I have a hard time dealing with these topics because as a gamer I mostly play non-violent games. Yes, I have played through all above mentioned games quickly and generally only once. But I invest the majority of my time as a gamer mostly in things like Ni No Kuni, Terraria, Minecraft, FF, Journey, Sam and Max, Limbo, Portal, Civ, Tiny and Big, To the Moon, etc... (you get the point). I just really am disheartened as someone who appreciates games as an artistic experience (versus the glorification of superficial themes) that the medium is being characterized by unfair and sweeping generalizations. If these politicians and the American people want to scrutinize games than please have an understanding of what the reality of games are in the 21st century. It is not all CoD, MoH, Battlefield, GoW, etc... The huge plethora of genres and titles speak to the fact that games are like any other thing, hugely diverse and deal with a myriad spectrum of themes, ideas, and motifs. Furthermore, I am tired of the superficial title of "gamer".... Most people characterize "us" as young, testosterone-filled males.... Personally, I am almost 30 and currently a PhD student that works in China. Most people are shocked when they find out that I am a passionate gamer... We have serious identity issues that must be addressed. To me, these arguments are similar to saying that people who watch movies are all goths that only love horror and hack-n-slash flicks. Last time I checked, there are more people playing more kinds of games than in any point in our short history. Wii, Farmville, Angry Birds, etc.... Gamer is quickly becoming passe and is in desperate need of reformulation. Finally, a politician telling "gamers" to shut up is unacceptable, outright unfair and a thoughtless diatribe against a massive and diverse community, As a scientist, I can assure these people that it is seminal to do research before attempting to publicly address such a complex issue.
@darkmatt2009 @GymFox I was just thinking a bit out loud.. I know that a GTX680+i7 rig was damn expensive, but in the end totally worth it for me. I truly beleive in the end with how many games I purchase that with Steam, GOG, Greenman, Desura, Humble, etc... that I will save money in the long term. Especially since next gen are seemingly moving towards the elimantion of used games. This will keep game prices really really high in comparison.
As performance specs are released for next gen I am totally unimpressed. As above mentioned "i7 PC armed with a high-end GPU like a GTX 680 is--at least in theory--comfortably more powerful than what's rumoured to be in the new Xbox and PlayStation". On top of 32GB of 1866 DDR3 RAM these are the specs of my recently built rig... With the proliferation of multi-platform releases I see no need to purchase next gen (btw...this is coming from a console gamer of 25+ years). Furthermore, how long are consoles going to be tied down to seemingly already dated materials? Consoles really need to step their game up. I am personally waiting for the Steam box... IMHO That's really exciting

Just piss off and try to mitigate the real problems, not use games as a scape goat... This argument is so f***king 1990's... Get with it
@cowmilk99 Well, you certainly sound like a "butthurt fanboy" despite the caveat.. It is called an editorial, look it up, it's sort of what journalists are suppose to do. Tom presented a few very good points, and I can assure you is more well informed and knows more "facts" about the industry (seeing he is a professional journalist) then you do. I love people who disagree with a GS ed. immediately go to the "your a biased idiot that doesn't know what your talking about" diatribe. Please, present your credentials? Don't know about you, but I have owned every single Nintendo console (plus a huge majority of the libraries), ever.... Regardless if you agree or not Nintendo is drowning in its own mistakes, and pointing them out is not a crime against humanity (which is how you come off).... And finally, if you reread the end, this editorial is constructive criticism not a full scale lambasting.
Wonder how long PS4 users will be stuck with only ~2GB of VRAM (btw... how many cores in the GPU and if so are they cuda)?? After 25 years of console gaming I just recently made the transition into a huge rig (started with 1566 GTX680 2GB.. only before SLI up to 4GB).. Got to say from years and years of gaming, I am never looking back. All the bull**** on consoles is just too much to handle.... Most of all the prices and "deals" on PSN and XBL literally make me laugh out loud when I see them
