My review of Mirrors

Mirros is a horror film starring Kiefer Sutherland. I saw this movie at a midnight showing and unfortunatly my audience was rather loud and annoying. Fortunatly though, this film has some of the best atmosphere in a horror movie I have seen for a few years. The main building Kiefer Sutherland is the night watchman for is creepy and filled with burnt statues that look oddly like dead bodies displayed for all to see. Despite many negative revews I thought this film was fantastic.

Sure they didnt do much with Kiefer Sutherland's character's backstory with his drinking problem, but thats not what the film is about. Also I am surprised that people were complaining that there wasnt any pyschological twist with him slowly going crazy. Many thought that the whole demonic forces in the mirror was a twist, no it really wasnt. It was quite clear from the intro that this film was going to be about the paranormal. The film is also very brutal and bloody, it even shows a young child getting her throat partly cut open. Though she doesnt die I read somewhere that there is a deleted scene that the director didnt include in the theater release that a kid is killed on screen. There is also a bathroom mirror scene that will stay in my mind for a while. It is quite disturbing what happens in that scene with amy smart, but I dont want to spoil it for you guys.

My only gripe with the film was that it did get a bit silly at the end when Kiefer Sutherland went all jack bauer with a gun when fighting a demonic creature. Then again one of my favorite horror films Poltergiest has a scene with an evil clown doll and a giant tree that tries to eat children so this really isnt that silly overall. Also the ending is awesome and makes up for any fault I had with the movie. Also I don't get why people were complaining about Kiefer Sutherland, I thought he was really good in the role.

Overall I give it an 8 out of 10

Ignore critics, see this movie.

The 20 best horror films of 2000-2008

1. Session 9 ( No other film this decade builds such dread and atmosphere like this one. plus it makes David Caruso tolerable to watch)

2. The Devils Backbone ( One of the saddest and most tragic horror films in years.)

3. The Orphanage (More like an emotional drama with ghosts mixed in. Very eerie and sad with some great acting)

4. Kairo ( Confusing and occasionaly disturbing but if you understand it then you will probably love it)

5. The Descent ( Though it appears to be just a very claustraphobic slasher in a cave it is really much more complex and depressing than that)

6. Shaun of the dead ( Hilarious mx of comedy for most of the film but later on it gets really serious and dark)

7. The Others ( Similar to the orphanage how it mixes emotional drama with horror, except this one has nicole kidman)

8. Severance ( A surprisingly brilliant mix of british satire and horror)

9. Shutter ( The original one from 2004, not the crappy remake, this one really is unnerving)

10. A tale of two sisters ( Very disturbing and brilliantly done korean horror film that is being remade and turned into junk)

11. American Psycho ( More funny than anything, still its a brilliant satire and a good horror film too)

12. Slither ( This film was made for horror fans by a horror fan, funny, disgusting and horrorific all at the same time)

13. Audition ( The vomit drinking scene and the leg severing scene are forever burned into my mind. A disturbingly twisted film by an interesting director)

14. Frailty ( This one came from nowhere, Bill Paxton delivers a creepy performance as an insane man hunting for demons living among humans. Very twisted)

15. 1408 ( A great twist on an old formula, John Cusack is very effective as a man looking for real ghosts. Surprisingly tragic too)

16. Bubba Ho-tep ( A genius mix of Horror, comedy and Bruce Campbell playing Elvis living in a retirement home with a black man played by ossie davis who is convinced he is JFK only dyed black to hide)

17. The Ring ( The only remake of an asian horror film that matches the original in terms of creepyness and atmosphere)

18. Diary of the dead ( A return to his low budget roots, George Romero constructs a great satire/ zombie film that is much better than his last effort Land of the dead)

19. 28 days later ( Though the plot may not be very original its the documentary like execution of it combined with great actors like Cillian Murphy and Brenden Gleeson)

20. The Mist ( Though the acting is a bit wooden and I would have liked to see someone ashide from thomas jane star in it. Overall a very effective psychological monster movie. Make sure you see it in black and white like it was meant to be seen, covers up the occasional bad looking special effect)

My review of The Strangers

I enjoyed this film, I have been following the movie for a while because I saw a movie similar to it a while ago called Them. People say it ripped off them, but they are wrong since The Strangers was written before Them. Though they are similar the one thing The Strangers does better than Them is motive, in Them there is a twist at the end that reveals the motive behind the killings. I personally thought it wasn't done well and almost ruined the movie for me. I still liked it alot, but The Strangers gives no motive or reason to why these people are doing what they do.

Sure it had alot of typical slasher jump scares, but the movie also had great atmosphere, the guy who plays dennis from its always sunny in philadelphia had a small part which was awesome to see, and the fact that we never really see the killers face's worked well. The directer based the film off a mix of experiences as a kid when a random guy knocked on his door asking for somebody who wasnt there, the next day he found out that same guy had robbed and killed people nearby. It was also loosely based on the Keddie Cabin murders which I suggest you look up.

Overall I give it an 8 out of 10

Just watched Layer Cake!

I was surprised, this was a really good film. Daniel Craig is great in it along with the rest of the cast. The story was good too, plus the ending was a surprise, good to see a less hollywoodized ending.

overall 8.5 out of 10.

What is happening to Sci Fi movies?

I don't know about you guys, but I am tired of Sci Fi movies like star wars. Mediocre plot, bad acting etc. The new star wars movies had good effects, thats pretty much it. Sci Fi may not be dieing, but in terms of quality it may as well be dead and rotting. Sure we get the occasional gem like Serenity and Sunshine, but overall the genre is getting stale. Sunshine was great until the last part when it became more of a horror/thriller movie. I didnt hate it as much as others did, I saw it as a less subtle metaphor for religion vs science and various other elements such as how isolation can drive people crazy. Sure it was done like a slasher, but it still kinda worked for me. Of course I would have preffered a more subtle and open ending like 2001 a space odyssey had, but its not the worst way to make a sci fi movie.
