There we go, again I may slightly change this list. I won't blog about those changes though, they will just happen.
Yes man shows that Jim Carrey is really getting tiresome to me. Problem with most of his more recent films aside from Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind is that they usually rely on Jim carry's usual mannerisms and over the top acting. This film has mostly poor jokes that are either too stupid or too low brow. Occasionally there is a funny scene, most of which are not funny because of Jim Carry, but because of the awesome Rhys Darby who you may know as the band manager from the tv show flight of the conchords. He is awesome and should be in more films. Also the main love interest whose name I cant remember is very cute too. That is pretty much it, I do not recommend it.
Overall I give it a 5 out of 10.
Che is tecnically two films, both directed by Stephen Soderbergh. Each film is more than 2 hours long, so all together you have more than 4 hours to watch. Thankfully, for me at least, both films are very interesting. I knew someone who escape from Cuba during the revolution and I used to hear some of his stories, so this film especially interests me. I am going to review both films as if they are one. Both films have detailed scenes of battle, training, Fidel and Che discussing and planning the revolution etc. This can tend to drag a bit for some, but I find the whole story facinating.
I dont know how accurate the film is, from what I know of Che he seems to be a facinating person who for some reason has his face on hot topic T shirts. The image of Che at hot topic confuses me a bit though, since nobody there seems to know who he is. I highly recommend this film, the acting is solid overall, Benicio Del Toro especially it great as Che and deserves and oscar nom at least. I am not going to spoil any of the film for you, but if you are at all interested in Che and who he was, or you just want to see a facinating film about a man who's face appears at hot topic, then see this film. It's only real flaw is its length and the occasionally poorlly written dialogue, which I feel could have been a bit less with some trimming of the less interesting interactions between less developed characters. This film in a way is a sort of modern day Thin Red Line.
Overall I give it a 9 out of 10
Waltz with Bashir is beautiful, most of the time. It is an animated film/documentary about a man trying to remember his past and what he did in the war with Lebanon many years ago. He thinks he and his old friends were part of a devasting massacre that killed many palestinians. The film is very political and has a very unusual animation style. Alot of the film looks like a weird 3D version of a mix of the old Johnny quest and Sealab. Most characters have oddly robotic movements and not many small muscle movements like in a pixar film. If you can get past the odd style you will find that Waltz with Bashir is a beautiful and tragic film about a man trying both remember and forget his horrific past. For an animated film it is very violent and has some nudity, not in the usually over the top anime style way but in a more realistic way. I highly recommend this film and I hope it wins best animated feature. I found it much better and more interesting than Wall-E
Overall I give it a 9.5 out of 10
I am not a fan of Gus Van Sant, I find his films interesting but I never really enjoyed any of them. This is an exception, and I am not one to fall for hype as my review of Dark Knight shows. This film however does everything right, Sean Penn is incredible, Josh Brolin is great, James Franco is surprisingly good, heck they are all good! Some people may find the gay scenes uncomfortable, but they are done in a sensitive way that shows enough but not too much. Each character goes through changes in the film, Harvey Milk at first was pretty much a wandering hippie. Sean Penn tells the story via his character recording the story of his life in case he dies. There is pretty much nothing wrong I could see with this film, it has already become one of my favorites of the year and I highly recommend seeing it if you have any interest in the history of the gay culture in San Francisco and the politics behind those who tried to change their world.
Overall I give it a 9 out of 10.
The Wrestler is a very depressing film. It has the great ability to pound you over the head with sadness and loss, give you some vague sense of happyness or hope that something is finally going right, then it comes right back and rapes all your hopes of happyness with a long and drawn out sequence of mind numbing depression. After a while I became almost indifferent to the film. There are many instances where the film shows that the glory days will not last forever, that all heroes are regular people in the end and that we are all human.
Weakness it seems is what the film specializes in, Micky Rourke's character is shown getting beaten, regected, injected in the ass, stabbed, stappled and after a while you realize that this poor guy only finds happiness in his job. He has no family, his friends are as washed up as he is, and his love life consists of a one night stand with a very loud girl, and a pole dancer played by the lovely Marisa Tomei. Overall I would not call The Wrestler a great film, it is the kind of film that has many drawn out sequences that seemingly waste alot of time and though they dont waste time they dont usually amount to much. Mickey Rourke's performance is indeed great. I would call it the dark and depressing version of every sports cliche you have ever known. Prepare to have your dreams shattered, I hope you find the experience more interesting than I did. Wrestling fans, if there are any left, might appreciate this film. I am an old fan of wrestling when I was a kid so I found parts of the film very engaging
Overall I give it a 7.5 out of 10.
Keep in mind this will probably change...again.

2. Slumdog Millionaire
3. Waltz with Bashir
4. In Bruges
5. Gran Torino
6. Milk
7. The Boy in the striped pajamas
8. Happy Go-Lucky
9. Synecdoche New York
10. Frost/Nixon
Frost Nixon is the new Ron Howard film about the famous David Frost and Richard Nixon interviews. This film delivers exactly what it advertises, great dialogue between many great actors all focused around Nixon who is played wonderfully by Frank Langelia. Overall I prefer Anthony Hopkins version of Nixon, but they are both great in their own ways. The way the film was presented as a documentary with interviews, and a drama worked very well and from the little I know of Nixon and David Frost, there were no huge plot holes or flaws with the film I could see. Ron Howard has outdone himself, and after The Da Vinci code he needed to do something better. I recommend this film for anyone interested in Nixon or politics in general.
Overall I give it an 8.5 out of 10.
