I know it's so far a rumour, but to make a game of Jack the Ripper being an undead hero? That is going to bring controversy.
I mean fair enough, EA make a game set in Victorian London. Fair enough make a story of supernaturals such as demons etc. But to make Jack the Ripper as some sort of hero? No. That's where I draw the line. It's not just some gamers that will find it sick, think about Britain. EA may bring controversy not just among parents, but also politicians, possilby historians and most likely "Ripperologists" those who study "Jack the Ripper". It's not a joke, but I am only pointing out the possibility. I for one do not condone the idea. If it was a fictional character, it would not draw too much unwanted attention.
Yes as far as rumours go, Jack the Ripper was coined when the Scotland Yard had very little clues as to who killed these prostitutes. The name was there, possibly as a red herring to throw police off the scent, there could have been more than one serial killer. It still is a historical legend, a legend where the prostitutes actually were killed inhumanely and had organs removed. In the end the killer or killers were never caught, they got away with their atrocious crime.
Although I have a very dim view of prostitution, but these were helpless and vulnerable women. I don't think that many really do understand that these women hadn't the choice but to do it. They also put themselves in a vulnerable position and for what? Earning a living. Prostitution is the oldest industry since the Roman Era where it is the first ever jobs women were allowed to in a male driven period.
Now, there are still countries in this century where women were still treated far worse than dogs. Here in parts of Britain, some women are treated like slaves. How so? The illegal immigrant women smuggled into Britain under the false hope of having a better life, only to find that they were lied to, by the very people they were promised.
I've gone a little too far off the track, they main point is that serial killers should not be glorified and made heroes. It's fine if video game companies made a fictional character named "Jack the Ripper" with nothing based on the historical legend, other than name. Just tread carefully. Society's duty should give an unwelcoming view of making heroes out of society's monsters. That is solely my opinion even if I am not as open minded as some.
Again I am going off-track but, may I point out that there were other notorious serial killers in Britain too. Some currently imprisoned, serving life. Peter Sutcliffe a.k.a the Yorkshire Ripper killed not only prostitutes but other women of different profession. Myra Hindley and Ian Brady: Moors Murders. Fred and Rosemary West: 25 Cromwell Street or House of Horrors by the media. Harold Shipman. Should game companies make them like heroes too? No, it wouldn't work because all of the were caught and all of them were real, modern events. Even if EA did try, it would only insult victims.
It's alright to make a game based on historical events, but at the end of the day, it should be exercised with common sense.
