Is your HDD horribly fragmented? I've never seen it myself but I've heard that if the drive your games are installed on is hugely fragmented it can cause performance issues.

This is going to sound obvious but drivers? Win 7 installs default GPU drivers which will NOT be smooth for gaming. You need to get your most recent ones from your manufacturer.

DUMPA shouldn't have a drive letter, you will not be able to expand your Win 7 partition over it until it is completely gone. It should literally be a section call un allocated disk space or something like that. From my experience the default windows partition manager never does what you want it to, I don't remember why but either way, it's best if you get a third party one.

I have heard goods things about this program: http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html?tag=mncol%3bpop&cdlPid=10982635

Let me know if it works for you.

Umm, I think you have to shrink your Vista partition? I'm not entirely sure. If you have nothing worth saving then by all means format it.

hi finally built a gaming rig and need some advice on OS, would win7 32-bit or win7 64-bit be better for me? are there any games out there that run better on 64-bit?88mphSlayer
go with x64. There are no games that NEED it, but there is really no reason at all not to get it, especially for a gaming rig. [[QUOTE="SaudiFury"]I'm thinking of upgrading my laptop Windows XP Professional to Windows 7 Professional. however, i just recently got back into the PC gaming. and i really want to play the Splinter Cell games. like the original one. it is not under the 'supported os'. i'm a noob at this sort of stuff, but will older games still play?

I still play the fallout, not fallout 3, but fallout 1 and 2 on my win 7. Not to mention Dungeon Keeper 2 and many other old games. I'm certain Splinter Cell will not be a problem.

Well, while unlikely I suggest you re-install the drivers and make 100% certain everything is hooked up completely. There is no reason for things to be stuttering. Have you installed any codec packs?

Hmm, don't take this the wrong way but are you 100% sure you inserted the correct code, did you try zeros and o's as they sometimes look alike? If you are certain then you will need to call sorry.

Long post.... alot to respond to. I'll PM you if you don't respondin a few hours.

"Im current using vista ultimate 64 bit and i want to upgrade to 7 ultimate 64 bit. Now im curious should I get the upgrade or the full install? Is there any difference?"

- I have the upgrade, I have no idea what the main difference between the two are.

"I really dont want to do a full install because i dont want to redownload all of my games but i would like windows 7 to work in peak condition when i first install it. Would it make a big difference in peformance? Also if i do get an upgrade if i want to reformat my computer do i have to install vista then upgrade to 7 everytime?!"

- Reformatting will not affect your performance unless you have viruses or other malicious software slowing your current install down. As for having to install Win Vista each time. I really don't think so. When I got Win 7 I used the Win 7 disc to format my HDD before installing Win 7. So that shoul mean that you don't need Vista to install Win 7.

"Also if my HDD dies or I ever need a new HDD would I be able to use the windows 7 upgrade disc to install it on there? Or would I need to install vista first and windows 7 again everytime?"

- Once again, as far as I know you do not.

"Lastly if i have to choose the full upgrade it will be a clean install right? What if i get a new harddrive just to install windows 7 on it because i dont want to reinstall my games would that mean id be now running two OS's instead of 1? Because id like my OS on one HDD then my games/pics/ videos on another HDD."

- Full Upgrade will, if I recall correctly, remove all your previous data. You could get a seperat HDD for win 7, you would still have your Vista Install but the computer will ask you each time while booting which of the two Install you want to go off of, whichever one is higher priority or newer?(not sure) will automatically boot in a few second if you do not choose one. I believe there is a way to disable the asking which one and just have it boot to win 7 every time.

"also is windows 7 really worth it? Is it that much faster on all fronts? including boot times? safer? faster than XP was? so on."

-Faster, well thats kind off hard to judge, however as you are going 64 bit it's certainly going to be better than XP 32. Boot times are deffinately faster than Vista, not sure about XP I haven't ran it since Vista came out. Safer? Well, User Account Control is certainly an important safety feature but most users will disable it because it is generally annoying.
