but now I can't get my hard drives to work. I bought a new one (it is the same type as what I had) and installed it but when I boot up I don't get anything. Everything is hooked up but the monitor doesn't even turn on. One time I got the BIOS screen (I was booting from a Windows XP CD) but then the screen went blank again. I checked all the connections and they seem pretty secure, but I am getting really frustrated!

Should I take the HD out of the case, still connected, and see if I can feel the platters spinning? Maybe the drive isn't getting powered? GRRR!

Once again thank you for your help/advice if you can give me some. Have a great day!
